62. Om Mani Padme Hum: The Meaning Of The Mantra In Tibetan Buddhism
In tibetan buddhism the most common prayer, found everywhere, is Om Mani Padma Hum, the mantra of Chenrezi, the Buddha of compassion.

The Meaning of the Mantra
in Tibetan Buddhism overview mantra meaning facets ... Tibetan Pages Overview Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying the mantra (prayer), Om Mani Padme Hum , out loud or silently to oneself, invokes the powerful benevolent attention and blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion. Viewing the written form of the mantra is said to have the same effect it is often carved into stones, like the one pictured above, and placed where people can see them. Spinning the written form of the mantra around in a Mani wheel (or prayer wheel) is also believed to give the same benefit as saying the mantra, and Mani wheels, small hand wheels and large wheels with millions of copies of the mantra inside, are found everywhere in the lands influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. The Prayer Wheel: Spiritual Technology from Tibet It is said that all the teachings of the Buddha are contained in this mantra: Om Mani Padme Hum can not really be translated into a simple phrase or sentence. It is appropriate, though, to say a little about the mantra, so that people who want to use it in their meditation practice will have some sense of what they are doing, and people who are just curious will understand a little better what the mantra is and why it is so important to Tibetan Buddhists. We begin in the next section with some information about the mantra itself.

TIBETAN ESOTERIC BUDDHISM
Li Jicheng*
Editor's note:The Tibetan Buddhism is Great Vehicle (Mahayana) Buddhism. There are two parts of it: the Exoteric and the Esoteric Buddhisms. The Tibetan Exoteric Buddhism is based on Madhyamika (dBu-ma, `middle way') of Nagarjuna. The Tibetan Esoteric Buddhism, which is different from all other Esoteric Buddhisms, makes the Tibetan Buddhism unique. The Tibetan Buddhism requests the study of the Exoteric Buddhism as the foundation and puts the Tibetan Esoteric Buddhism as the most advanced form of Buddhism. We assume that our visitors have a basic knowledge of the Exoteric Buddhism.
The doctrine of the Tibetan Esoteric (i.e. Tantric) Buddhism is based on `Mahavairocana-sutra', and `Kalacakraindriya-sutra'. Its theory may be summarized as follows: "taking the six elements as essence", "five Buddhas and five wisdoms", "taking the four mandalas as appearance", "taking the three secrets as means", "cause, base, final means" and "anger and fear".
"Taking the six elements as essence" is the Esoteric interpretation of the origin of the cosmos. According to the Esoteric Buddhism, the six elements, the earth, water, fire, wind, air and ether ( consciousness), make up the dhamakaya (cosmic body) of the Mahavairocana. They provide the nature of all creation and are at once the source and the foundation of the existence of all phenomena. As they are possessed by all beings in the universe, they exist in the mind of the laity. This is the something Buddha shares with the layman. However, according to the Esoteric Buddhism, the laity are incapable of recognizing the nature of cosmic beings, "unless they are aided by the supreme benevolent power of the Tathagata", which means the practice of "the three secrets" is necessity if one wishes to purify one's mind and recognize the nature of all cosmic beings.

Font Size: - Large Small Buddhism was introduced in Tibet in the 7th century AD under the reign of King Songtsen Gampo (around 617-650 AD). He married Nepalese and Chinese princesses who were both Buddhists. Buddhist influence in Tibetan religion and culture started when they brought with them Buddhist scriptures and statues. During Landama's reign, Buddhism was banned and eradication of the scriptures and statues began until it was restored again in the 10th century AD. Tibetan Buddhism, also called Lamaism, was established in the 10th century AD and gradually became dominant in Tibet. It proliferated into neighboring provinces and countries later and it gradually split into different sects and gained political influence. Tibetan Buddhism is based on Madhyamika and Yogacara which belongs to the Mahayana school. It utilizes symbolic ritual practices of Tantric Buddhism (Vajrayana) and incorporates features of the indigenous Tibetan Bon Religion. Tibetan Buddhism is more mystical than other forms of Buddhism due to Tantric and Bon influences, relying strongly on mudras (ritual postures), mantras (sacred speech), yantras (sacred art) and other initiation rites which are performed in secrecy.

History
Merchants and salt-traders have been using the high mountain passes from India to Tibet and back again for more than three thousand years, so it is fairly certain that, not long after the time of Buddha Shakyamuni (ca. 560 BCE ) some of the Dharma went with them. However, ancient accounts mention that the Tibetans were a wild and combative people at that time, so until Buddhism was re-introduced in the 8th century of our era it did not have a wide-spread, enduring success.
Though a number of notable translators were responsible for importing Buddhist scriptures and commentaries into Tibet, it is not until the arrival of Padmasambhava,

Like waves, all the activities of this life have rolled endlessly on, one after the other, yet they have left us feeling empty-handed. Myriads of thoughts have run through our mind, each one giving birth to many more, but what they have done is to increase our confusion and dissatisfaction. When we closely examine the ordinary habits that underlie whatever we do and try to discover where they come from, we find that their very source is our failure to investigate them properly. We operate under the deluded assumption that everything has some sort of true, substantial reality. Tibetan Buddhism and the Dalai Lama
in Science Fiction
The Dalai Lama of the near future, a Harvard-educated woman named Sattva, is one of the main characters of Goonan's The Bones of Time This annotated bibliography list, a subset derived from the Adherents.com Religion in Literature database, is intended as a resource for literary research. It lists mainstream science fiction and fantasy novels, short stories and movies (speculative fiction) which contain references to the Dalai Lama, Tibetan Buddhism and/or Tibet in general. It is not necessarily a comprehensive list of such literature, but all Hugo- and Nebula-winning novels have been indexed. This list does not necessarily include every reference to Tibetan Buddhism within each work. Each novel or story is listed only once, with a brief explanation or sample quote. Most works include only one reference, which is given. If a work contains multiple references, this is noted in the listing. Additional references are listed in the main database. Although numerically much smaller than the two major branches of Buddhism (Theravada and Mahayana), Tibetan Buddhism is one of the best known forms of Buddhism in the West. This is due in part to the pacifistic resistance of the Tibetans to Chinese occupation of Tibet, and to the prominence of the current Dalai Lama. Many films have been made focusing on Tibetan Buddhism. In the minds of many Westerners, Buddhism is synonymous with the Tibetan form, even though there are only approximately 6 million adherents (less than 2% of all Buddhists in the world).

Vajrayana (Tantric Buddhism)
Vajrayana, or Tantric Buddhism, has been described as the latest phase in the development and evolution of Buddhist thought. For a long time, Western scholars dismissed Vajrayana as the final "degenerate phase" of Buddhist thought. This attitude was due to the fact that these materialistic scholars had only a Christian or a secular way of seeing the world. They could appreciate ordinary Buddhism ( Theravada , etc), seeing the Buddha as the Christ of the East teaching an essentially moral message, or as a sort of spiritual humanist; but when faced with a system of knowledge and practice that embraced all the magical and occult elements that Western rationalism had rejected centuries ago, could only explain it as some sort of degenerate end phase. Fortunately, in more recent times other Westerners have studied Tantric Buddhism first hand, at the feet of actual Tibetan Masters, and so have a more mature appreciation and respect for that noble tradition. Indeed, if anything good has come out of the terrible Chinese invasion and oppression of the Tibetan homeland in the 2nd half of the 20th century, it has been that this has driven Tibetan lamas and teachers to the West, and encouraged them to spread their tradition among sympathetic Westerners. Vajrayana metaphysics is, like
