Theosophy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Theosophical Seal of the Theosophical Society Theosophy is a body of belief which holds that all religions are attempts by man to ascertain "the Divine ", and as such each religion has a portion of the truth. Theosophy, as a coherent belief system, developed from the writings of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (also H©l¨ne). Together with Henry Steel Olcott William Quan Judge , and others she founded the Theosophical Society in A more formal definition from the Concise Oxford Dictionary describes theosophy as "any of various philosophies professing to achieve a knowledge of God by spiritual ecstasy , direct intuition , or special individual relations, esp. a modern movement following Hindu and Buddhist teachings and seeking universal brotherhood." Adherents of theosophy maintain that it is a "body of truth " that forms the basis of all religions. Theosophy, they claim, represents a modern face of

An Epitome of Theosophy
THEOSOPHY, Vol. 34, No. 6, April, 1946
(Pages 205-209; Size: 13K) From: http://www.wisdomworld.org/setting/epitome.html Theosophy Magazine site [This epitome was first issued as a Theosophical Tract by the New York Branch of the T. S. in December, 1887, and published in the Path by Mr. Judge in the following month. So great was its success in the U. S. that the Theosophical Publication Society in England requested Mr. Judge to revise the leaflet for distribution in Great Britain. This Mr. Judge did, enlarging the leaflet into a booklet under the same title. It was this manuscript which the T. P. S. characterized as "too advanced," giving as its opinion that what was needed was a "stepping-stone from fiction to philosophy."

ORIGEN Only the eye of the Adept can pierce the deceptive veil of phenomenal events and perceive the noumenal causes at work. There were powerful hidden forces operating in the embryonic early church, forces that propelled a Palestinian religious movement into Mediterranean prominence and eventual diffusion over an entire continent. The esoteric gospel of the Christos, focussed in and through that luminous 'Man of Sorrows' known as Jesus, proclaimed the eternal message of immortality in a land of such historic confusion that Apollonius of Tyana declined an invitation to visit Palestine because of its extreme pollution. Jesus had warned, "I have not come to bring peace, but a sword", intimating that he was giving a chance to souls in extremis

The Theosophy of the tao te ching
Part 2
Richard W. Brooks

Lao Tzu uses a number of interesting metaphors to describe Taointeresting because they are not what one would expect in a very male-dominated, material-valuing society like that of ancient China: the female, an infant, water, a valley, a bellows, an uncarved block, and raw (that is to say, unpainted) silk. But those metaphors aptly convey the idea that Nature is without show, ego, and preconceptions. Rather it works best when it draws the least attention to itself, when it nurtures without expecting accolades, is empty, is simple, is humble. It follows, then, that to be most effective in interpersonal relationsor what we might even call personal spiritualitywe must imitate Nature: A man with highest virtue ( te ) is not virtue-conscious;
That is why he has virtue.
A man with lowest virtue never loses sight of his virtue:
That is why he has no virtue. [ch. 38]
Nothing under Heaven is softer or more yielding than water

PICO DELLA MIRANDOLA
Islam spread swiftly, in the East from Arabia through Egypt and the Levant to the gates of Constantinople, in the West across Africa and Spain to Tours. The security of the Church was threatened, mocking its pretence to universal rule, physically by the seizure of the Holy Land, and metaphysically through the introduction of invigorating ideas into the very heart of Christendom. Great Arabic philosophers preserved and taught portions of the Platonic tradition; scientists developed astronomy, alchemy and astrology; Jewish esotericism flourished under the protection of the Koran and the influence of Sufi theosophy; Islamic political expansion into India renewed interest in mathematics and imported the Hindu numerals into the West, providing a system of notation suitable for advanced mathematical investigation. The Second Impulsion found its richest expression in the jewel of the Italian Renaissance, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (1463-1494), younger son of the Count of La Mirandola and Concordia. He studied at the universities of Bologna, Ferrara, Padua and Paris, mastering Italian, Latin, Greek, Arabic, Aramaic and Hebrew. Pico's reverence for prisca theologia

