Transcendental meditation may be one way to keep the heart healthy, say researchers who have discovered how it keeps blood pressure low. And for people whose hearts are already suffering from disease, the way to prevent further complications is to remain optimistic. The studies support evidence suggesting that stressed people and those prone to mood swings are at greater risk of heart disease. Scientists at the Medical College of Georgia discovered why people who practise transcendental meditation daily had significantly lower blood pressure than those who did not. The practice keeps blood vessels open, thus lowering the pressure - and high blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease. Established link Dr Vernon Barnes, who led the study, said: "For years we've known that long-term practitioners of transcendental meditation generally have lower blood pressure than others the same age.

Transcendental Meditation
by Fr. Alexey Young When it was introduced into this country in the revolutionary decade of the 60s, Transcendental Meditation, or TM, was billed as a technique for personal development and expanding consciousness. Although the very word "meditation" was all but foreign to the American vocabulary, a glance at the popular paperback presentation, The TM Book: How to Enjoy the Rest of Your Life , prefaced by a favorable comment by Joe Namair, convinced many an American Joe to give TM a try. The book says it's easy, effective and, best of all, fun. Advocates of TM claim it reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, decreases insomnia, relieves asthma. They say it energizes a person to use a vastly wider range of mental powers, and therefore become more creative, as well as happier: "...every step is effortless, natural, spontaneous....And relationships are enhanced and warmed.... We become understanding, patient, tendertruly loving... ''What's more, TM involves minimal time commitmenta mere twenty minutes twice a dayand no change in lifestyle. It can be, indeed is meant to be integrated into one's daily life. One does not even have to believe in TM for it to "work". Little wonder that by the mid-70s over half a million Americans had learnt TM: it was being taught in schools, in the Armed Forces, in drug rehabilitation programs. It seemed to be a miracle panacea.

When you first learn to meditation, be it using mantra, breath, body awareness, or other techniques, your goal should be to reach, and move beyond the realm of thought. This is what Maharishi Mahesh Yogi refers to as transcendence. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, gives a nice analogy along the lines of how our mind can be likened to the ocean. Our thoughts arise from the ocean floor, but we are not aware of them until they reach the surface mind, amongst all our busy mind chatter. By using a mantra, we have a tool that when concentrated on, will take us over time to its origin, the earliest stage of thought.

system of meditation by which a person can achieve or reach a fourth state of consciousness, or the transcendental consciousness. Transcendental meditation, or TM as it is often referred to, gained a widespread following in the 1960s and 1970s in the United States and western European countries although it his a very ancient background.
The technique employed in TM is cited in the Vedas sacred writings going back as far as 1000 BC. Over the centuries it has been transmitted by such men as the 8th century Hindu philosopher
Shankara and the 20th century sage Guru Dev (meaning Divine Teacher) who taught Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Maharishi, graduating in 1942 in physics from Allahabad University, spent two years in a Himalayan retreat and then begun teaching TM about 1955 in India. Since he has traveled throughout the East and West promoting his "World Plan" for the training of teachers to spread TM and the Science of Creative Intelligence which seeks to integrate all knowledge.
In technique TM differs from other systems of meditation involving neither concentration nor contemplation. Maharisi claims it can only be learned through the personal instruction of a qualified teacher. A student is given a personal

