Site Index Shenandoah University Libraries Evangelical United Brethren Collection The Smith Library at Shenandoah University maintains an archive of Evangelical United Brethren Church materials in its Special Collections area. These materials are of particular interest to historians of the university due to the fact that much of the endowment for the relocation of Shenandoah from Dayton to Winchester was provided through the Evangelical United Brethren Church. Evangelical United Brethren historical materials appear in the library's catalog under its own formal title, as well as under various antecedent denominations. Mt. Pleasant United Brethern in Christ Church Cemetery Formerly located at the SE Corner of SE1/4 of Sec 33 Twp 4 range 23 (SE corner of 33-4-23) Joseph Mosier and Mary E. Mosier (wife) sold one acre of their land on February 25, 1897 for $10.00 to the trustees of the church. Trustees were L. S. Proctor, M. B. Pogue, and J. Mosier. Granted to trustees and their successors in office beginning at the junction of the public roads at the SE corner of the SE1/4 of section 33 town 4 Range 23 running west 16 rods, then north 10 rods, then east 16 rods then south 10 rods to the place of the beginning. Recorded burials Bennett, Junie born 12-2-1860, died 3-1-1901 daughter of I. S. Bennett Mrs. Estes Smith who lived near there said it was believed three children and two adults were buried in that cemetery. There is no trace now of ever having been a cemetery there. From the Discipline of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, 1963 The Evangelical United Brethren Church was formed in 1946 by the merger of The Church of the United Brethren in Christ and the Evangelical Church. In 1968, the Evangelical United Brethren Church merged with the Methodist Church to form the United Methodist Church (US). We believe in the one true, holy and living God, Eternal Spirit, who is Creator, Sovereign and Preserver of all things visible and invisible. He is infinite in power, wisdom, justice, goodness and love, and rules with gracious regard for the well-being and salvation of men, to the glory of his name. We believe the one God reveals himself as the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, distinct but inseparable, eternally one in essence and power. We believe in Jesus Christ, truly God and truly man, in whom the divine and human natures are perfectly and inseparably united. They were popularly known as Dunkards, Dunkers, or Tunkers, from the German for “to dip,” referring to their method of baptizing. The Brethren evolved from the Pietist movement in Germany. The first congregation was organized there in 1708 by Alexander Mack. Persecution drove them to America where, under Peter Becker, they settled (1719) in Germantown, Pa.
