A Letter by Henry S. Olcott on the Hodgson Report

Published by The Blavatsky Archives Online. Theosophy and Its Opponents [A Letter by Henry S. Olcott on the Hodgson Report] [Reprinted from The Harbinger of Light (Melbourne, Australia),
September 1, 1886, pp. 3281-3282.] Mr. Reimers has received a long and interesting letter from Colonel Olcott on the above subject, which he has handed to us for publication. In the opening sentences the Colonel expresses his pleasure at being in direct correspondence with so earnest, able, and honest a student of psychic science as Mr. Reimers, and proceeds as follows: -
a ) the existence of adepts with developed psychic powers of the highest order; ( b ) the existence of a complete system of spiritual philosophy transmitted from an unknown antiquity; ( c ) of there being a genuine experimental science at its basis; ( d ) of the reconciliation of the latter with our most modern scientific discoveries; ( e Pioneer - which had been pilfered and laid by with malice prepensa Times . But, being so ignorant, it was a shame, almost a crime, that they should have assumed the role of exposers, and should have published anything whatever about the case until, by a series of seances held under scientifically perfect test conditions, they had arrived at clear proof as to the nature of the thing they were investigating. This was the course of Professor Hare, Mr. Wallace, Professor Zollner, Mr. Crookes, and other real investigators. It was also the theory upon which I worked with the Eddys, the Holmeses, and Mrs. Compton, and my over-caution as to parading my personal opinions drew from various men of science the declaration that my case was clearly proved by my facts. This instinct of caution now leads me to refrain from any

GREAT THEOSOPHISTS
T HE K ABALA AND THE K ABALISTS
THE Theosophists of the Middle Ages drew their occult knowledge from two streams of thought which, long before, had sprung from a common source. One of these streams was the Hermetic philosophy, the other was the Kabala. In our modern dictionaries the Kabala is defined as "the mystic Theosophy of the Hebrews." The prominent Kabalistic writer, Dr. Christian D. Ginsburg, speaks of it as a system of religious philosophy, or Theosophy, which not only exercised a powerful influence upon the Jews for hundreds of years, but also captivated the minds of some of the greatest thinkers of Christendom. What is known today as the Kabala is a highly complex system having four distinct divisions. The first, or practical Kabala, deals principally with ceremonial magic. The second division, or the literal Kabala, is subdivided into three sections: (1) the Gematria, which discusses the numerical value of Hebrew words; (2) the Notaricon

INTRODUCTION
THEOSOPHY AS SCIENCE    THEOSOPHY AS MORALITY AND ART THEOSOPHY AS PHILOSOPHY ... THE THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY INTRODUCTION
Theosophy is derived from two Greek words –Theos , God; Sophia, Wisdom –and is therefore God-Wisdom, Divine Wisdom. Any dictionary will give its meaning : “A claim to a direct knowledge of God and of Spirits”, a definition which is not inaccurate, though it is scanty and affords but a small idea of all that is covered by the word, either historically or practically. The obtaining of “a direct knowledge of God” is –as we shall see in dealing with the religious aspect of Theosophy –the ultimate object of all Theosophy, as it is the very heart and life of all true Religion; this is “the highest knowledge, the knowledge of Him by whom all else is known”; but the lower knowledge, that of the knowable "all else”, and the methods of knowing it, bulk largely in Theosophical study. This is natural enough, for the supreme knowledge must be gained by each for himself, and little can be done by another, save by pointing to the way, by inspiring to the effort, by setting the example; whereas the lower knowledge may be taught in books, in lectures, in conversation, is transmissible from mouth to ear.

The Theosophical Society is a religious groups without dogma. Every Theosophist creates his/her own spiritual path. The Theosphical Society does not impose any dogma upon its membership. Thus, the Theosophical Society does not in any way discriminate against persons based upon their sexual orientation. Gay and lesbian members are accepted as any other members of the human family. We have not been able to locate any statements in Theosophical literature either condemning or accepting homosexuality as unnatural or unnatural. However, there is a reference in Madame Blavatsky's writing relating to a shift to asexuality for students of Theosophy: "...but the real adepts - as we are reliably informed - are the most happy of mankind, since their pleasures are connected with the higher existence, which is cloudless and painless. The earliest among the changes felt by the true Chela [student] is a sense of unmixed joy to be rid of the caring cares of common life, and to exist in the light of a supremely great Ideal. Not that any true adept would say aught against the naturalness and sacredness of pure sexual relationships; but that, to become an adept one must expand the finite into the Infinite, the personal into the Universal, man into Parabrahm - if one so choose to designate that Thing Unspeakable."

