21. Buddhism Of Nichiren Daishonin
Unofficial. Brief overview of Nichiren buddhism and the soka gakkai.

Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin Interested in Buddhism but didn't know where to look?
Heard of the phrase 'nam myoho renge kyo' but didn't know how to say it?
Wanted something 'more' in your life but wasn't sure quite what that 'more' was?
Then maybe this is what you've been looking for.
Most people in the world today who practice the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin are members of an organisation called SGI (Soka Gakkai International).  Soka Gakkai literally means Value Creation, therefore it the Buddhist Society for the Creation of Value.
All SGI activities are based on the teachings and the individual practice of the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin.  This 13th Century Japanese sage centred his philosophy on what is traditionally thought to be one of the last recorded teachings of the first historically recorded Buddha (variously known as Guatama Siddhartha or Shakyamuni Buddha) which was named the Lotus Sutra.  The Lotus Sutra declares that all living beings regardless of gender or intellectual capacity, can attain the enlightened state of life within their given lifetime.
In common with other Buddhist teachings, individual enlightenment is grasped through the profound realisation of the inseparability of the individual and their spiritual and physical environment and their ability to powerfully influence both.

Behind the SGI’s decision to issue the Gohonzon
On September 7, 1993, adopting a proposal from Sendo Narita, the chief priest of Joen-ji, a temple in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, the SGI announced that it would start issuing Gohonzon, reproduced from a Gohonzon transcribed in 1720 by Nichikan, the 26 th high priest of Taiseki-ji, to its members worldwide. Many SGI members who practiced without the Gohonzon since Nichiren Shoshu’s refusal to grant them the Gohonzon were overjoyed at the news. And many others, filled with hope, have been looking forward to a bright future of the spread of Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism ad a flourishing of the Soka Renaissance toward a world that embraces truly humanistic ideals.

Soka Gakkai International - USA
I. Profile Report
  • Name: Soka Gakkai International is the official name of the lay organization of the Nichiren Shoshu Buddhist religion.
  • Founder: Nikko Shonin started the religion in Japan. Tsunesaburo Makiguchi and Josei Toda began the lay group Soka Gakkai, and Masayasu Sadanaga (who changed his name to George M. Williams) began the group in the United States.
  • Date of Births: Not found
  • Years Founded: Shonin founded the group sometime after 1290 by erecting a temple at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The group was relatively small until Makiguchi and Toda formed Soka-kyoiku-gakkai (Value-creating, Education Society) in 1930. Sadanaga brought the religion to the United States (Washington D.C.) in 1957.
  • Brief History: Nichiren Daishonin (the Great Holy One) (1222-1282) was a Buddhist reformer who believed that a greater Buddha than Sakyamuni would redeem earth. When he died, some of his followers were chosen to protect and upkeep his tomb. After a dispute over the responsibility, Nikko Shonin left the group and established a temple, Taiseki-ji, at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The religion lived, in small numbers, until Makiguchi, at odds with the Japanese government (who held as a state religion, Shintoism), established the Soka Gakkai. He was arrested for his beliefs and died in jail. Toda became president of the group and rallied 300,000 peasants at Makiguchi's funeral. The religion rapidly developed a large lay membership. The group grew in Japan under the leadership of Toda.

    About the Resource Guide
Since 1991 the SGI has gone through dramatic changes as it has become an engaged lay Buddhist community in society. In response to increasing interest and demand for classroom teaching material, this Resource Guide was designed to present a current look at the changes and events shaping the development of the SGI in the United States. Over the last two years, the Resource Guide has proven a useful classroom tool in introductory courses on Buddhism, Asian Religions, World Religions, Japanese Religions, and Contemporary Religious Movements in America. This web presentation is an effort to make the Resource Guide more widely and easily accessible. Many thanks to the SGI-USA Academic Affairs Department for their concerted time and energy in developing the Resource Guide.

Note: me with regard to printing or reproducing this article in any form. CONSUMER BUDDHISM: NSA, PATRIOTISM, AND AMERICA by Harry S. Pariser Former member Veronika Fleming is singularly outspoken concerning her reasons for leaving the sect: "I got not so much bored as disenchanted. It's really great to get together and chant, but when they start hounding you to do it, it's a bit much. They spend as much as three hours a day chanting. I'd rather spend the time playing music." Touching her fingers to the sides of her forehead, Veronika states "They only see the world through the perspective of 'Nam-myo-ho-renge-kyo'. I read the World Tribune. Half of it is crap! It's like these good Christian beliefs that I grew up on, and I just don't need that in my adult life...Buddhism, not chanting, is a way of life; Buddhism takes years. It's pretentious to call yourself a Buddhist just because you chant. So what does all this mean? The abilities of chanting as a valid form of spiritual development is not the issue here; all of the Nichiren sects chant as do members of the Pure Land, and chanting predates recorded history. At question is the belief that worship of a relic, allegedly entrusted with magical powers, can bring material gain. At issue here is the question of whether one allies oneself with an organization which stresses that only its beliefs and its beliefs alone are correctan organization which subjugates the individual's development of an independent, well informed political and social conscience and substitutes the organizational point of viewor if one should strive for spiritual development on one's own, placing morality above materialism. It is a question that each of the organization's followers would do well to search their own hearts for an answer to.

Nichiren Buddhism itself also comprises several major schools, such as Nichiren Shu and Nichiren Shoshu , and many sub-schools, and it has spawned several of Japan's new religious, such as Reiyukai and . Various forms of Nichiren Buddhism have had great influence among certain sections of Japanese society at different times in the country's history, such as among the merchants of Kyoto in Japan's middle ages and among some ultranationalists during the pre- World War II era. Nichiren Buddhism is generally noted for its opposition to other forms of Buddhism and an evangelical streak as evinced by some schools' practice of shakubuku , efforts to convert others by refuting their current beliefs and convincing them of the validity of Nichiren's teachings.

is a war of words. We struggle to convince people of the truth of this Buddhism through the words we speak and write. And we have all probably experienced just how hard this can be, whether in explaining our Buddhist practice to our family members or in discussing matters regarding Nichiren Shoshu.
We have worked especially hard over the last several years to find the best words to spell out the temple issue: the SGI's stance toward Nichiren Shoshu's determined efforts to confuse people about Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism. Sometimes we have used language that has been too emotional, and our point has been lost on our listeners. Other times, we have not emphasized the seriousness of the issue enough; our way of introducing it has caused people to see it as unrelated to their daily practice.
We have learned that there are certain words and terms that we must be careful to explain fully or use sparingly or even avoid. If we say that the priesthood is evil, for instance, it helps to explain what we mean each time by the word evil; we have to share how the Daishonin uses this word to refer to priests who promote distorted versions of Buddhism.
A few years ago, many members expressed dissatisfaction with the term
