There is no structured religious system, no bible, rather an inherent belief in the spiritual world that on the earth plane is inhabited by both humans and kami alike. During my wedding, the priest called upon the kami to be present at our wedding, to actual reside in the altar. It was a very special wedding ceremony for us. Shrine maidens also help with the wedding ceremony, providing a blessing upon my husband and I as well as all those present.
Sacred Kami
Shintoism contains an innumerable amount of Kami - ancestoral spirits of Japan, kami associated with creation or regional kami. Some people are believed to live on in the afterlife as special kami. Kami can take many forms, and can behave badly or with great mercy.
Amaterasu-o-mi-Kami Perhaps one of the most famous stories of a deity is that of the sun goddess Amaterasu-o-mi-kami(which means "glorious goddess who shines in the heavens"). Amaterasu had hidden herself away, taking light wither her, as she was ashamed of her brother Susanoo's horrific behavior. Eventually Amaterasu was coaxed out of hiding when she heard singing, music, dancing and laughter just outside her cave. Upon emerging from the cave, she saw her reflection in a mirror, which had been placed by another kami, and vowed never to return to the cave again. Thus light returned to Japan.

Japanese Shintoism. The Yengishiki is a compilation of Shinto rituals. It was copied down around AD 927, but is certainly much older than that, possibly thousands of years older. The selections here are: Harvest Ritual. Rituals to the Sun-Goddess. The Purification Ritual.
Shinto means the "Way of the Gods." Shintoism is a sort of ancestor-worship, which both seeks the favor of the good spirits from the past and dreads the attacks of evil spirits. The chief single shrine in Japan today is that of the Sun-goddess at Ise, who is revered as the great ancestress of all the Mikados and, in some sense, of all the Japanese. There are also strong aspects of animism and nature worship, and much of the rituals are designed to connect people to the seasons and changing rhythms of nature.
The early rituals recited by the Shinto priests, some of them doubtless of an antiquity far exceeding the Kojiki, are preserved to us by the Yengishiki. This is a book in which the rituals were copied down a thousand years ago (AD 927). Yet these chants have in the Yengishiki the same form in which they are often repeated today. In other words, Shintoism does not change; it clings to the recital of old formulas. So that these Shinto rituals of the Yengishiki may well vie in age with the barbaric chants incorporated in the Kohiki and Nihongi and attributed to the very earliest Mikados.

SHINTOISM
Historical Development
Shinto retains some aspects of kami no michi, the way of the gods, observed by those who inhabited the islands in prehistory. Kami were powers that inhabited sacred places or were to be found in superior people. Ordinary people gave offerings of fruit, vegetables and wine to sacred places marked off by a Torri (gate) to express reverence for land and leaders of heaven and earth. Shinto is an ethnic religion, one belonging only to the Japanese. From prehistoric times, the Japanese worshiped kami, powers in natural phenomena. Kami could become humans and vice versa. Women served as shaman (miko). When the Koreans brought writing, books, painting and other art forms to Japan, and the Chinese brought their religious stories, the Japanese responded by collecting their own religious dramas (8th century C.E.). The early Japanese believed the islands were generated from the interaction of the male principle Izanagi (He Who Invites) with Izanami (She Who Invites). These two demiurges fished the islands out of brine. Then they produced many other Kami of natural phenomena (sun, storm, moon, etc.) A descendant of the original Kami, named Jimmu, began to dominate human affairs. Jimmu was believed to be the first

Shinri Kyo Sect "To the most holy Kami, Izanagi, who purifed himself by ritual bathing in the calm sea in the morning sun—I entreat him to purify away all the impurity, disasters, sins, and faults.” The Purification Words Shinto, “the Kami Way,” is the indigenous faith of the Japanese people. Deeply connected with Nature, Shinto finds a healing and purifying power in mountains, streams, wind, and trees. The essence of life energy in natural phenomena is deified and worshipped as Kami. The four elements of worship are purification, offering, prayer, and symbolic feast. The goal of Shinto is the removal of the "dust" which hides the divine nature of human beings.

Shintoism
The Shinto religion was started in the Tokugawa period (1600-1868) of
Japanese history. The Tokugawa “Enlightenment” inspired a group of people who
studied kokugaku, which roughly translated means “nativism,” “Japanese Studies,”
or “Native Studies.” Kokugaku's intent was to recover “Japanese character” to
what it was before the early influences of foreigners, especially the Chinese.
Some of these influences include Confucianism (Chinese), Taoism (Chinese),
Buddhism (Indian and Chinese), and Christianity (Western European). The
kokugakushu (“nativist”) focused most of their efforts on recovering the Shinto
religion, the native Japanese religion, from fragments of texts and popular religious practices. However, Shintoism is probably not a native religion of Japan (since the Japanese were not the original “natives” of Japan). There really is no one thing that can be called “Shinto,” The name itself is a bit misleading because