51. Theosophy Library Online - Great Teacher Series - SIMON MAGUS
Extensive article concerning his life and times.
http://theosophy.org/tlodocs/teachers/SimonMagus.htm
SIMON MAGUS
As with the lives of many exalted spiritual Teachers, almost nothing is known of Simon's personal life. A few canards are provided by hostile Christian writers who freely distorted what facts they had and uncritically accepted any tale which could be used to blacken his name. Simon was, however, born in the little town of Gitta in Samaria, a region despised by more orthodox Judaea for its famous healers and magicians, and for its unorthodox thought. Nothing is known of the childhood of Simon or of his training, save that he was the disciple of the Tanaim of Samaria, adept magicians and mystics who openly taught the doctrine of reincarnation. According to Eusebius, Dositheus may have been his teacher. Dositheus is the purported revealer of The Three Steles of Seth archon Hagion Pneuma, the Holy Spirit. Homilies Acts The written works Simon left behind have been destroyed by clerics who found his gnosis too metaphysical to comprehend and too threatening to tolerate. Nevertheless, so profound was his influence in Gnostic, pagan and even early Christian circles that the central themes of his message to humanity have survived massive and sustained efforts to eradicate them. This universal principle is an infinite power, the transcendental root of all that is or can be. In mythic imagery, this substance-principle is called uncreated Fire, and it has two aspects, the dark and invisible Fire, the absolute Root of All, and the manifest fire, the source of all existence. The relationship between these aspects consists in an inexplicable inner process which is the secret working of the Fire itself. This inaccessible activity is the same as that indicated in the philosophical Kabbalah as the emergence of Kether, the Crown and Seed of manifestation, from Ain-Soph Aur, That which cannot be said to exist or to not exist. According to Hippolytus, the most conscientious of Simon's critics:

HERMES TRISMEGISTUS
Theos causes Aeon;
Aeon causes Kosmos;
Kosmos causes Chronos;
Chronos causes Genesis.
that of Aeon is identity;
that of Kosmos is order;
that of Chronos is change;
that of Genesis is life and death.
The energies of Theos are Nous and Psyche;
those of Aeon are immortality and duration;
those of Kosmos are restoration and substitution; those of Chronos are growth and decay; those of Genesis are quality and magnitude. So, Aeon is in Theos; Kosmos is in Aeon; Chronos is in Kosmos; Genesis is in Chronos.
Mists of time and mortal memory obscure awareness of the high and holy beings actively involved in the secret and sacred story of human evolution. Though their ubiquitous presence lies like a luminous arc across the illusory events of time, they leave no biographical tracings in mundane chronicles. Myth and legend essentially retain the efflorescence of their lives, veiled in the code languages of the Mystery temples and disfigured by generations of sectarian priests, pietists and scholars. Where details may be known, they are shrouded in archaic constellations of mystic metaphor and symbolic fable. In India, Narada and Vyasa appear in every age and cycle. In Mesoamerica, Quetzalcoatl was revered as god, archetypal man and ruler. In Chaldea, Oannes the Initiate was portrayed as a human-headed fish. And in Egypt, Hermes-Thoth sweeps through countless centuries as god, king, priest, teacher and Initiate.

Is Theosophy Authentic?
Franklin Merrell-Wolff
Part 1
Vaughan The esoteric Bodha has existed in this world as long has man has existed. From time to time exoteric presentations have appeared throughout the whole history of mankind, but all such presentations have been only partial and, apparently, have always been subject to corruption and decay. From this source came Buddhism, the Vedanta, and all the other great religious and philosophical movements ever known among men. Theosophy, in its primary meaning, is identical with both the utterly pure Root-Bodhi and its esoteric manifestation, while, in the more objective sense, as a movement starting in 1875, it is another opening of the door of presentation. Such is the statement one finds in the source material. The question as to whether Theosophy is what it claims to be does not concern us at this point. For the present we are interested only in its self-definition and its consequent relation to extant religions and philosophies, particularly historic Buddhism. As self-defined it is identical with the Root of all these religions and philosophies and, in especially marked degree, with the Root of Buddhism and Vedanta. Thus, in the FUNDAMENTAL sense, it claims to be identical with both Buddhism and Vedanta. It may well that a scholarly study of the source literature of Theosophy would find a predominance of the Buddhist approach and language. If so, this is quite understandable, since the two intelligences most responsible for Theosophical literature are self-confessed Buddhists in their personal consciousness and background. Nonetheless, they do not affirm Truth as being the exclusive monopoly of historic Buddhism. It is also possible that there does exist some Buddhist sect in which the formulated Dharma exists in a greater state of purity than elsewhere. In any case, Theosophy is not identical with the whole of exoteric Buddhism, nor with any other Oriental philosophy or religion. It ties in with occidental currents as well.

Declaration
The policy of this Lodge is independent devotion to the cause of Theosophy, without professing attachment to any Theosophical organization. It is loyal to the great Founders of the Theosophical movement, but does not concern itself with dissensions or differences of individual opinion. The work it has on hand and the end it keeps in view are too absorbing and too lofty to leave it the time or inclination to take part in side issues. That work and that end is the dissemination of the fundamental principles of the Philosphy of Theosophy, and the exemplification in practice of those principles, through a truer realization of the SELF; a profounder conviction of Universal Brotherhood. It holds that the unassailable basis for union among Theosophists, wherever and however situated, is "

Biographical article.

