Moonie Influence - Cult Control of the World
A lot of what I posted here are things I just read for the first time, and quite frankly, it's scary. Moon has a big ego and likes to brag. After all, the man claims to be God. However, when you spend a billion dollars to influence the press, you're going to influence the press. And clearly the Moonies have influenced the press. What I find disturbing is the amount of influence this cult leader has over our daily lives, especially if what he cliams is true. Moon takes credit for SDI or Star Wars and he takes credit for getting George Bush elected president. That's a hell of a lot of foreign influence over America, especially when you consider what a loser Bush turned out to be and what a waste SDI was. It was Reagan and Bush with bad ideas like SDI that quadrupled the national debt and now 1/4 of every tax dollar we pay is to service interest on this debt. If Moon is going to take the credit then he should take the blame as well.
Moonie Myths
I'm sure you've all heard this conservative myth. "We won the cold war because we invested in Star Wars and it broke the Soviet economy trying to keep up, and they collapsed." That idea is a Moonie idea and it's a rewrite of history. The credit for the reforms in the Soviet Union go to Gorbachev who realized through his own vision that they were better off with personal freedom. Reagans hard line and "Evil Empire" statements made Gorbachev's work much harder and Reagan's work, backed by the Moonies through the Washington Times could have triggered World War III. They think they're doing the world a favor, but they're not.

A Threat to Democracy, Freedom
...and Families
by Ingo Michehl, M.Ed. (C. Psychology)
To the public, the Rev. Sun Myung Moon tries to appear as a benevolent, conservative religious man. What few people know or take serious is that he and his wife claim to be the "True Parents of mankind," the "Return of Christ," that his goal is to take over the world, that living as a core member of his Unification Church is a type of modern day slavery, and that families whose loved ones have joined the church live in agony and terror, because they are hardly ever allowed to see their loved ones and because they are often threatened that all contact will be cut off if they speak negatively about the church!!! In October, 1986, I was deceptively recruited by CARP, student branch of the UC. As most former members, who were finally able to free themselves from the manipulative influence of the group, I now am convinced that it is a dangerous, destructive cult. I was a dedicated core member of CARP from 1986 to 93. I initially was invited to a cup of tea at an "international student club" by two Japanese "students" in San Francisco. A cup of tea that was to cost me 6 1/2 years of my youth, and my family a mountain of emotional and financial resources. -
Through lucky circumstances I was able to snap out of the mindset and leave ...after 6 1/2 years, and after having illegally raised over $600,000 for the group.

THE MOONIES
By Harry V. Martin and David Caul
The buses would come in at night, filled with young people. Their destination was the Moonie facility Upvalley. Were these people "volunteers" or held against their will? According to neighbors in the area, a few males would knock on their door late at night and ask how they could "escape" from the area. Under most circumstances, the young people who live there walk outside the compounds with another person, they are seldom alone. In the mid-70s, then Napa Sheriff Earl Randol had some major clashes with the Moonies in an attempt to gain the "release" of one young man. The Aetna Springs facility of the Moonies receives a $406,836 local tax exemption on their property, because they qualify as a religious organization. You won't find a sign saying "Moonies", the facility is registered as the New Education Development Systems, Inc., of 1600 Aetna Springs Road, in Pope Valley. There are six parcels of land owned by the New Education Development Systems, Inc. equalling 672.47 acres, which they pay only $5507.52 tax annually. At one point in 1977, the Board of Equalization denied any tax break for the New Educational Development Systems, Inc. The Moonies first came to prominence in Napa County in October 1976 when Charles Lotz arrived here from Arizona with his two attorneys, Wayne Howard and Michael Trauscht. Lotz suspected that his son, Steven, was living as a Moonie on the Aetna Springs Resort. With Napa Attorney John Dower, the group appeared before Superior Court Judge Thomas Kongsgaard for the purpose of having Lotz appointed temporary conservator of his son, this essentially gave him the legal right to forcibly control the actions of his son who is declared temporarily incompetent.

This is heavenly love. Therefore, if we look through the eyes of love, everything has value. In a small thing the value is condensed, and in a big thing it is enlarged. God wanted to create such an ideal world of love. S.M.M.

