103. On Madame Blavatsky And The Mahatmas By Henry S. Olcott

by Henry S. Olcott
[An extract from Olcott's lecture titled "Theosophy, the Scientific Basis of Religion,"
delivered at the Town Hall, Calcutta, India, April 5, 1882.
Reprinted from Olcott's Theosophy, Religion and Occult Science , London,
George Redway, 1885, pp. 121-124.] . . . In the year 1874, Madame Blavatsky and I met. I had been a student of practical psychology for nearly a quarter of a century. From boyhood no problem had interested me so much as the mystery of man, and I had been seeking for light upon it wherever it could be found. To understand the physical man, I had read something of anatomy, physiology and chemistry. To get an insight into the nature of mind and thought, I had read the various authorities of orthodox science, and practically investigated the heterodox branches of phrenology, physiognomy, mesmerism and psychometry. To understand mesmerism one must have read Von Reichenbach’s "Researches on Magnetism, Electricity, &c., &c., in their relations to the Vital Force," and I venture to say that no one can possibly comprehend the rationale of the astounding phenomena of modern spiritualism, who has not prepared himself by a glance at all the subjects above enumerated. So, then, this had been my bent of mind since boyhood, and although I always took an active part in all that concerned my country and fellow-countrymen, and an especially active one during our late Civil War, yet my heart was not set on worldly affairs. In the year above mentioned (1874), I was investigating a most startling case of mediumship, that of William Eddy, an uneducated farmer, in whose house were nightly appearing, and often talking, the

Here is a description of a friend and their talks that I have uploaded to the internet for free downloading or streaming:
I currently have audio files available at www.lessonology.com and in an online public briefcase
I highly recommend Barrett's talks. They have all been recorded within the last three years. I am putting some of his lectures online to them to make them openly available to the public. I am freely promoting his lectures because I have seen that it helps. I have met many people who have benefitted from and gotten a lot out of his college classes as a Philosophy teacher. He is now retired after about thirty years of teaching.
See Barrett’s websites for more information or immediate changes in the schedule of his public lectures: www.absurdistan.cc and ww.transhimalaya.cc . As of this posting, the schedule of his talks is here . Audio CD’s (Compact Discs) of his lectures are available through the contact information at his web-sites.

Theosophy Fr. Alexey Young ACCORDING TO J.K. BAALEN, “Theosophy, or Divine Wisdom, is the apostate child of Spiritism mixed with Buddhism. It is far more complicated and more intricate than Spiritism; at the same time its world-and-life view is more complete and fascinating” ( The Chaos of Cults The founder of Theosophy was Helena Petrovna Blavatskaya, known to her followers as Madame Blavatsky or simply “H.P.B.” Born in Russia in 1848, she was the daughter of noble parents, granddaughter of a princess and, through the Dolgoruky family, a descendent of the 12th century saint, Michael of Chernigov. In her youth she rejected Orthodox Christianity and, in fact, proclaimed “a venomous hatred of Christianity” throughout her whole life (Marion Meade, Madame Blavatsky: The Woman Behind the Myth Although an ex-Theosophist and Orthodox convert told this writer that Blavatsky died repentant and reconciled to the Russian Church in her last days, this has not been confirmed. In fact, primary research into H.P.B.’s “career” is a daunting if not almost impossible task. Marion Meade, a non-Theosophist and Madame’s scholarly biographer, has written: “When [H.P.B.] was forty-five, she looked back on four-and-a-half turbulent decades and observed, ‘One cannot remake one’s past, one can only efface it according to one’s strength.’ Actually she took pains to do both, and given her boundless energy, such efforts at revision were not entirely unsuccessful. For the last fifteen years of her life, she worked strenuously to re-create herself, erasing what she regretted having done, inserting new material, continually editing herself into the person she would have liked to have been” (Meade, ibid.). In this Blavatsky was like cult founders or their movements, who try to eliminate or gloss over the unsavory aspects of their founders’ careers.

