Taoism
A religio-philosophical tradition that has, along with Confucianism, shaped Chinese life for more than 2,000 years. The Taoist heritage, with its emphasis on individual freedom and spontaneity, laissez-faire government and social primitivism, mystical experience, and techniques of self-transformation, represents in many ways the antithesis to Confucian concern with individual moral duties, community standards, and governmental responsibilities. Taoism encompasses both a Taoist philosophical tradition ( Tao-chia ) associated with the Tao-te Ching Lao-tzu Chuang-tzu Lieh- tzu , and other texts, and a Taoist religious tradition ( Tao-chiao ) with organized doctrine, formalized cultic activity, and institutional leadership. These two forms of Taoist expression are clearly interrelated, though at many points in tension. Aspects of both philosophical and religious Taoism were appropriated in East Asian cultures influenced by China, especially Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.
Philosophical Taoism
The text central to all expressions of the Taoist spirit is the Tao-te Ching Lao-tzu after the name of the mysterious master traditionally said to have been its author. The cardinal concept is that of the

Discusses the special relationship between Zen and taoism.
http://www.zenhall.org/Pages/tao.html
The combining of Zen and Taoism is not new. Bodhidharma practiced Taoist yoga in India. He brought Buddhism to China where it combined with Chinese Taoism to produce living Lin Chi (Rinzai) Zen. The great Korean Zen Master Won Hyo combined both practices in the Silla dynasty 1300 years ago, practicing the same Sun-do breathing we teach here today. Japanese Zen Master Hakuin strongly emphasized the importance of Taoist breathing techniques for Zen practitioners.
In the search for awakening to our Essence Mind, Zen meditation is a direct spiritual path. With awakening, all that remains is harmony, love, peace, compassion and wisdom. But with poor health or energy and emotional imbalances, many obstacles arise for deep sitting meditaton. Modern day Zen practitioners unknowingly are not utilizing the benefits that Taoism can bring to their practice. Also, Zen has wisdom which goes beyond the harmonizing benefits of Taoism, but Taoists do not realize this Zen wisdom and for them it is easy to become attached to their own energy.
With wisdom and pure intention, if we combine Zen and Taoism, we can enter a correct spiritual path with balanced health and purified mind, and achieve great awakening.

The Nitty Gritty about Daoism
All right, so we've established that Daosim is an ancient philosophy. Daoism is interesting philosophy. Maybe the best way to organize this is to look at the History of Daoism, the Beliefs and Practices of Daoism, and Daoism in the World Today.
The History of Daoism
Once upon a time, in a land far, far away there lived a little girl named . . . wait this is the wrong book. . . . OK, In the sixth century B.C., there lived a man named Lao Tzu. Unlike modern authors, we don't know much about his life, but we do know that he wrote the Dao De Ching, which is the equivalent of the Christian Bible. Lao Tzu believed in living for the moment. This makes a lot of sense because in sixth century B.C. China, people were not hanging around for more than fifty years. Life was short, as it still is, and Lao Tzu believed we needed to treasure it.
Lao Tzu also had a problem with history and the future. He recognized that the past existed and that the future was coming, but he refused to live in the past and work for the future because one lives in the present and experiencing it was the most important part of life. In this sense, Daoism mirrors the Latin philosophy of "Carpe Diem" or "Seize the Day". Experience each day to the fullest, and let the past worry about itself.
During the time that Lao Tzu was alive, and coming up with the philosophy of Daoism, another man, Confucius, was walking around coming up with his own philosophy. Confucianism is based on the concept that wisdom comes from age. Age is equivalent to old things. The past is old. Thus, the concepts of the past must be good, and we should follow them. (Go back and reread that, it's an important concept.)