History:
The Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity was organized in 1954 in Seoul, South Korea by Rev. Sun Myung Moon ["One who has clarified the Truth"]. Some sources say the organization started in Pusan, not Seoul. Its followers are often called Moonies by persons outside of the Association. However, this term is considered derogatory by its members, who refer to themselves as Unificationists Rev. Moon was born in what is now North Korea in 1920 and was raised in the Presbyterian Church. He is a Professional Engineer by training. When he was 15 years old, at Easter, Jesus Christ appeared to him in a vision, charging him with the responsibility of completing the work in the world that Jesus had started. During his adult life he has had trouble with legal authorities, having been arrested for practicing capitalism (a crime in North Korea), charged (but not convicted) in South Korea of other activities, and convicted of tax evasion in the United States. The Presbyterian Church of Korea, in 1948, felt that his views were incompatible with traditional Christianity; they excommunicated him. In 1957, Rev. Moon published

Unification Church*
Christian or Cult?
The official title of the Unification Church is The Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity. It was officially founded in 1954 by Sun Myung Moon (which has led to the referring of his followers as "Moonies") and moved to America in 1959, where he established his international headquarters. Born in Korea in 1920, Moon claims that in 1936, when he was 16, Jesus Christ appeared to him on Easter morning on a mountainside in Northwestern Korea and told him that God had chosen him for the mission of establishing the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth, a mission that Christ had only begun. Christ supposedly told Moon that he would be "the completer of man's salvation by being the Second Coming of Christ" ( Sun Myung Moon and The Unification Church , James Bjornstad, p. 9). After World War II, Moon returned to Pyongyang, the capital of communist North Korea, where he set up his first church (1945).
Divine Principle as the authoritative work of the Unification Church. (The Korean Version: "Wolli Haesol" or "Explanation of the Principle" was published on August 15th, 1957.)

What is the truth behind Parents Day?
Church articles show significant ties to holiday
The Mesa Tribune/August 9, 1998
By Dan Nowicki
Could a seemingly innocuous new national holiday for parents somehow be linked to the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, the controversial leader of the Unification Church? National Parents Day ostensibly honors all mothers and fathers, but Unification Church literature indicates the holiday may hold religious significance for its members, who consider Moon and his wife to be the "True Parents" of humanity and refer to them as "Father" and "Mother". "I think that Parents Day, in the minds of the members of the Unification Church, is a rather cryptic allusion to 'True Parents,' " said Rick Ross, a Phoenix-based cult expert and consultant and a vocal critic of Moon. "A day that honors the 'True Parents' of this world, and that would be Reverend Moon and Mrs. Moon because they are the 'True Parents'. National Parents Day, the fourth Sunday in July, was created by Congress and President Clinton in 1994. It still is not widely observed by most Americans. State Rep. Mark Anderson, R-Mesa, a long-time follower of Moon, has been the local Parents Day coordinator since the holiday's July 1995 debut in Arizona.

  • Name: The Unification Church; official name: Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity. The group has also been known as "The Moonies." While Unification Church members initially embraced the name "Moonie," in recent years they have come to view this term as pejorative.
  • Founder: Reverend Sun Myung Moon (meaning "someone who has clarified the Truth, or Shining Sun and Moon), who changed his name from Young Myung Moon.
  • Date of Birth: January 6, 1920
  • Birth Place: Kwangju Sangsa Ri, North Korea
  • Year Founded: 1954 in Pusan, South Korea
  • Sacred or Revered Texts: The Divine Principle is the sacred text for the Unification Church. However, this book is not seen to contain the entirety of truth. Thus, Reverend Moon's speeches are also considered authoritative. To a lesser extent the Bible is considered sacred as well. That is, when viewed within the framework of Unification interpretation, the Bible has a special place in the Church.
  • Cult or Sect: Negative sentiments are typically implied when the concepts "cult" and "sect" are employed in popular discourse. Since the Religious Movements Homepage seeks to promote religious tolerance and appreciation of the positive benefits of pluralism and religious diversity in human cultures, we encourage the use of alternative concepts that do not carry implicit negative stereotypes.
