The effects of stress in the workplace are devastating, both physically and financially. According to the National Institutes of Health, 80-90% of all illnesses are caused by stress, either directly or indirectly. Clearly, something more than stress balls, stress tabs, morale boosters and even health clubs is needed. In this study described below, the Transcendental Meditation technique was found to be more than twice as effective at reducing stress than any other form of relaxation or stress reduction.

Reduced Stress and Anxiety
A statistical meta-analysis conducted at Stanford University of all available studies-146 independent outcomes-indicated that the effect of the Transcendental Meditation program on reducing anxiety as a character trait was much greater than that of all other meditation and relaxation techniques, including muscle relaxation. This analysis also showed that the positive Transcendental Meditation result could not be attributed to subject expectation, experimenter bias, or quality of research design.

Research conducted around the world documents that the program is effective for all cultural and ethnic groups. All age groups benefit, from increased alertness in infants of meditating parents to increased health, happiness, and longevity in meditating elderly. People spanning the full range of socioeconomic levels and intellectual abilities benefit, again indicating the universality of Maharishi's program. The following briefly summarizes the overall research findings by category: physiological, psychological, sociological, and ecological.
Physiological Benefits
The original landmark research on the physiological correlates of Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation technique was published in Science, American Journal of Physiology, and Scientific American in 1970-1972 (papers 1, 3, 4). This research found that the Transcendental Meditation technique produces a physiological state of restful alertness. During the technique the physiology becomes deeply rested, as indicated by significant reductions in respiration, minute ventilation, tidal volume, and blood lactate, and significant increases in basal skin resistance (an index of relaxation). At the same time the physiology is alert rather than asleep, as indicated by an increased abundance of alpha waves in the EEG. These findings led researcher Dr. Keith Wallace to conclude that restful alertness is a fourth major state of consciousness, termed transcendental consciousness, that is physiologically distinct from ordinary waking, dreaming, and deep sleep (paper 2).

Scientific Research on Maharishi's Vedic Approach to Health: Part I
Introduction and overview of research - JANUARY 1998 Transcendental Meditation was founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in 1957, and was first taught in Great Britain in 1960. Over four million people around the world have learned Transcendental Meditation (160,000 in Britain), and the first published research on this technique appeared in 1970. In 1980 Maharishi introduced Maharishi Ayur-Veda, a thorough and comprehensive revival of the world's most ancient system of health care. Maharishi's Vedic Approach to Health is the name given to the integrated system of health care that includes both Transcendental Meditation and Maharishi Ayur-Veda, as parts of a spectrum of approaches to improving health and well-being. This pamphlet summarizes results of scientific research on Transcendental Meditation, with special emphasis on the area of health.
