Sikhism is about 500 years old and the youngest religion in the world. The Sikh religion today has a following of over 27 million people worldwide and is ranked as the world's 5th largest religion. It was founded by SIRI G URU NANAK DEV JI , born in 1469, the first Guru of the Sikhs. The succeeding nine Gurus nurtured and developed his ideas and teachings. Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Guru, brought to an end to the line of human Gurus and in 1708, installed SRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB JI , as the permanent Guru of the Sikhs. The holy scriptures include the writings of the Ten Gurus and other holy saints which only talks about one almighty GOD. Sikhs do not believe in anything else, but one almighty God WAHEGURU. There are lots of names of God and Sikhs accept that. Sikhs are instructed to remain free life and respect all religions.
Sikhism is a completely different religion than Hinduism and Islam. In Sri Guru Granth Sahib, it is well stated that Sikhism is a separate religion rather than a sect or movement of Hinduism or Islam. This was well said by Ten Gurus too. Find out how Sikhism is different from

Sikhism
Sikhism, the youngest among world religions, arose over 500 years ago in (sub-continental) India. It surged up across the horizon as a great revolutionary force that changed the very course of Indian history. With its values of universalism, liberalism, humanism and pluralism, preached and propagated in the medieval age, Sikh religion introduced new elements which later flowered out in modern world civilization. Sikhism, a unique ' revealed ' religion originated with Guru Nanak (1469-1539 AD) who was succeeded by nine other Prophets-Guru Gobind Singh (1666-1708 AD) being the last and tenth Prophet. It is a distinctive monotheistic faith envisioning one Supreme God who is Creator also. Sikhism endeavored for a new dispensation characterized by the values of liberty, equality, justice, tolerance and non-violence, discarding discriminations of all kinds on grounds of creed, caste, class, race, region, sex, etc. God is realizable by man in his very earthly, household life, through spiritual enlightenment, moral responsibility, intellectual catholicity and social commitment. The word 'Sikh' in the Punjabi language means 'disciple', Sikhs are the disciples of God who follow the writings and teachings of the Ten Sikh Gurus.
Philosophy and Beliefs
  • There is only One God. He is the same God for all people of all religions.
  • The soul goes through cycles of births and deaths before it reaches the human form. The goal of our life is to lead an exemplary existence so that one may merge with God. Sikhs should remember God at all times and practice living a virtuous and truthful life while maintaining a balance between their spiritual obligations and temporal obligations.
  • The true path to achieving salvation and merging with God does not require renunciation of the world or celibacy, but living the life of a householder, earning a honest living and avoiding worldly temptations and sins.
  • Sikhism condemns blind rituals such as fasting, visiting places of pilgrimage, superstitions, worship of the dead, idol worship etc.
  • Sikhism preaches that people of different races, religions, or sex are all equal in the eyes of God. It teaches the full equality of men and women. Women can participate in any religious function or perform any Sikh ceremony or lead the congregation in prayer.

Back to India Religion Table of Contents Sikhism has about 20 million believers worldwide but has an importance far beyond those numbers because Sikhs have played a disproportionately large role in the armed forces and public affairs in India for the last 400 years. Although most Indian Sikhs (79 percent) remain concentrated in the state of Punjab, nearly 3.5 million Sikhs live outside the state, while about 4 million live abroad. This Sikh diaspora, driven by ambition and economic success, has made Sikhism a world religion as well as a significant minority force within the country. Introduction
Sikhism was founded in the fifteenth century by Sri Guru Nanak Dev, the first of Gurus born in Talwandi (now Nankana Sahib) in Seikhpura in the district of Lahore (in Pakistan). He made no attempt to build up a new religion. He tried to have a unifying religion to embrace both Hindus and Mohammedans. He insisted on the worship of one God, the Creator and the Supreme Ruler. Who is all and apart from Whom any thought of individual existence is only Maya Guru Nanak tried his level best to join the Hindus and the Musalmans in one league of love to God and service to man. The cardinal doctrines of Sikhism are the unity or oneness of God and the brotherhood of man. Love to God and the teacher is the very basis and the very root of Sikhism. In its philosophy it is Hindu. It is reformatory in its nature. Sikhism is a movement essentially of Bhakti. Guru Nanak taught that one can obtain his emancipation through the name of Hari. Guru Gobind gave to the Sikhs their great military organisation. He was a great military organiser. The word ‘Sikh’ simply means a disciple. It is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Shishya’ or disciple. Sikhism enjoins that obedience to the Guru brings release from future birth, and the attainment of eternal bliss and immortality.

Sikhism is not an ethnic religion and welcomes converts and many people from other faiths have converted into Sikhism. Guru Nanak was born in 1469 AD and preached of The One God whose name is True . He condemned idolatry and distrusted all rites and ceremonies. Sikhs believe in one supreme eternal reality, The Ik Omkar , the God who is the Truth that is immanent in all things in creation and that is the creator of all things. This Truth is without fear and without hatred it is not subject to time, it is beyond birth and death and is self-revealing. They believe that God ( Waheguru ), who is omnipresent, omnipotent and immanent as well as transcendent, is the creator of the universe and everything in it. By recognising divine self-expression and truth one can form a relationship with the Creator because he is formless, inscrutable, and beyond the reach of human intellect. By meditating on God's Name (nam) and Word (shabad) which have been given by the Guru one can form a relationship with God and attain Moksha.

Sikhism is a religion all but unknown to western civilization. Its adherents are to be found for the most part in the Punjab province of India. A fairly recent religion, Sikhism is an attempt to harmonize two of the world's greater religions, Hinduism and Islam. Sikhism is the third major branch of Hinduism and was founded by a man named Nanak. It also owes much to Islam.
History of Sikhism
Nanak: the Founder
Nanak was born in the Indian village of Talwandi, some 30 miles southwest of Lahore, capital of Punjab. The date of his birth is given as 1469 A.D. His parents were common people who embraced the Hindu religion. There are folk stories of Nanak's youth which depict him charging a Hindu teacher to know the true name of God. At an early age, Nanak supposedly gave religious instruction to certain Brahman priests concerning the material sacrament. Whether these stories are true or not, his life was devoted more to meditation and religion than to work. The occupations chosen for him by his parents were not satisfying and caused him to be somewhat of a black sheep within his family. He eventually took a government position which was offered him by his brother-in-law in another town. However, Nanak remained unhappy and continued his constant search for religious truth.
At the age of 33 he was said to have received his divine call.

Indian monotheistic religion founded in the late 15th century by Guru Nanak.
Most of its 18 million members, called Sikhs, live in the Punjab, the site of their holiest shrine, the Golden Temple, and the center of Sikh authority, the Akal Takht. The Adi Granth is the canonical scripture of Sikhism.
Its theology is based on a supreme God who governs with justice and grace. Human beings, irrespective of caste and gender distinctions, have the opportunity to become one with God. The basic human flaw of self-centeredness can be overcome through proper reverence for God, commitment to hard work, service to humanity, and sharing the fruits of one's labor.
Sikhs consider themselves disciples of the 10 Gurus. They accept the Hindu ideas of samsara and karma, and they view themselves as the Khalsa, a chosen race of soldier-saints committed to a Spartan code of conduct and a crusade for righteousness.
The emblems of the Khalsa, called the five Ks, are kes (uncut hair), kangha (a comb), kachha (long shorts), kirpan (a sword), and karka (a steel bracelet).
