SOKA GAKKI INTERNATIONAL in the United States (SGI-USA)
ORLANDO, FLORIDA

Soka Gakkai International in the United States (SGI-USA) sprouted roots in Orlando soil in the same manner as it has in other cities across America. In the 1960's Orlando was host to many Japanese war brides who became the founding women of SGI-USA in the Central Florida area. SGI's initial group of believers has since grown to over 400 members in the territory of Orlando with separate districts, groups, and chapters comprising the total number. During this growth period, many fellow believers from other states across the nation relocated to Central Florida to assist with further development of the group and it's efforts to enhance society and culture. SGI-USA Orlando is currently in the process of establishing a community center for the Orlando area which they project will open in the near future. In the meantime, discussion meetings, study meetings and gatherings are held in members' homes and rented public facilities. The format of the gathering is open and friendly, and a discussion-type theme prevails. Visitors are genuinely welcomed and encouraged to ask any questions they may have. In fact, visitors are treated with special preference as responses to their inquiries are generously donated with full explanations from different members providing the objective views of many perspectives. After the meeting, a visitor is surrounded by friendly personal greetings from the members and is assured of a warm welcome.

The Journal of Buddhist Ethics is the first academic journal dedicated entirely to Buddhist ethics, and is innovative in adopting a totally electronic mode of publication. In most other respects, however, it will function as a traditional scholarly journal.
The Diamond Sutra
The World's Earliest dated Printed Book. This scroll was found in 1907 by the archaeologist Sir Marc Aurel Stein in a walled-up cave at the `Caves of the Thousand Buddhas', near Dunhuang, in North-West China. It was one of a small number of printed items among many thousands of manuscripts, comprising a library which must have been sealed up in about AD 1000. Although not the earliest example of blockprinting, it is the earliest which bears an actual date. The colophon, at the inner end, reads: `Reverently [caused to be] made for universal free distribution by Wang jie on behalf of his two parents on the 13th of the 4th moon of the 9th year of Xiantong [i.e. 11th May AD 868]'.

Nichiren , the 13th century Buddhist reformer, taught a simple and accessible, yet powerfully effective, form of practice.
Since its inception in 1930, the Soka Gakkai has adhered to the teaching of Nichiren and devoted itself to realizing its ideals, enabling millions to improve their lives. It also promotes the development of education and inter-cultural understanding to build peace.
Since 1990, Nichiren Shoshu , the order of priests who initially supported the Soka Gakkai , has opposed the Soka Gakkai . The priests' led by high priest Nikken Shonin
A few years ago, many members expressed dissatisfaction with the term temple issue . They felt that it did not reflect our spiritual basis for this movement. Temple issue did not really capture what we are doing, they argued. This is why, in December 1999, SGI-USA's Central Executive Committee adopted Soka Spirit , a name that New York members had come up with, as a suggested new name for this movement.

A Time to Chant is an excellently-written, dispassionate sociological account of Soka Gakkai Buddhism in the United Kingdom. Everyone who reads JBE has heard of Soka Gakkai, and several million people-mainly in Japan but also in many other countries of the world-belong to the movement and regularly practice individual or group daimoku (chanting of the title of the "namu-myoho-renge-kyo") and gongyo (recitation of sections of the The overwhelming majority of members of SGI-UK are in no doubt that the practice of Buddhism delivers the results that it claims, and mostly here and now. According to Wilson and Dobbelaere "of the 96 per cent who chant for particular goals, only 3 per cent said that those goals had not been realized" (195). The goals SGI Buddhists aim at are immensely varied, ranging from acquisition of specific sums of money to compassion towards others and the spread of Buddhism world wide. Soka Gakkai appears able to encompass all of these disparate aims, to foster in its members a spirit of independence and enterprise and, despite the apparently highly individualistic nature of the basic chanting practice, to mobilize the majority of members into collective activities promoting personal, social, cultural, environmental, and spiritual uplift on a global scale.

Buddhist group finds a peaceful home in West Broward Center
By Liz DOUP
Herald Staff Writer
For nine years, Stephen Bon-nell, a Coconut Grove teacher, steadied his wife as she battled ovarian cancer. For eight years, Luci DiCrescenzo of Hallandale gracefully bore the taunts of her Alzheimer's-stricken mother, whom she cared for in her home. As many do in difficult times, Bonnell and DiCrescenzo turned to their faith. As adults, each had joined a Buddhist sect called Soka Gakkai International. It's easy to have missed this small, quiet contingent, one more piece in the colorful tapestry of religions practiced by South Floridians. But Soka Gakkai's profile will rise considerably on Sunday, with the invitation-only opening of its elaborate $20 million Buddhist retreat, built for spiritual gatherings and designed to draw from 12 million members of the religion around the world. Called the U.S. Nature and Culture Center, the complex sits on 125 acres on the far western edge of Broward County.

Though the organization has smaller community centers in other cities including New York and Los Angeles - the size and scope of this center make it unique in the United States.

Neo-Buddhist Fanatics at the door
This magazine has been popping up all over the place lately. The headline reads (loosely) "The Japan that turns away from the great saint Nichiren will surely perish." (Nichiren daishonin ni somuku nihon wa kanarazu horobu.) For those who may not be aware, Nichiren is the 13th century Buddhist founder responsible for popularizing the Lotus Sutra in Japan. Nichiren school Buddhism is of course named after him, and is unique in its veneration and total focus on the Lotus Sutra. In the 1930s a few new lay Buddhist religions were founded in Japan focusing on Nichiren and the Lotus Sutra, though not directly connected to the main Nichiren school. Among these is the infamous Soka Gakkai Kenshokai is the name of this new religion going door to door around Tokyo with the magazine on the left. They seem to be a splinter group from Nichiren-Shoshu, which was previously connected to Soka Gakkai. Anyway, they're very cultish. I would rate them as pushier than either the Mormans or Jehovah's Witnesses. The two women who came to my door a couple weeks ago were insisting that the recent earthquakes were a result of modern Japan's lack of respect for Nichiren. They said they thought China would invade to punish Japan if we didn't shape up and all start chanting "I take refuge in the Lotus Sutra" (Namu Myoho Renge Kyo).