By H. S. Olcott [Compiled by S. B. From boyhood no problem had interested me so much as the mystery of man, and I had been seeking for light upon it wherever it could be found. [On meeting H. P. Blavatsky,] our acquaintance at once ripened into a friendship. We found ourselves to be congenial in opinion, and she brought to our intercourse the great resources of a mind stored with a mass of erudition with regard to the arcane or esoteric philosophies of the ancient times. I found her the most intellectual woman I had ever met in my life, a very eccentric personage, but a person who compelled you to either like her very much or to be very antagonistic to her. Besides these extraordinary literary and mental accomplishments of hers, she also possessed in a very striking degree psychical powers such as we read about in the accounts of the lives of ancient sages, and the proof of the reality of which powers was vouchsafed to many witnesses in America for years before we sailed from New York for India; so that naturally those of us who knew her in those times and subsequently, have been unaffected by all the imputations upon her character that have been so rife during the later years of her life. She was not perfect, yet conceding all her imperfections she was greater than her detractors and we loved her for herself and for her cause.

History
Theosophy literally means "wisdom of God." The modem Theosophical movement was founded in 1875 by Helena P. Blavatsky. The wisdom of God, according to Theosophists, is to be found in all religions: "What we desire to prove is, that underlying every once popular religion was the same ancient wisdom-doctrine, one and identical, professed and practiced by the initiates of every country who alone were aware of its existence and importance. To ascertain its origin and the precise way in which it was matured is now beyond human possibility" (A. P. Sinnett, The Purpose of Theosophy, Boston, 1888, p. 25).
Since there is truth in all religions, a Theosophist may pursue any religion he desires. This, however, did not stop Mrs. Blavatsky from detesting organized Christianity: "The name has been used in a manner so intolerant and dogmatic, especially in our day, that Christianity is now the religion of arrogance, par excellence, a stepping-stone for ambition, a sinecure for wealth, sham, and power; a convenient screen for hypocrisy" (H. P. Blavatsky, Studies in Occultism, Theosophical University Press, n.d., p. 13 8).
Source of Authority
There are no sacred books in Theosophy. Revelation comes from "adepts", who are "beings perfected spiritually, intellectually, and physically, the flower of human and all evolution!' (The Theosophical Movement, p. 112). Mrs. Blavatsky was the first individual in Theosophy who received messages from these adepts and passed them on to the world.

112. Theosophy By Annie Besant
An article based on a lecture by Annie Besant on the subject of theosophy.

THEOSOPHY by Annie Besant. (Based on a lecture delivered on a Sunday afternoon
at South Place Institute during the late 1880's) In dealing with a great theme within narrow limits one has always to make a choice of evils: one must either substantiate each point, buttress it up with arguments, and thus fail to give any roughly complete idea of the whole; or one must make an outline of the whole, leaving out the proofs which bring conviction of the truth of the teaching. As the main object of this paper is to place before the average man or woman an idea of Theosophy as a whole, I elect to take the inconvenience of the latter alternative, and use the expository instead of the controversial method. Those who are sufficiently interested in the subject to desire further knowledge can easily pass on into the investigation of evidences, evidences that are within the reach of all who have patience, power of thought, and courage. We, who are Theosophists, allege that there exists a great body of doctrines, philosophical, scientific, and ethical, which forms the basis of, and includes all that is accurate in, the philosophies, sciences, and religions of the ancient and modern worlds. This body of doctrine is a philosophy and a science more than a religion in the ordinary sense of the word, for it does not impose dogmas as necessary to be believed under any kind of supernatural penalties, as do the various Churches of the world. It is indeed a religion, if religion be the binding of life by a sublime ideal; but it puts forward its teachings as capable of demonstration, not on authority which it is blasphemy to challenge or deny.

