Spiritism
Spiritism is the name properly given to the belief that the living can and do communicate with the spirits of the departed, and to the various practices by which such communication is attempted. It should be carefully distinguished from Spiritualism , the philosophical doctrine which holds, in general, that there is a spiritual order of beings no less real than the material and, in particular, that the soul of man is a spiritual substance. Spiritism, moreover, has taken on a religious character. It claims to prove the preamble of all religions, i.e., the existence of a spiritual world, and to establish a world-wide religion in which the adherents of the various traditional faiths, setting their dogmas aside, can unite. If it has formulated no definite creed, and if its representatives differ in their attitudes toward the beliefs of Christianity , this is simply because Spiritism is expected to supply a new and fuller revelation which will either substantiate on a rational basis the essential Christian dogmas or show that they are utterly unfounded. The knowledge thus acquired will naturally affect conduct, the more so because it is hoped that the discarnate spirits, in making known their condition, will also indicate the means of attaining to salvation or rather of progressing, by a continuous evolution in the other world, to a higher plane of existence and happiness.

Spiritualism Also called Spiritism . A system of religious beliefs centered on the assumption that communication with the dead, or spirits, is possible. It implies that the human personality, the spirit or soul, survives death Spiritualism as a movement began in the United States in 1848 with the activities of Margaret Fox and, to a lesser extent, her two sisters, of Hydesville, New York. The Fox sisters were able to produce spirit rappings in answer to questions put to them. After moving to Rochester, New York, and receiving a wider audience through a series of increasingly elaborate public seances , their fame spread to both sides of the Atlantic. By the mid-1850s they had inspired a host of imitators, and Spiritualism claimed two million followers. Margaret Fox admitted later in life that she had produced rapping noises through manipulation of her joints. The repertoire of the early mediums included table levitations ESP , speaking in a spirit's voice during trances, automatic writing , and the manifestation of apparitions and ectoplasm . All such phenomena were attributed by the mediums to the agency of spirits.

Awards About us Denise Pete Mention the word Spiritualism and people instantly conjure up images of people sat round a table holding hands in a dim room. Séances and Ouija boards spring to mind, but this is definitely not what Spiritualism is or about. So what is Spiritualism ? Spiritualism is a way of life which we all abide by out of choice. Being spiritual is not just about going to Church and worshipping God, it is about being loving, compassionate and caring, not only towards others but also towards yourself. It is true there are Spiritual Churches where you can worship YOUR God or whatever you wish to know Him/Her/It as, but you don't have to go to church to be a spiritual person or to worship/praise your God. As with all our sections we invite you to contact us with your views, experiences and questions, as we would like other peoples opinions on all the subjects.

Here are some photos, newspaper articles
and other materials documenting Houdini's
challenges to mediums and spiritualism.
Houdini vs. the Spiritualists
The death of Houdini's mother focused his attention on the thriving business
of spirit mediumship, or the contacting of the dead. Whether Houdini was
genuinely outraged at the victimization of the bereaved, or whether he
simply saw an opportunity to capitalize on public interest, Houdini spent
the last 13 years of his life in a highly publicized battle with the
spiritualists. Using his knowledge of illusion, Houdini was able to duplicate the ghostly apparitions, noises and mysterious levitations produced by the working mediums and their "spirits". His "exposures" became so popular with his audiences that they took up more than a third of his regular program. Coached by the famous psychic Anna Eva Fay, Houdini cleverly became, in his way, the most famous "spiritualist" of all. In 1926, he testified at Hearings on Fortune Telling held in the House

Spiritualism
In 1916 Arthur Conan Doyle made a declaration that would impact the rest of his life. He stated his belief in Spiritualism. Could it be? The man who created the ever-logical Sherlock Holmes believed in ghosts? Spiritualism
The Fox sisters are credited with the birth of Spiritualism. In 1848 Maggie and Katie Fox, discovered that they were able to communicate with a spirit that seemed to inhabit their home in Hydesville, New York. The spirit claimed to be a murdered man who was buried in the cellar. Spiritualism focused on communication with spirits. The movement stressed that there was indeed life after death and that communication with those who had "passed over" was entirely possible. By 1855 two million people were followers of the movement. However as time went by disorganization within the movement and fraudulent practices lead to the movement's decline. By 1900 Spiritualism had lost its popularity. After the First World War the movement once again became popular as people struggled to deal with the loss of loved ones. Early Religious Life The Doyle family was strongly catholic. Conan Doyle was raised in that tradition but he came to question those beliefs. He declared himself an agnostic. So strong were his beliefs that he refused the help of his father’s family in establishing his medical practice. He realized that the family would have recommended him to their church connections. He felt that it would have been hypocritical to draw on that sort of support.

ARTICLES G. N. M. Tyrrell Educated at Haileybury and London University. In 1923 he decided to devote himself entirely to Psychical Research. Wrote several highly acclaimed works. Joined the Society for Psychical Research in 1908 and became President in 1945. The Movement of Modern Spiritualism - G. N. M. Tyrrell - 1. The Attitude of Spiritualists LOOKING AT the mass movement of spiritualism which has increased so greatly during the last twenty years*, one cannot fail to be struck by the attitude, not only of the spiritualists, but also of their opponents. The attitude of spiritualists in general appears to ignore the diversity of difficult points with which the subject bristles and to treat it as a homogeneous whole. Thus they get rid of the need for putting forth the mental effort required for constant discrimination. Once they have sailed into the spiritualistic sea their attitude is one of easy acceptance. This is not true of every spiritualist, but it is the attitude which characterizes a large part of the movement. Psychical phenomena form a difficult subject at best in which balance and poise are needed more than anywhere else. The spiritualists have proceeded to make it more difficult by turning it into a religion. * ISS note: This chapter was written in 1931.

Frank Podmore was born at Elstree, Hertfordshire, on 5th February 1856. The son of Rev. Thompson Podmore, the Headmaster of Eastbourne College, Frank was educated at Haileybury and Pembroke College, Oxford , where he graduated with a first in natural science in 1877.
As an undergraduate Podmore developed an interest in spiritualism and carried out research into psychic phenomena. He joined the Society for Physical Research and although he eventually rejected spiritualism, he did support the idea of extra-sensory perception.
In October, 1883 Podmore and his friend, Edward Pease joined a socialist debating group established by Edith Nesbit and Hubert Bland . It was Podmore who suggested that the group should be named after the Roman General, Quintus Fabius Maximus, who advocated the weakening the opposition by harassing operations rather than becoming involved in pitched battles. In January 1884 the group became known as the Fabian Society . Podmore's home, 14 Dean's Yard, Westminster, became the official headquarters of t
