In 1910 the name of the school was changed to Bonebrake Theological Seminary The seminary established its present campus location in 1923. In 1946, The Church of the United Brethren in Christ and The Evangelical Church united to form The Evangelical United Brethren Church The Evangelical School of Theology , situated in Reading, Pennsylvania, on the campus of Albright College, had served The Evangelical Church since 1905. The union of the two denominations brought about the merger of the two seminaries in 1954 into United Theological Seminary United Theological Seminary was created by combining the full body of administrative and teaching personnel, the libraries and the financial resources of the two former schools.

United Brethren Church At first no steps were taken for separate organization, but as the movement spread meetings were arranged and in 1789 a general council of the leading ministers, 15 in number, was called at Baltimore. A similar conference was held near York, Pa., in 1791. In 1800 the first regular annual conference was held at Frederick, Md., when the name United Brethren in Christ was adopted and Otterbein and Boehm were elected the first superintendents or bishops. Fifteen years later the first general conference met at Mount Pleasant, Pa., when a confession of faith and a discipline were adopted. The United Brethren have a quarterly and annual conference, with a quadrennial general conference, which is the only legislative body, composed of an equal number of clergy and laymen. The supervision of the church is in the hands of the bishops, who are elected every four years. The first steps taken by the church to establish congregations in Kansas began late in the territorial period, when a church was organized at Lecompton with 5 members by W. A. Cardwell, a missionary and the first preacher of this denomination in the town. A church was established in Osage county early in the '60s but did not prosper and was disbanded. Subsequently it was reorganized and became a strong church. In July, 1869, a church was organized at Topeka with 8 members, and within a short time a church building was erected. Great progress was made by the United Brethren in Kansas during the next twenty years, as the census of 1890 gave the number of congregations as 155; the church buildings as 47 and the membership as 5,745. In 1906 the United Brethren ranked seventh in the state with a membership of 15,998.

Switzerland County [pages 233-235] Union Chapel
There is a great deal of history connected with this church, for the reason that Union Chapel is a granddaughter of the first United Brethren Church that was organized in Switzerland County. In 1833 John G. Eckels organized the first United Brethren Church in this county which was located near the town of Bennington. It was known as the Bennington church for a number of years, then later they moved over near the little village of Aaron, and then in the course of years they moved to the present location, which is not far from Aaron. It was in the old Bennington Church community where the Chittenden family lived. It was here where Rev. Lyman S. Chittenden was born, and where he was converted and joined the church. There were three families that were prominent in the United Brethren Church, and in the Indiana Conference; viz., the Chittenden, Richardson, and Cole families, and these were early settlers in the vicinity of Bennington. There were two out of the Chittenden family that became ministers in the United Brethren Church, four out of the Richardson family, and two out of the Cole family. Union Chapel has an honorable ancestry. In later years when Union Chapel was established, we find that Rev. J.J. Goodner was a product of this church. Union Chapel built their church house in about 1868. This church is still active, and it should live on through the years to come.

about 1851-1852
Messiah United Methodist Church is a continuation of the former Mount Pleasant United Brethren in Christ Church, which stood at the site of the present-day Mount Pleasant Cemetery, located on Route 832 (Old Taneytown Road), outside Taneytown. We know of its existence in 1848 as a class meeting (a small group for spiritual accountability) with Mr. Lichtenwalter as its United Brethren class leader. The class began following a camp meeting revival on the premises of class member Henry Shriner. At the Littlestown Circuit Quarterly Conference trustees were named on April 13, 1850 to build Mount Pleasant [or Brick] Church. It is believed that the church was erected in the year 1851-52. The United Brethren in Christ denomination was organized in 1800 during the religious fervor of the Second Great Awakening. This German Pietist and Evangelical denomination considered both Philip William Otterbein (German Reformed) and Martin Boehm (Swiss Mennonite) as its founders. Pietism stressed not only the importance of religious conversion, heartfelt repentance, and Christian holiness but also devotion, prayer, personal testimonies, Bible study, religious conversation in small classes, and charity to the poor. Evangelicals loved revivals and evangelistic preaching.

