Sources Taoism really has to do with flowing with the Tao ( Dao ) - a word translated to English as "The Way," and has to do with "the natural flow of things", the "course of nature", and is sometimes called "The Watercourse Way." Water is used as a representation of Tao because water always seeks the path of least resistance. It does not compete; it simply spiders out, finds the easiest path and follows it, yet there is nothing stronger. Water will carve through rocks, run around steel or anything which resists it. And it does so by simply rising or using gravity. The Tao Te Ching (or Dao De Jing ) is a collection of writings or thoughts said to be written by Lao Tzu around 600 B.C. The Tao Te Ching is the second most translated publication in the world next to the Bible. So what is this Tao?

    WORLD RELIGIONS PAGE
The founder of Taoism (pronounced dowism), a mystical Chinese religion, is a legendary figure, and many scholars doubt that he ever existed. His name was Lao-tzu (also spelled Lao-tse), and his traditional dates are given as 604-517 B.C. Lao-tzu means the "Old Master," a name relating to one legend that he was born a wise old man with white hair. Legend also says he was a keeper of the royal archives until he decided to abandon society and travel west. As Lao-tzu was leaving the civilized world, a gatekeeper convinced him to stop and write down his philosophy. He took a few days to do this, and then continued his journey. The book of 5,000 characters he wrote has become the central scripture of Taoism, and it is called the Tao Te Ching (The Classic of the Way and its Power). Some writers suggest, however, that the Tao Te Ching was written anonymously in the fourth or third century B.C. It contains 81 short chapters describing the meaning of Tao and how one should live according to the Tao. Though Tao is an indefinable and incomprehensible concept, the word is variously translated "way," "path," and "eternal principle" to give the idea of a creative force which orders the cosmos, life, and reason. Tao is said to be the mother of 10,000 visible things, an ultimate and transcendent reality which is beyond the senses. However, Tao is also used to speak of the way of the universe and the driving principle in nature.

Welcome... Nature's Holism has evolved and continues to do so. The book, Nature's Holism (or ecotaoism ) provides an ecological model as an alternative to the "competitive" theory of evolution Nature's Holism - ecology and evolution:
We will examine how species associated within the same habitat evolve ( coevolution ). I will show you a holistic view of nature and ecosystems. You will see how the interdependence between long-associated (coadapted) species within an ecosystem affects the ecological structure of natural systems. Natural selection acts upon a creature within a specific niche in nature. The animal's biology is defined by this environment - its form, physiology and behaviour are shaped by the complexity of the natural world.
Some excerpts and quotes from chapters of this web page: On Evolutionary Biology:
A document, "Evolution, Science, and Society: a " white paper " on behalf of the field of evolutionary biology" states that "Evolutionary biology is the discipline that (1) describes the history of life and (2) investigates the processes that account for this history. It seeks to explain the diversity of life: the variety of organisms and their characteristics, and their changes over time." As such, biodiversity studies can be said to be part of the discipline of evolutionary biology. As a subdiscipline of evolutionary biology, this study falls within evolutionary ecology. This white paper identifies a priority research area to be "development and testing of predictive theories of the coevolution of interacting species." The focus of this electronic text is on a coevolutionary mechanism.

Tao (pronounced "dao") is the path or the way. It is a universal principle that underlies everything. The workings of Tao are vast and often beyond human logic, and therefore insight and intuition are needed. Meet it, and you do not see its beginning.

    Taoism
, Chinese philosophical and religious system, dating from about the 4th century BC. Among native Chinese schools of thought, the influence of Taoism has been second only to that of Confucianism. Basic Tenets The essential Taoist philosophical and mystical beliefs can be found in the Tao-te Ching (Classic of the Way and Its Power), a composite text dating from about the 3rd century BC and attributed to the historical figure Lao-tzu, and in the Chuang-tzu, a book of parables and allegories also dating from the 3rd century BC but attributed to the philosopher Chuang-tzu. Whereas Confucianism urged the individual to conform to the standards of an ideal social system, Taoism maintained that the individual should ignore the dictates of society and seek only to conform with the underlying pattern of the universe, the Tao ("way"), which can neither be described in words nor conceived in thought. To be in accord with Tao, one has to "do nothing" ( wu-wei Tô ). This power enables one to transcend all mundane distinctions, even the distinction of life and death. At the sociopolitical level, the Taoists called for a return to primitive agrarian life.

    Taoism: the Chinese Religion
"The Taoists aim - depending on the tradition or school they belonged to - was to secure and enjoy longevity or to become one of a variety of immortals" Facilities at Edinburgh for the study of Classical Chinese are unparalleled in Europe. Stephan Peter Bumbacher examines the Taoist traditions and scriptures on which these studies are based Chinas religious landscape has been, and still is, rather complex. When the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci arrived in China in 1583 he faced an intellectual stage on which, as it were, at least three major actors played a role: the Confucians, the Buddhists, and the Taoists. And behind the stage, beneath the surface, were a whole series of local cults - some confined to a single village, others influencing entire areas. Whereas Confucianism can best be regarded as an intellectual tradition concerned with moral philosophy and a codified ritual system reinforcing existing social hierarchies, Buddhism was a religion of foreign origin and was always seen as such by at least some educated Chinese. Chinas home-grown religious phenomena were originally an aristocratic cult centred on ancestor worship - the ancestors of the aristocrats - and sacrifices performed by the King, later the Emperor, and his highest ministers, on behalf of the state. Both were inaccessible to the population at large.