SYNESIUS
Try to ascend yourself, but do not cause the gods to descend. Employ every form of prudence on your own behalf, as if you lived in an army camp in enemy territory, a divine soul among demons, who, being earth-born, it is reasonable to suppose will attack you, since they become angry if anyone maintains foreign laws and customs within their borders. SYNESIUS The Cyrenaics of the fourth and third centuries B.C. anticipated later Epicurean philosophy. Aristippus of Cyrene held that one can know only one's own sensations, and therefore that pleasure is the only sensible end of human endeavour. For him, given the captivity of the senses, all pleasures are to be considered equally good. Theodorus, his follower, equated happiness with cheerfulness and thus found a basis for distinguishing between greater and lesser pleasures. Anniceris emphasized the pleasures of friendship, society and patriotism, but Hegesias held all pleasure to be illusion, arguing that the most mankind can hope for is the suppression of pain. He taught that death should be welcomed as the terminus of pain. Stoic views found favour among the practical Libyans, and neo-Platonic teachings were widely respected. The Christians of the Pentapolis were proud that the scriptures taught that "a man of Cyrene" had borne the cross of Jesus for him. Synesius was born in Cyrene around AD. 370 into a family descended from the city's founder. Together with his brother Euoptius, and sister Stratonice, he could say without fear of contradiction that "the public monuments of Cyrene show the succession from Heracles to me", and "from Eurysthenes who led the Dorians to Sparta down to my father my pedigree is carved on them". Raised in a manner consonant with his aristocratic heritage, Synesius was imbued with a profound sense of

Theosophy
Theosophy Defined
Although Theosophy contains by derivation the name God and thus may seem at first sight to embrace religion alone, it does not neglect science. It is the Science of sciences, for no science is complete which leaves out any department of nature, whether visible or invisible. Conversely, that religion which, depending solely on an assumed revelation, turns away from things and the laws which govern them, is nothing but a delusion, a foe to progress, and an obstacle in the way of man's advancement toward happiness. Embracing both the scientific and the religious, Theosophy is a scientific religion and a religious science. No new ethics are presented by Theosophy, as it is held that right ethics are forever the same. But in the doctrines of Theosophy are to be found the philosophical and reasonable basis for ethics and the natural enforcement of them in practice. The ideas we entertain of Deity and of the Self, of Nature's Laws, and of Evolution, govern the actions we perform. We are now acting, either consciously or unconsciously, according to the philosophical ideas we hold. Are they the best and highest possible! Theosophy is to be explained by reference to the three great principles which underlie all life, as well as every religion and every philosophy that ever has been, or ever can be. They may be briefly named: (1) The Self, as reality in man; (2) Law, as the

Modern Theosophy
New material is anounced in
The title of this page is meant in two ways. Firstly it refers to the modern theosophical movement as started by H.P. Blavatsky , H.S. Olcott, W.Q. Judge and others. This movement is modern in the sense that its present form is only one and a quarter century old (speaking in 2000). The second meaning refers to the content found here as opposed to that found in the Esoteric Studies Guide . There I have focussed on the occult side of classical theosophy. Classical theosophy means in this case the theosophy of Blavatsky and her Mahatmas. In Modern Theosophy I focus on the more general subjects of ethics inner growth and wisdom metaphysics karma and reincarnation and introductions into theosophy . The writers are mostly from Theosophical Societies - whether founders or more modern. There are also naratives, jokes and stories by W.Q. Judge and others - well worth reading. Krishnamurti is one of the authors presented, even though technically he is not part of the movement. His work has changed the TS-Adyar profoundly though. For that reason excluding him would be folly.

Back to Home Page or Contents Page or Judaism or Index Kabbalah (Cabala) T he Kabbalah (also Cabala, Kabala, Qabalah) is system of thought which was originally included in Jewish theosophy, philosophy, science, magic and mysticism . 'Kabbalah' is Hebrew for "that which is received" and refers to a secret oral tradition of teaching which extends from teacher to pupil. Kabbalah, which is the spelling usually preferred by scholars, specifically refers to oral mystical teaching not normally revealed to the general population, but passed on from the adepts to the initiates. The term "Kabbalah" itself was first applied to secret mystical teachings in the eleventh century by Iba Gabriol, a Spanish philosopher, and has since become applied to all Jewish mystical practice. Although the Kabbalah is founded on the Torah , the Jewish scriptures and other sacred writings, it is no intellectual discipline; and the mystic is not to practice it in solitude, but is to employ it to enlighten humanity. The Kabbalist seeks two things: an union with God while maintaining a social, family, and communal life within the framework of traditional Judaism. Those who have adopted the Kabbalistic teachings have modified these latter aims. In legend God taught the Kabbalah to some angels, who in turn after the Fall taught it to Adam. The Kabbalah was to help humankind to return to God. It then passed to Noah, to Abraham and
