Spiritism - Feedback

The philosophy known as Spiritualism is based on the simplistic premise that man is a dual being ; consisting of a physical and spiritual component. The physical element (the body) disintegrates at death, but the spiritual (the " soul ", "spirit", personality, consciousness, etc) continues exactly as it was, only in another form of existence: the "Spirit-world" or heaven. The Spiritualists further claim that communication between the disincarnate and the living is possible through a human "medium" or "clairvoyant". Usually there is also a practical emphasis on healing. All Spiritualists are vaguely Christian in that they consider Jesus as some sort of great teacher or divine being, but none are dogmatically or fundamentalistically so. At least as far as metaphysics and cosmology goes, Spiritualism is divided into two main streams, the Anglo-American and the French
Anglo-American Spiritualism
Anglo-American Spiritualism derives in large measure from the writings of Andrew Jackson Davis and Stainton Moses in the last century, and J. Arthur Findlay in this one. In its outlines it can be traced back to at least to the great Swedish scientist, psychic, and visionary Emmanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772), who claimed to be able to perceive and communicate with "angels" (disincarnate souls) in "heaven" and "hell". His voluminous writings became the basis for a new Christian sect; the Church of New Jerusalem or Swedenborgian Church, which gives an

The Seven Principles The Charlatan Meeting Derek Acorah ... Email
Introduction by Michael Courtney-Hunt
We survive physical death. The proof is there, the philosophy and the answers are all there. Even the 'paid' sceptics know this! We all have within us the ability to perceive through our instinctive reaction to a given situation and should rely on our intuition to guide us through this life and on to the next. So where exactly do you go when you need to find this evidence? Well, that depends entirely on what it is that you are looking for. Through this site you will be able to find most of the answers to your questions from either the information contained within or from the mediums, links, videos or books . I hope you enjoy looking at what's available from this site and that it gives you the opportunity to find what you are looking for.

Spiritualism
Spiritualism as a religious movement was a varied set of beliefs and practices related to the conviction that the living and the dead could be in meaningful communication. It flourished in the second half of the 19th century and considerably affected both Universalism and Unitarianism at the time. One event that precipitated "Modern Spiritualism," as it was called, was the 1847 publication of The Principles of Nature , composed by Andrew Jackson Davis, a young entranced seer from Poughkeepsie, New York. He claimed the spirit of Emanuel Swedenborg had dictated the book, an airy speculation on the evolution of the cosmos, culture and religion. In 1848 three young sisters, Margaret, Kate and Leah Fox, generated public excitement with their claim to have contacted spirits of the dead through telegraphic rapping in their home near Rochester. From the Fox sisters' experience came the pattern for the séance, or spirit circle. Soon many "mediums," especially sensitive to "impressions" from spirits, guided hopeful participants. The number of spiritualists in America grew rapidly in the decade of the 1850s. Just before the Civil War spiritualists and non-spiritualists alike estimated the number as two to three million (out of a U.S. population of 30 million). Estimates varied wildly since spiritualism was never a systematically organized phenomenon. It was pervasive into the early 1870s and then began to fade, though never dying out completely. Spiritualism attracted people from every religious background. Many Universalists and Unitarians, especially, were drawn by the hope for communion with the spirits of the dead.

IN PURSUIT OF REALITY
a philosophical essay by Bill Birdsall Each individual perceives reality in a way that is subjective, and there is much difference of opinion between individuals as to which, if any, interpretation is correct. Culture is one influence which helps shape individual concepts of reality. Just as there are differences of opinion between individuals, there are also differences of opinion between cultures. Political and religious wars sometimes result. My own sense of reality is subjective, and undoubtedly flawed by all the errors of thinking that tend to befall human beings. I feel, however, that behind all the subjective realities there is actually an objective reality; truth, were it to be known. This feeling is based on our success in manipulating the physical world; doing things like sending men to the moon. If the underlying science was very faulty, the probability of such things happening would be very low. To approach truth, critical thinking is not a tool to be lightly thrown away. Feelings and intuition undoubtedly have their value in getting through life, but I am uncomfortable delivering myself to faith in belief systems so long as I find reasons to doubt them.

Spiritualism
Spiritualism, belief that the dead manifest their presence to people, usually through a clairvoyant or medium; also, the doctrine and practices of those people who so believe. Although spiritualism has been practiced in one form or another since prehistoric times, modern spiritualism is the result of 19th-century occurrences and research. About 1848 in the United States, sisters Margaret and Kate Fox were exploited by their older sister as alleged child mediums and aroused sensational news stories that spurred the creation of a cult of spiritualism. It was given impetus by the writings of another medium, the American Andrew Jackson Davis, who asserted that he was capable of performing certain intellectual feats while in a trance that he could not perform normally.

Native Spiritualism
Philosophers among the Dènè Hareskins in the extreme north of America recognize four classes of 'Shadow' or magic. Their categories apply sufficiently closely to all savage sorcery (excluding sympathetic magic), as far as it has been observed. We have, among the Hareskins:— 1. Beneficent magic, used for the healing of the sick. 2. Malevolent magic: the black art of witchcraft 3. Conjuring, or the working of merely sportive miracles. 4. Magic for ascertaining the truth about the future or the distant present—clairvoyance. This is called 'The Young Man Bound and Bounding,' from the widely-spread habit of tying-up the limbs of the medium, and from his customary convulsions. To all of these forms of magic, or spiritualism, the presence and aid of 'spirits' is believed to be necessary, with, perhaps, the exception of the sportive or conjuring class. A spirit helps to cure and helps to kill. The free spirit of the clairvoyant in bondage meets other spirits in its wanderings. Anthropologists, taking it for granted that 'spirits' are a mere 'animistic hypothesis'—their appearances being counterfeited by imposture—have paid little attention to the practical magic of savages, as far as it is not merely sympathetic, and based on the doctrine that 'like cures like'. Thus Mr. Sproat, in his excellent work

Introduction
Thank you for taking the time to look at these pages. I would like to offer a relatively short explanation of what I hold to be true with regard to eschatology (the purpose of life and our ultimate destination). I also cover certain areas where "contemporary" and "Literalist" Biblical religion and its many offshoots differ, in greater or lesser measure, in relation to Greater World and Universalist philosophy. To begin with I would like to explain that I accept the Divinity of Christ and that He died so that the world might be saved, but I should also like to point out that this statement can be somewhat misleading unless a fuller explanation is given (this is dealt with in this thesis). Also, I should like to point out that I am aware that ancient and modern day miracles took and take place in the name of Christ. While I am speaking personally, I should also like to point out that I am keenly aware that money should never be taken for personal gain for something which God has given freely, namely, His truth and His power. All use of Divine power must be accounted for at some future time and it is never given for personal material gain.