UNION CHAPEL UNITED BRETHREN CHURCH Sketch by Artist Rozella Z. Hinton Written about 1958 Union Chapel United Brethren Church, north of Fort Wayne on Route 27, was built about 1858, almost 100 years ago. Present members remember hearing their parents tell of the building of the church “in a neighborly fashion,” with men of the community erecting the structure out of the plentiful timber then at hand. It is believed the church was built originally with just a few steps leading to its door, but later a long porch was added along the entire width to aid members in mounting and dismounting from the buggies. The porch was removed, however, in 1910, and the belfry put in its place. The land for the church was granted originally by HENRY BOWSER. Later, when the United Brethren Church was torn with a division within the church, his widow, MRS. MARGARET BOWSER, deeded the ground to the United Brethren Church (Old Constitution) lest the other faction of the church might claim Union Chapel. It was in January, 1927, that the church first installed electric lights, and later that year received the pulpit and pews from the Mayhew Chapel, which had been closed. The Church boasts a fine painting entitled “Come Unto Me” painted by ELLA BELLINGER, and dedicated at Christmas, 1929. Union Chapel is not a large church, but it has been well attended throughout the years, and has been a thriving country church. It is a part of the North Ohio Conference of the United Brethren in Christ Church (Constitution of 1841), and for many years was a part of the Maysville Circuit, but more recently has been part of the Hopewell Circuit, associated with the Hopewell and South Scipio Churches. The pastors who have served since about 1900 include the Revs.

The Spirit of Amistad
in The United Methodist Church By Darrell Reeck A New World Outlook Online Article
Imagine that the year is 1839. Imagine a revolt by 53 weakened, enslaved African captives being transshipped around the island of Cuba. Imagine them overpowering their well-armed captors and setting sail for Africa and freedom. If you imagine these things, you'll be recreating history. With Steven Spielberg's film Amistad , released on December 12, 1997, you can do more than imagine; you can experience a modern retelling of an exhilarating liberation story. United Methodists around the world have a vital connection with the Amistad incident. Today, in West Africa, The United Methodist Church in Sierra Leone has more than 85,000 members. This modern Sierra Leone Annual Conference has important historical links with the Amistad revolt that took place 158 years ago. United Brethren in Christ Chapel in Sierra Leone

Amistad: The Story
In 1839, the captives below decks wanted only to return to their homes in what is now Sierra Leone. After successfully overpowering the crew, they set sail for Africa. Inadvertently, however, they drifted north to Long Island Sound, where they were arrested by the US Coast Guard. There the foreign slaveholders caught up with them and demanded that the United States return the slaves to a plantation in Cuba. Almost immediately, American abolitionists intervened on behalf of the captives. These activists in the name of Christ provided housing and education and helped the captives gain widespread publicity while awaiting trial. They also arranged a defense when the government appealed the case before the United States Supreme Court. There, none other than former President John Quincy Adams argued the captives' case, pleading for their acquittal and freedom. Subsequently, the Supreme Court freed the Amistad captives in 1841.

      History of the United Church
      Contents
      Introduction
The United Church of Canada is the largest Protestant denomination in Canada. We minister to over 3 million people in 3677 congregations across the country. Ours is a rich history closely entwined with the development of Canada itself. The United Church was inaugurated on June 10, 1925 in Toronto, Ontario, when the Methodist Church, Canada, the Congregational Union of Canada, and 70 per cent of the Presbyterian Church in Canada entered into an organic union. Joining as well was the small General Council of Union Churches, centred largely in Western Canada. It was the first union of churches in the world to cross historical denominational lines and hence received international acclaim. Impetus for the union arose out of the concerns for serving the vast Canadian northwest and in the desire for better overseas mission. Each of the uniting churches, however, had a long history prior to 1925.
      The Presbyterian Stream
French Huguenots, escaping persecution following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, brought the Reformed Faith to Canada. But even in the New World their growth and development were restricted. After the ceding of Nova Scotia to England in 1713, subsequent immigration of Presbyterians from Scotland and Ireland completely overwhelmed the small French contingent. The first ministers from Scotland were Daniel Cook, David Smith, and Hugh Graham who organized the Presbytery of Truro in 1786. In 1795 this presbytery was joined by a second, the Presbytery of Pictou, which represented another faction of Scottish Presbyterianism. In 1817 these two groups, joined by a few ministers from the Established Church of Scotland were able to come together and form the Synod of the Presbyterian Church of Nova Scotia.
