Christianity in Australia is multiform and reflects various streams of immigration. The first Ref Christians to arrive were Presb from Scotland and Congreg from England. Congregations were established in various parts of Australia. In the course of the 19th century they gradually organized themselves at the national level. In 1977, after protracted negotiations, Methodists, Presb, and Congreg formed theUniting Church of Australia(cf. no. 1).
While the Uniting Church of Australia participates in the ecumenical movement and is an active member of the National Council of Churches in Australia, most Presb and Ref bodies view the ecumenical movement with scepticism, some even with hostility. These hold to conservative interpretations of the Ref tradition. Alliances Churches

Perhaps the greatest question
facing the emerging church
is how to integrate spiritual tourism
with the notion of redemptive community. How do we create communities
flexible enough to weather
the constant influx of new people and ideas, yet stable enough to provide consistency for those who commit themselves to those communities? How do we create communities that are open enough to welcome the tourist, yet orthodox enough to remain grounded in the triune God?
From "Out of Bounds Church" by Steve Taylor Emergent Kiwi Read about Steve's Pentecost with flaming rock, baptism, chalk drawings, didgeridoos and many language at "Emergent Kiwi" (link above). Sourced from Jonny Baker's blog site http://jonnybaker.blogs.com/ Jonny is a UK Anglican who works with CMS and his daily blog (online journal) is a great link to many parts of the emerging/"alt" church around the world.
CHURCH - FRESH OUT OF THE BOX
Despite the fact that most people who attend our churches for worship think that their church is warm, friendly, and inviting, it is quite clear that many of our existing forms of church are unattractive to those who don't currently attend. It is also clear that one of the best strategies for attracting the attention of those who don't currently participate in church is to plant new forms of church or to develop new faith communities. Rev. Ian Littler.
What was the name of the service?
Morning worship. How full was the building? There was a congregation of 30, which included a choir of 12! Did anyone welcome you personally? Yes. I was welcomed warmly, and unexpectedly, by an acquaintance from years ago, which was a nice surprise. Was your pew comfortable? The seats were padded with upright backs, which were quite alright for an hour's service. How would you describe the pre-service atmosphere? Generally, the atmosphere was reverential and quiet. There was a little muttering behind me, but believe me, I've struck a lot worse. What were the exact opening words of the service?

Index of Reports

Mystery Worshipper: Adeodatus.
The church: West Hawthorn Uniting Church, Melbourne, Australia.
Denomination: Uniting Church of Australia.
The building: A red brick pre-World War I church. It is a typical Methodist building of the period, with a raised central pulpit and side aisles.I could hardly describe it as beautiful in an architectural sense.
The church: According to the noticeboard, the building is also used by an ethnic group. I don't know if there is much or any interaction between the two congregations.
The neighbourhood: The church is situated on a main road in a fairly affluent area, quite close to the centre of the city.
The cast: The Rev. Robert Humphreys.
What was the name of the service?
It wasn't actually stated on the noticeboard or pew sheet, but I guess Morning Worship would cover it. How full was the building? About 45 present in a space which would probably take 200. Did anyone welcome you personally? Yes, a handshake and a smile from two people as I entered. Two other people asked me where I was from. Was your pew comfortable?