Neurophysiological Order in the REM Sleep of Participants of the Transcendental Meditation
and TM-Sidhi Program JAN M.R. MEIRSMAN
Lelystad, The Netherlands Previous research has revealed that, in the course of ontogenesis, the randomly occurring, isolated, low frequency Rapid Eye Movements (REMs) of the undiffer-entiated sleep of the premature are gradually ordered in groups of high-frequency REMs, characteristic of mature REM sleep (Petre-Quadens, 1967; 1969; 1978; Petre-Quadens & De Lee, 1974; Petre-Quadens, De Lee & Remy, 1971). This obser-vation has led to the hypothesis that there exist two functionally different types of REMs in REM sleep: the high frequency (HF) REMs with an interval of less than one second, reflecting the "maturity" or "order" of brain functioning; and the low frequency (LF) REMs with an interval of more than one second, reflecting "random noise" in the brain. Subsequent research has supported this hypothesis. TM and TM-Sidhi techniques, when practised 20–40 minutes twice a day, result in improved scores on tests of cognitive and affective functioning. Improve-ments took place regardless of the age of the subjects, even on variables like "fluid intelligence" and "field independence," which normally do not improve after the age of 17 (Aron, Orme-Johnson & Brubaker, 1981; Dillbeck, Assimakis, Raimondi, Orme-Johnson & Rowe, 1986). Methods Subjects Six male TM-Sidhi practitioners, aged between 31 and 39, with different educa-tional backgrounds, served as experimental subjects (Table 1). They had been prac-tising TM for an average period of 139 months (range, 94–199 months), and the advanced TM-Sidhi program for an average period of 87 months (range, 76–96 months). All but the youngest were teachers of the TM technique. The author was one of the experimental subjects. The experimental group was part of a group of 230 male TM-Sidhi practitioners, predominantly Europeans, who resided at the TM academy in Vlodrop (Limburg, The Netherlands). There, they worked full-time and, in addition, practised an extensive TM-Sidhi program collectively. Four of the six experimental subjects reported clear experiences of the TM-Sidhis and of "witness-ing" their night’s sleep, and two reported less clear experiences (Table 1).

A study published in the March issue of the journal Stroke shows that TM decreased the thickness of blood vessel walls, a known risk factor for stroke and heart disease. "We were expecting to see some effect, but we were surprised to see such a large effect," author Amparo Castillo-Richmond, MD, tells WebMD. Castillo-Richmond is an assistant professor at the College of Maharishi Vedic Medicine in Fairfield, Iowa. The investigators studied 60 black men and women with high blood pressure. Each participant was randomly assigned either to a transcendental meditation group or to a health education program on improving risk factors for heart disease, such as lowering cholesterol through diet. The TM group meditated for 20 minutes twice a day, while the health education group spent a similar amount of time in "home practice," consisting of the leisure activity of their choice. Both groups were led by certified instructors from the black community, and the teaching materials were targeted to black people. The participants were followed for six to nine months.

Research on Transcendental Meditation at the Swedish Air force
Sensitive test for selection of pilots indicates
profound effects on mental health
Summary
Swedish Air force pilots were examined with a test for selecting combat pilots in order to investigate the effects of Transcendental Meditation (TM). This test indicates Stress tolerance. They all underwent, without a single exception, improvements in one year that the best available psychotherapies can achieve only after about 20 times longer time or more - and only so in the best case. The result also indicates that TM can improve performance significantly under psychologically highly demanding conditions. Also, it indicates that TM can considerably improve stress tolerance in stress-prone people as DMT-Neuman measures a key factor in stress proneness. Differently from common stress treatment and prevention methods, TM apparently affects the fundamental causes of stress sensitivity.
Background
A great problem in combat pilot training all over the world has been that psychological tests have not been able to reveal the deeply seated disturbances that make persons unable to keep the head cool in highly stressful situations. In Sweden, a major part (up to 80%) of the pilot trainees failed year after year. With few exceptions, the reason was psychological inaptitude revealed under demanding flight situations. The situation has been similar in other air forces, which meant great economic losses considering the high costs of pilot training.

Among present attempts to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western philosophies are those of Hare Krishna and Transcendental Meditation. Transcendental Meditation, or TM as it is commonly called, in particular has received widespread publicity recently in America. It has gained sufficient attention to arouse the curiosity of many. Men who previously knew nothing of the mystical practices of the East now search for materials on TM.
The Nature of Transcendental Meditation
A surface definition of Transcendental Meditation pictures it as a natural practice of relaxation for two 20-minute periods each day. During the process one repeats a word, known as a mantra , in such a way that its rhythmic repetition aids the relaxation effort. The promoters of TM present it as a "scientific" practice based on biological and psychological laws. They repeatedly declare that it is a nonreligious activity in which men of all faiths may participate with great benefit. After initiation and careful instruction in TM, for which one pays a fee, faithful use of the technique reportedly produces near-miraculous results in all areas of life physical, psychological, social, and spiritual. Advocates of TM present what purports to be research data, and numerous testimonials from politicians, educators, sports and theatrical celebrities, as well as religious leaders, to support their claims.