And articles on Henry S. Olcott and photographs William Quan Judge is a towering figure of the early theosophical movement. In 1875, at the age of 24, he was a co-founder of the Theosophical Society with H. P. Blavatsky and Henry S. Olcott. He continued to work ardently for its cause for the next 20 years, until his death in 1896. As the leading theosophical official in America from 1886 to 1896, he guided the Section so that it became the most vigorous in the Society, with the largest effective membership. He relentlessly pursued his high vision for the Society's work in the world: humanity's great need for a new perspective on itself and the universe. Kirby Van Mater Henry Steel Olcott was President-Founder of the Theosophical Society. A selfless humanitarian, skillful organizer and administrator, and dedicated servant of his and H. P. Blavatsky's teachers for over thirty years, Olcott brought The Theosophical Society into existence as an organization through his determination and resourcefulness. . . . He dedicated his last three decades to helping humanity, and his thoughts and aspirations remained fixed on the mission he undertook for his teachers. His faults have often been noticed, but as Blavatsky remarked: "One thing I do know and my Master and his know it too he has done his best which is all that any of us can do." Sarah Belle Dougherty

The Great Ones have told us: more than anything else do we desire a brotherhood, a brotherhood which will save mankind from the catastrophes which are facing it, brought about by its own folly. The catastrophes, the cataclysms, moral and even physical, which are even now facing us, will surely come upon us unless men and women change their habits of thought and, in consequence, their acts, their conduct. No greater tribute could we render to H.P.B. than by continuing faithfully the work which she so grandly began. G. de Purucker

Annie Besant
image from The Encyclopeadia of the Unexplained , Routledge and Kegan Paul, p.54 A British social reformer and Theosophist, Annie Besant was one of the most active and remarkable personalities of her time. Born Annie Wood, in London, she married a Church of England clergyman named Besant in 1867, but the marriage failed. An ardent Anglo-Catholic as a girl, she moved towards atheism and became a leading figure in the National Secular Society. In 1877 she published The Gospel of Atheism and was unsuccessfully prosecuted for selling 'obscene literature' - a tract advocating birth control. She campaigned for feminist causes, led the London match girls' strike of 1888, and became a member of the executive committee of the Fabian Society. In 1889 she announced that she had abandoned atheism and had joined the Theosophical Society . She swiftly rose to the highest ranks of the Society and after the death of Madame Blavatsky in 1891 she led the majority faction in the Society. With C. W. Leadbeater

Theosophy
According to J.K. Baalen, 'Theosophy, or Divine Wisdom is the apostate child of Spiritism mixed with Buddhism. It is far more complicated and more intricate than Spiritism; at the same time its world and-life view is more complete and fascinating" (The Chaos of Cults The founder of Theosophy was Helena Petrovna Blavatskaya, known to her followers as Madame Blavatskv or simply "H.P.B.' Born in Russia in 1848, she was the daughter of noble parents, granddaughter of a princess and, through the Dolgoruky family, a descendent of the 12th century saint, Michael of Chernigov. In her youth she rejected Orthodox Christianity and, in fact, proclaimed "a venomous hatred of Christianity" throughout her whole life (Marion Meade, Madame Blavatsky: The Woman Behind the Myth). Although an ex-Theosophist and Orthodox convert told this writer that Blavatsky died repentant and reconciled to the Russian Church in her last days, this has not been confirmed. In fact, primary research into H.P.B.'s "career" is a daunting if not almost impossible task. Marion Meade, a non-Theosophist and Madame's scholarly biographer, has written: "When [H.P.B.] was forty-five, she looked back on four-and-a-half turbulent decades and observed, 'One cannot remake one's past, one can only efface it according to one's strength.' Actually she took pains to do both, and given her boundless energy, such efforts at revision were not entirely unsuccessful. For the last fifteen years of her life, she worked strenuously to re create herself, erasing what she regretted having done, inserting new material, continually editing herself into the person she would have like to have been" (Meade, ibid.), In this Blavatsky was like cult founders or their movements, who try to eliminate or gloss over the unsavory aspects of their founders' careers.

