United Brethren in Christ United Brethren in Christ is the title of the church which, in the latter part of the last century, grew out of the religious awakening of Philip William Otterbein and a number of his friends. Philip William Otterbein, the leader of this movement, was a distinguished divine and missionary of the German Reformed church, who was sent by the synod of Holland, in 1752, from Dillenburg, Germany, to America. As a young man he preached with great power and learning. It was not, however, till after his settlement at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, his first charge in America, that Otterbein, after much prayer, realized that God had poured upon him the spirit of grace and power. He began to urge the necessity of a new birth and of experimental godliness. Rev. Martin Boehm, a zealous Mennonite, having himself experienced a similar change of heart, was engaged in a different field in the same work. At a "great meeting" held about 1766, in Isaac Long's barn, in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, both these ministers, with many others, were present. At the close of a very earnest sermon by Mr. Boehm, Mr. Otterbein arose and embraced the preacher, crying, "We are brethren!" These words suggested, a number of years later, the name for the new denomination which finally sprung from this meeting. For the purpose of uniting and establishing the believers in the new life a conference of the ministers was held in 1789, at Baltimore. In 1800, the societies interested in the movement united and formed the "United Brethren in Christ," with Mr. Otterbein and Mr. Boehm as bishops.

United Brethren Archives The Church of the United Brethren in Christ is the first American denomination that was not transplanted from Europe. The denomination began as a meeting between two diverse preachers at a Grosse Versammlung (great meeting) in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on Whitsunday, 1767. At this meeting Martin Boehm, a Bishop of the Mennonite Church, preached a powerful sermon that moved Philip William Otterbein, a German Reformed minister, to the point where Otterbein embraced Boehm and exclaimed " Wir Sind Bruder! " or "We Are Brethren". For the next 33 years this movement spread among the German colonists in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Finally in 1800 the first annual conference was held at Frederick, Maryland and the United Brethren movement was established as The Church of the United Brethren in Christ, electing Boehm and Otterbein as the first Bishops. The United Brethren movement also helped to spawn other pietistic German American denominations including the Evangelical Church, Churches of God and the Brethren in Christ.

General Information The Evangelical United Brethren Church came into existence in 1946 through the merger of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ and the Evangelical Church. Both denominations were products of religious revival among the German speaking populations of Pennsylvania and Maryland at the turn of the 19th century. The Church of the United Brethren in Christ arose in 1800 through the efforts of Philip Otterbein of the German Reformed Church, and Martin Boehm, a Mennonite bishop. The organization that later became the Evangelical Church was begun by Jacob Albright in 1807. His followers adopted the names Evangelical Association in 1816 and Evangelical Church in 1922. BELIEVE

Albright, Otterbein, and Boehm were close associates of Francis Asbury, the founder of American Methodism. With him, these leaders shared a commitment to the Arminian theology of grace, pietistic spirituality, and episcopal church organization. Only the language barrier prevented their followers from becoming Methodists. In 1968, the Evangelical United Brethren Church (numbering about 750,000 members in nearly 4,300 churches) finally joined with the Methodists to establish the United Methodist Church. Evangelical United Brethren
The Evangelical United Brethren Church was formed in November 1946 through the merging of the former Church of the United Brethren in Christ and the Evangelical Church. These denominations were born almost simultaneously and developed side by side through 150 years before this union. The Church of the United Brethren in Christ resulted from the efforts of Philip William Otterbein, then pastor of the Second Reformed Church in Baltimore, and Martin Boehm, a Mennonite bishop living in southern Lancaster Co., PA. Otterbein, imbued with the Reformed pietistic spirit which he inherited during his student days at Herborn, was so favorably impressed by a sermon preached by Boehm at Long's barn, near Neffsville, PA, about 1767, that he threw his arms about Boehm's neck and said, "We are brethren!" whence the name "United Brethren." For a long generation, Otterbein, Boehm, and other pastors with similar pietistic and evangelistic inclinations continued their work in their respective denominations. By 1800 the work was sufficiently distinct to warrant the calling of the first general conference, at which time Otterbein and Boehm were named bishops. The first rules and order were printed in 1815. This denomination stressed the observance of "feetwashing" during the earlier years of its history and permitted the practice of baptism by immersion, though prescribing no one form. Through differences of opinion about the constitution of the church, a small faction left the denomination in May 1885 to form the Church of the United Brethren (Old Constitution), which continued as a small denomination to the 1950s.
