Logo of the UCA The Uniting Church in Australia (UCA) was formed on June 22 when the Methodist Church of Australasia, Presbyterian Church of Australia and Congregational Union of Australia came together under the Basis of Union document. The third largest denomination in Australia (the Roman Catholic and the Anglican churches are larger), the UCA has 312,858 members in 2,247 congregations ( figures).
    Organisation
The UCA is governed by a series of councils: with a lay (non-ordained) majority on each. The offices of President of Assembly and Moderator of Synod (that chair these councils) are open to all members of the UCA, whether lay or ordained, male or female. The UCA is not an episcopal church, that is is has no bishops . This leadership and pastoral role in the UCA is performed by Presbytery as a body (meeting). Many members would see the role as being exercised by the 'Chairperson of Presbytery' or the 'Moderator' of the Synod who is often an

Staffing at the MCD office is changing, with Revd Dr Tim Gaden concluding his time as Research Coordinator at the end of July. This role (which will include responsibility for all Higher Degree by Research students) is being taken up by Dr Matthew Martin from 1 August.
MCD Amendment Bill (2005) before Parliament
The Bill to amend the MCD Act passed its First Reading on May 14th, and the second reading commenced on May 19th with a positive and helpful speech from the Minister for Education, the Hon Lynne Kosky (a copy can be downloaded here ). Debate was adjourned until the next sitting days, the first of which is June 14th. The Bill is 17th in a list of 24, so it may take a few sitting days to be reached, and the MCD trust that it will be passed unamended.
The Dean has written to the Minister thanking her for the excellent work of her department and of parliamentary counsel, and been in contact with the Hon Victor Perton, Shadow Minister for Education, and written to the four independent MLAs and MLCs. The member for Burwood, the Hon Bob Stensholt MLA, who holds an MCD BD(Hons) was able to spend an hour with members of the interim Council on Saturday June 4th discussing the Bill.
The MCD looks forward to the Bill being passed and proclaimed in the near future. Details of its affect on the College can be found this document

    40. The Gospel Of Luke. An Introduction For Preachers
Written by William Loader, professor of New Testament at Murdoch University and New Testament Lecturer of the Perth Theological Hall of the uniting church in australia.
    http://wwwstaff.murdoch.edu.au/~loader/Luke.htm
    The Gospel of Luke
    An introduction for preachers
William Loader The introductory statement Continuity It is already significant that Luke has penned two volumes. Why write also about the church? Clearly it also formed part of the divine action in history according to Luke. Why not write about history right up to his own day, which many see as the 9 th Identity Crisis? Continuity with Israel The change of gear from Luke 1:1-4 to Luke 1:5, from high Hellenistic rhetoric to biblical Greek narrative style, demonstrates how important biblical tradition is for Luke. In stories shot through with allusions to the great heroes of old, especially the great women of faith, Luke opens his account with scenes of devout Jewish piety. Elizabeth and Zechariah, Mary and Joseph, Anne and Simeon echo the cries of Israel for liberation. Their lives are focused on the holy temple. They are scrupulously observant of biblical law, Torah. In this womb of piety Jesus is conceived. These people are true Israel. Not just their behaviour, but also divine behaviour, angels and visions and visitations, confirms the sacredness of these scenes. Respect for tradition Continuity with the early Church The golden age in history Being saved - doing good Jesus and salvation Luke in context It is this core which Luke is presenting as the good news. That is the main thing. But he has to present it in the context of what must be happening in his world. These include doubts raised by a rising Judaism and a, perhaps stagnating, Christianity; concerns that Christianity has lost its way and betrayed its origins or Israel or both; and dangers which some of its historical associations might cause to come its way from the secular authorities.
