The Uniting Church In Australia (Ncls Findings) April 9, 2002 Old church is new - church statistics show The Uniting Church in Australia is getting older. About 56 per cent of its members are now over the age of 60, and those aged 70-plus make up more than a third of the church's numbers. But statistics emerging from last year's National Church Life Survey (NCLS) of 435,000 church attenders in 19 denominations also shows that older people are the key to a Uniting Church strength, that the church does attract new people, and that about two-thirds of its members believe their congregation is ready to try something new. The Uniting Church relies quite heavily on its older members for an important part of its image - as a church which serves the wider community. "That's part of the Uniting Church's ethos and reputation, but it's also because of this church's older age profile - they [older people] are the ones doing the community service," says NCLS research team member Dr Ruth Powell. "Church attenders make a highly significant contribution to the wider community," says a team report. "The size of this volunteer workforce is huge, with thousands of people making a regular commitment of time and energy"

Future Of The Uniting Church In Australia? To The Editor, Dear Editor, THE SPIRIT IN THE SHAKING Never has the Uniting Church been so shaken. Many are reacting negatively to the decisions of the 10th Assembly on 'Ministry and Membership in the Uniting Church'. Week by week, as urgent meetings are held across the Synods attempting to find the way ahead, our church is in decline numerically and in terms of missional impact. Much energy is being expended on trying to hold the disparate elements of the denomination together. In my view, the time has come to consider the possibility that the UCA has run its course, and should now be allowed to reform into various congregational and regional entities comprising new forms of the church. Perhaps none of these emerging faith communities should retain the name 'UCA', for any group which holds to the name would in fact be markedly different to the existing denomination. Once a denomination is formed, it seems that there are extremely powerful forces that insist the, while the Spirit inspires the creation of the new, it is less likely that the Spirit inspires the shedding of what is no longer necessary. If it were possible in the years leading up to 1977 for old forms to be replaced by the new, why not now?

RESPONSE TO THE RECONCILIATION PROCESS
Support for Reconciliation:
The Covenant between the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress (UAICC) and the rest of the Uniting Church of Australia (UCA) was established in 1994 and provides a process by which reconciliation can continue to be a focus for the Uniting Church in Australia. Covenanting is an agency of the National Assembly with Peter Lewis its current National Director. Covenanting produces a variety of resources for congregations including a 'template' that can be used by congregations to make a commitment to their local Indigenous community and Congress. True reconciliation can only be based on walking alongside Indigenous people as they seek reconnection - with the land, with their economic foundation, with their culture and within families.
Covenanting.

  • What is the Fellowship for Revival?
    • Fellowship for Revival (FFR) is a body of people within the Uniting Church in Australia who subscribe to what is commonly called a "conservative evangelical" understanding of the Christian faith. The Fellowship stands for the Biblical doctrines of conversion and holiness, holds to the authority of the Holy Scriptures as the supreme rule of faith and practice and unites together in prayer for revival in obedience to the Holy Spirit. Membership is open to any and every member of the Uniting Church who accepts unreservedly the revelation of God given in the Old Testament and New Testament Scriptures, subscribes to the purposes and objectives of the Fellowship and pays the annual subscription. Persons not members of the Uniting Church may be members of the Fellowship. Top
  • The Objectives of the Fellowship
    • Basically, the Fellowship has two major focal points:
    • Uniting people in prayer for revival – personally, in the Uniting Church and in the community;
    • Bearing witness to the evangelical faith in the life and courts of the Uniting Church.