Theosophy A term derived from the Greek theos ('god') and sophia ('wisdom') which means wisdom of or about God. In a general sense, theosophy refers to a broad spectrum of occult or mystical philosophies, often pantheistic in nature; i.e., a religious philosophy or speculation about the nature of the soul based on mystical and occult insights into the nature of God. The Western theosophical tradition may be said to be derived from the hermetic tradition of the Renaissance and post-Renaissance and is characterized by an emphasis on the hidden tradition passed down in a succession from the ancients. This tradition is thought to provide a key to nature and to humanity's place in the universe. More specifically, the term Theosophy refers to the beliefs of a religious sect, the Theosophical Society, its offshoots, and the doctrines held by its members, which incorporated aspects of Buddhism and Brahmanism. The most important early figure in the movement was Helena Petrovna Blavatsky , who, along with Colonel Henry Steel Olcott (1832-1907) and William Q. Judge

Marx and Engels on Spiritualism and Theosophy
by Herman A.O. de Tollenaere English home page Friedrich Engels (1820-1895)
There are several ways to look at relationships (friendly or unfriendly relationships) between occultism and political tendencies, such as Marxism. In this regard, Bruce Campbell has observed that "Esoteric and mystical sources have been identified as part of the intellectual background for Hegelian and Marxist thought." He did not elaborate on this observation, however, and neither will we. The statement must relate to indirect influence of pre-1800 ideas via Hegel. This concerns, however, an earlier age than the subject of this article. Nor does this article consider subjects later in history, like reciprocal opinions of twentieth century communists and theosophists in such countries as India and Sri Lanka; though that is part of wider research in which I am now involved. This article is specifically about Karl Marx' (1818-1883) and Friedrich Engels' (1820-1895) views on spiritualism and theosophy. They both embarked on their political careers in the 1840's, in the Communist League, an international organization, in which migrant German workers in England were heavily represented. Nineteenth century spiritualism was a widespread, but not well organized movement. As is well-known, it began with the

Essay on Judge.

WILLIAM QUAN JUDGE
While William was still young, his mother, Mary Quan, died in childbirth. His father Frederick decided to take his children to America where they might have a better opportunity to develop their talents and earn a living. Arriving in New York in 1864, the family settled in Brooklyn where, despite hardship, William Q. Judge attended school. Judge joined the legal staff of George P. Andrews as a clerk and soon took an interest in the profession. While preparing himself for the bar, his father died and Judge found himself thrust into the world. He became a citizen in April 1872 and was admitted shortly thereafter to the State Bar of New York where he practised for the remainder of his life, specializing in commercial law. His compassion, integrity, conscientiousness and intelligence were widely recognized, and he was called 'the Christ of the legal profession.' In 1874 Judge married a staunch Methodist lady who bore him a child. His natural fondness for children increased his pain when his daughter died of diphtheria in infancy. In the same year Judge read Colonel Henry Steel Olcott's accounts of the spiritualistic phenomena occurring at the Eddy Homestead in Chittenden, Vermont. These articles were published in the New York Daily Graphic It was her eye that attracted me, the eye of one whom I must have known in lives long passed away. She looked at me in recognition at that first hour, and never since has that look changed. Not as a questioner of philosophies did I come before her, not as one groping in the dark for lights that Schools and fanciful theories had obscured, but as one who, wandering many periods through the corridors of life, was seeking the friends who could show where the designs for the work had been hidden. And true to the call she responded, revealing the plans once again, and speaking no words to explain, simply pointed them out and went on with the task. It was as if but the evening before we had parted, leaving yet to be done some detail of a task taken up with one common end; it was teacher and pupil, elder brother and younger, both bent on the one single end, but she with the power and the knowledge that belong but to lions and sages.