Definition of Theosophy
Theosophy is essentially a modern version of Gnosticism . The material below was obtained from Theosophy practitioners. One will notice the clear Gnostic and Pantheistic and occult influences, including Sophia. The new twist is the "space alien like" but clearly demonic connection whereby Theosophy was " delivered to the first human protoplasts, the first thinking human beings on Earth by highly intelligent spiritual entities from superior spheres. " Some actually claim that various of these "ascended masters" have been living on Venus for some 18,000 years and will shortly return. This is no joke! New Age spirituality is commonly based on Theosophical principles. The word Theosophy came from:
  • G. de Purucker, Occult Glossary: A Compendium of Oriental and Theosophical Terms , Theosophical University Press A compound Greek word: theos , a "divine being," a "god"; sophia , "wisdom"; hence divine wisdom. Theosophy is the majestic Wisdom-Religion of the archaic ages and is as old as thinking man. It was delivered to the first human protoplasts, the first thinking human beings on Earth, by highly intelligent spiritual entities from superior spheres. This Ancient Doctrine, this Esoteric System, has been passed down from guardians to guardians to guardians through innumerable generations until our own time [Gnosticism] . Furthermore, portions of this original and majestic System have been given out at various periods of time to various races in various parts of the world by those Guardians

Its earliest prominent use is to designate the work of Jacob Boehme and those who embraced his ideas. In 1783, a group of English Behmenists were meeting as the "London Theosophical Society." In this case, the word theosophy is generally written with a lower case initial, and adherents of such theosophy are referenced as theosophers. Helena Blavatsky and her collaborators instituted a Theosophical Society in 1875. The name was suggested by Charles Sotheran, a high-grade Freemason and esotericist who was familiar with Behmenist traditions. This new organization was a lecture society dedicated to topics of comparative religion and occultism, with ideals that included racial reconciliation and internationalism. Increasingly, this new Theosophy incorporated elements draw from Asian religious traditions, which were usually classed as "Esoteric Budhism" ( sic , also the title of a book on the topic by A.P. Sinnett). The doctrines and institutions embodied in the Theosophical Society and its offspring are known as Theosophy with an initial capital, and its adherents are Theosophists. Theosophists maintain that Theosophy is a "body of

He called it Atlantis and inspired his followers with grandiose descriptions of its power and politics, its amazing flying machines and its majestic temple to Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. But Zeus, the reigning god on Mt. Olympus, wasn't pleased. And so, we are told in Plato's Dialogues, the island continent with its magnificent city was swallowed up by the Atlantic Ocean in a massive cataclysmic event. This violent finale breathed lasting life into the myth. Exciting stories don't die quickly, and the magic of Atlantis seems to rise out of obscurity whenever a culture is ripe for pseudo-historical visions of popular occultism. It happened in the 1930s, when Edgar Cayce, the "sleeping prophet," linked the mythical continent to "Mayan land" and, while in a trance, described its technological marvels and the re-incarnations of its inhabitants.

    plural theosophies
    1. Religious philosophy or speculation about the nature of the soul based on mystical insight into the nature of god.
    2. Often Theosophy. The beliefs of a religious sect, the Theosophical Society, founded in New York City in 1875, incorporating aspects of Buddhism and Brahmanism.
[Medieval Latin theosophia, from Late Greek : Greek theo-, theo- + Greek sophia, wisdom.]
theosophy theosophy, [Gr., = divine wisdom], philosophical system with affinities to MYSTICISM that claims insight into the nature of God and the world through direct knowledge, philosophical speculation, or a physical process . Theosophy deduces the essentially spiritual nature of the universe from an assumption of the absolute reality of the essence of God. Theosophists generally believe that evil exists as a product of finite human desires; individuals can overcome it by arousing their latent spiritual powers. Emphasis is given to allegorical interpretation of sacred writings and doctrines. The Renaissance philosopher PARACELSUS combined scientific ideas with theosophical speculation. More recent theosophists include Jakob BOEHME, F.W.J. SCHELLING, and Emanuel SWEDENBORG. Asian philosophy and theology, especially of India, contain a vast body of theosophical doctrine, and modern theosophy draws much of its vocabulary from Indian sources. The Theosophical Society, with which theosophy is now generally identified, was founded in 1875 by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky.
