MEDIA RELEASE 1 November 1999
Rev Fred Nile appeals to members of the Uniting Church in Australia Standing Committee NSW Synod
The Rev Fred Nile MLC, Leader of the Christian Democratic Party, has written an appeal to the Uniting Church Synod: Dear Member I am writing to express my concern over the Media reports that Rev. Harry Herbert, Executive Director, Uniting Church Board of Social Responsibility, has offered to operate Australia's first controversial, legal heroin 'shooting gallery', where addicts will be assisted with equipment an shown how to inject themselves with heroin, an illegal, dangerous drug. Mr Herbert says he does not have to get the Uniting Church's authority or agreement to take this action. I believe this is a most controversial issue which cannot be left to one minister with 'soft' views on drugs. If Mr Herbert goes ahead it will give the impression that the whole of the Uniting Church its Standing Committees, Synod, Presbyteries, Clergy and Members endorse and support his actions, which are opposed by the Salvation Army and other denominations. It is for this reason the Catholic Church withdrew its support as it implied the Church endorsed drug use.

http://wa.uca.org.au/
Welcome to the website of the Uniting Church in Australia, Synod of Western Australia. Born in 1977, the Uniting Church in Australia (UCA) is this nation's only truly indigenous mainstream Christian movement. It stands with the people of this land in their search for spiritual life, justice, identity and dignity. To be 'uniting' means to follow in the steps of Jesus who sought unity, prayed for unity and died to unite God and humanity. In an Australian way, it is reflective of the love, care and grace of Christ. Throughout the country Uniting Church congregations provide caring faith communities to which all people are welcome. Each congregation aims to unite people with each other and with God. If you are not a Uniting Church member, we invite you to attend one of our services, at a congregation near you Latest News October is Mission Month
