Welcome from Dr. Alfred Bloom
The purpose and mission of this website is to share information concerning Shin Buddhist tradition and Pure Land Buddhism as it is presently practiced and interpreted by Shin communities in the West and Japan. I hope you will find value in the information, resources, and research material here and I look forward to hearing from you via e-mail with questions or comments. "In Buddhist tradition, light stands for wisdom. It is frequently presented in sutras as a stream of light coming from the Buddha and illuminating every aspect of the cosmos. In modern terms, it means to see things as they really are. Because Buddha sees things as they really are, he is able to assist all beings to enlightenment, despite their delusions and ignorance." from "Strategies for Modern Living" by Alfred Bloom.

BOB ABERNETHY , anchor: For Japanese-American Buddhists, last weekend was the Feast of Lanterns, when Buddhists pay special tribute to the dead. It's called Bon or Obon, and our guides were the Nakamuras Ken, Nori, and their children, Maya and Greg at the Shin Buddhist temple in northern Virginia, where the ashes of forebears are kept.
KEN NAKAMURA (Shin Buddhist): Bon as it's pretty much observed around the temples in the United States is a two-day celebration. The Bon dance is usually first, and the Bon service is the next.
The sense of ancestor worship is not carried forth as much here in the United States. We've lost that aspect of ancestor worship that was part of the amalgamation of Buddhism as it is celebrated in Japan.
When we celebrate Bon, we don't think of spirits coming back. We think of it as a memorial service, a time to remember those who have passed on.

Apparently he received teaching, through a vision, directly from the future Buddha Maitreya who provided him with a series of texts. Shin Buddhist Studies (Master's and Doctoral Programs)
The aim of the program in Shin Buddhist Studies is to reflect upon the structure and meaning of human existence through academic study of the fundamental scriptures and authoritative texts of Shin Buddhism. The Shin tradition emphasizes the necessity of "listening to the Dharma" in the quest for one's authentic existence. It is with such an attitude that students approach Shin Buddhist Studies. This approach, however, does not mean a suspension of critical judgment, but indeed requires the fullest use of one's intellectual faculties. The program is centered on a careful study of Shinran's Kyogyosbinsho , the fundamental outline of Shin Buddhist faith, the Threefold Pure Land Sutras - Sutra of Eternal Life, Meditation Sutra and Amida Sutra and works of the patriarchs of Shin Buddhism, among them T'an-luan's Ching-t'e Lun-cbu and Shantao's Kuan-wu-liang-shou-ching-shu To assure basic understanding of the fundamental concepts of Shin Buddhism as well as Buddhism in general, students who have not taken the following courses during their undergraduate years are required to take them without credit: Introduction to Shin Buddhist Studies; Readings in Kyogyoshinsho ; one other course in Shin Buddhist Studies; Introduction to Buddhist Studies; and one other course in Buddhist Studies.

Project for International Buddhist Studies:
The aim of this project is to promote the exchange of ideas between Buddhist scholars of Otani University and those of non-Japanese institutions and to consider ways in which academic cooperation can be carried out most effectively.
Project for Research of Shin Buddhist Historical Documents:

Some News about Mugeko
Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience.
It has been necessary to move Mugeko to a new web-site because of its increasing size and new content. We made the decision after much agonising reflection and we did not want to cause confusion to our supporters but we were left with no real choice. The content of Mugeko has been incorporated into a larger site entitled nembutsu.info When you get there, please remember to bookmark the site, or add it to your 'Favorites'. nembutsu.info has several great web-sites:
  • Speaking Personally contains essays and articles which express a personal view of Jodo Shinshu. It is already proving to be a popular addition; Music includes some great files for meditation and reflection; Poets Corner is the most popular site on nembutsu.info; What's New brings you up to date with new additions to nembutsu.info; and nembutsu.info still includes all of the depth and insight that you got used to on Mugeko. The main list of high-quality, scholarly articles may be found in the Contents list of the main page.
