A History of the Denominations which form the Heritage of the The United Methodist Church in the United States The United Methodist Church (U.S.) is one of the largest Protestant denominations in the United States. Its roots go back into the eighteenth century and the work of John Wesley, a Church of England clergyman who had served briefly in Georgia in the late 1730s and who developed a pietistic study group within the Church of England that became known as Methodism. With the defeat of the British in the American War for Independence, Wesley reluctantly allowed his followers in the American colonies to establish a separate church, as they could not proceed in their good work under the Church of England. In 1784, the Baltimore Christmas Conference established the

For many years, services were held in what was called Hauns School House. The building, made of logs, had slab benches. All material and work was donated by the community. In 1888, Anderson cox and wife, Mollie, donated 1/2 acre of land for a cemetery and church. Mt. Sinai church was built and dedicated in the same year, under the leadership of the Reverand R. Owens. Again all materials and labor were donated by the congregation and community. the building was 30' x 40'. It was built of yellow pine and poplar. Supt. A.J. Newgent and Rev. Owens organized a Sunday School that had about 20 members. J.A. Yates was Choir Leader. In 1924 a piano was purchased. Ruth Pierce became pianist, a position she held until the end of 1963. In 1931, the church was moved out of the cemetery and more land purchased. Two Sunday School rooms were added. At that time W. H. Turner was pastor with a membership of 70 people.

My earliest proven ancestor is Catherine Eddleman who received a patent, in 1783, for acres of land located 20 miles northeast of present-day Lexington, KY on the South Fork of Licking River.. She apparently proven her family grew corn during 1778 on that land or lived in the county for a year. We have never found any family tradition or public records in Kentucky naming her husband. It seems likely her husband and some childern died in indian conflicts or illness during 1778 - 1790. Kentucky records of the 1790s show her husband as John Burger and her childern as John Eddleman and Daniel Eddleman. We have the deed where the four sold the Kentucky farm in December 1810 and the records where they bought land in Indiana Territory in January 1911. While many linkages are unproven, records in Alsace, PA, MD, and NC, are consistent with the working hypothesis that father of Gangolf Bairfalckh, clergyman of Steinseltz fle born about 1500 or 1520 was the ancestor of Margaret Wenner, wife of Filb Jakob Edelmann of Rott, Alsace, and that this Phillip and Margaret came to Philadelphia in 1733 with Filb's parents and sister Anna Elizabeth and her husband and her husband's parents. Church and land records are then consistent with this Filb having sons Daniel and David, that David married Catherine and they lived in PA, MD, and arrived in NC about 1765 and left for Holston River and western country in 1776. These stories are told in the pages below:

Aldine S. Kieffer (1840-1904) and Ephraim Ruebush (1883-1924) were the grandsons of Joseph Funk of Singers Glen, Va (actually, Ruebush married Funk's grandaughter). "Ruebush" has various spellings within the family, particularly, "Rheubush." However, the spelling preferred by Ephraim was "Ruebush" and that is the spelling used on the family grave stone in Dayton, VA. In 1832, Joseph Funk established the first Mennonite printing house in the United States at Singers Glen (at the time known as "Mountain Valley") and started printing a singing school manual which he entitled, Genuine Church Music (later to become Harmonia Sacra ). See Faceplates, Prefaces and Indexes . In its 25th edition and still printed today by Good Books (Intercourse, PA), Harmonia Sacra is the oldest continually used hymnal published in America. Funk was well known in the area of the Shenandoah Valley for organizing and leading singing schools . At any one time, he and his sons, Solomon and Timothy, may have had as many as a half-dozen singing schools underway at the same time. Although Joseph Funk remained a Mennonite for his enitre life (he was well respected Bishop in the Mennonite Church), Solomon and Timothy became Baptist and helped start the Baptist church which is now located at Singers Glen.

Historical Sketch As a result of these beginnings, the United Brethren in Christ Church of Zanesville was officially organized during 1855 in the Zanesville schoolhouse. William Haverstock was appointed Class Leader and Steward, with Rev. Gear as circuit preacher. The church became part of the Auglaze Conference in 1856. In 1857 a frame construction church was erected. This church was used until 1884, when the present frame and brick structure was erected. The parsonage was built at the same time. In 1891 Zanesville was placed into the Ossian Circuit with Ossian, Bethel, Prairie Grove and Liberty Chapel. In 1906 the church was placed back on the Zanesville Circuit with Bethel and Liberty Chapel. In 1923 the circuits again changed and Bethel was put on the Ossian circuit, leaving Liberty Chapel and Zanesville on the Zanesville Circuit. In 1927 Liberty Chapel petitioned the conference to become a separate station thereafter to be known as Nine-Mile United Brethren in Christ Church. United Brethren Church, 1893-1953
A few United Brethren families began holding meetings in their homes about once a month around the year 1860 in Rossville, on South "B" Street. The Ohio German Conference at Dayton organized a Union Circuit of six churches with Hamilton as one of the charges. In 1882 five sterling Christian families banded themselves together and raised the money to purchase the German Baptist Church on Canal Street (now Maple Avenue) near Eighth Street for $777.77. Rev. Kopittke was chosen as pastor. He was also superintendent of the Sunday School, which started with only ten children, but soon increased to forty scholars. In these early days the minister served two or more churches. Ladies Mission (Schwester Verein) was very active at this time, meeting in the homes. This church also had a choir. Five ministers served after Rev. Kopittke, then in 1891 with Rev. Leuchauer as minister, the attendance had increased, until a larger church was needed to house the congregation. The property on Canal Street was sold for $2,500.00, then two lots were purchased on the corner of Ninth and Sycamore Streets for $800. The church and parsonage were built for $12,000.00. Stones for the church foundation were donated by G. Kuentzley. Albert Betscher was the contractor and Fred Miller did the stone masonry work. After four years of hard labor all but $2,000.00 was paid and that was subscribed for. When this very modern church was dedicated in November of 1893, the
