Transcendental Meditation extends lifespan
American Journal of Cardiology to publish study on May 2
The American Journal of Cardiology reports in its May 2, 2005, issue that the Transcendental Meditation technique, a non-drug stress-reduction method, reduces death rates by 23% and extends lifespan. The first-of-its-kind, long-term, randomized trial evaluated 202 men and women, average age 71, who had mildly elevated blood pressure. Subjects in the study participated in the Transcendental Meditation program; behavioral techniques, such as mindfulness or progressive muscle relaxation; or health education. The study tracked subjects for up to 18 years. Vital statistics were obtained from the National Death Index. The study found that compared to combined controls, the TM group showed:
  • 23% reduction in the rate of death from all causes
  • 30% reduction in the rate of death from cardiovascular disease
  • 49% reduction in the rate of death from cancer
Transcendental Meditation Reduces Risk Factors in Heart Disease "Research has found the Transcendental Meditation program reduces risk factors in heart disease and other chronic disorders, such as high blood pressure, smoking, psychological stress, stress hormones, harmful cholesterol, and atherosclerosis," said Robert Schneider, M.D., FACC, principal author of the study and director of the Center of Natural Medicine and Prevention.

And researchers were meditating on Rhode Island as a possible model for an ideal society. It was part of a study on the effects of Transcendental Meditation on society. The theory was (and still is) that when enough people practice Transcendental Meditation in a community, their enlightenment will have a positive effect on the quality of life affecting the community as a whole. It is kind of like the harmonic convergence only with a specific meditation tool. And, they picked Rhode Island as their model test community. The Transcendental Meditation (known affectionately as TM) is a method of stress relief and consciousness expansion introduced to the western world by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the 1960s. The Beatles, Donovan, The Beach Boys, Mia Farrell and other celebrities became followers of the Maharishi travelling to India to spend time at his Ashram. They brought back a way of experiencing altered mental states without drugs. It took off in the United States and Europe at nothing short of the speed of thought. Millions of impressionable baby boomers (your humble author included) were initiated in Transcendental Meditation and became "TMers". POSTED: 1:58 pm EDT April 7, 2004 UPDATED: 5:29 pm EDT April 7, 2004 NEW YORK High blood pressure is a silent killer and African-Americans are at especially high risk. Diet and exercise can help. But a new study says one type of meditation can lower blood pressure in black teens and hopefully keep them from developing hypertension as adults. Jivan Hall has been practicing transcendental meditation and he's never suffered high blood pressure. "People are always amazed that when I get a medical checkup that everything is completely healthy, normal," said Hall. That doesn't prove meditation has kept Hall healthy. But a new study in the American Journal of Hypertension says black teens can lower their blood pressure with only two 15-minute sessions of transcendental meditation each day. "There's some evidence to suggest that it is affecting the blood vessel tone itself and it probably is," said Gary Kaplan, a neurophysiologist. "It seems also to be affecting the heart rate and the amount of oxygen we're taking in and breathing out."
