Shin Buddhism
At the heart of the Shin Buddhist teaching lies a vision of true reality as alive with wisdom and compassion, working to bring all beings to the highest fulfillment of human life, the attainment of Buddhahood.
Shinran teaches that this activity manifests itself as Amida Buddha, who resolved to save all beings by bringing into his Pure Land, the realm of enlightenment, all who say his Name, entrusting themselves to his Vow. He thus performed practices for long eons and fulfilled this Vow, so that his Name, Namu Amida Butsu, came to resound throughout the universe, awakening all beings to the reality of great compassion.
Saying the Name results in birth into the Pure Land, not because it is a good act that people perform, but because it is the activity of Amida Buddha himself giving the virtues of his own practice to them. Shinran therefore stresses that genuine nembutsu arises naturally and spontaneously from the Buddha's mind that unfolds itself in us and transforms our minds into wisdom and compassion.
As long as we perform religious practices or say the nembutsu contriving to achieve Buddhahood, our acts are based on attachment to our own goodness. In fact, we constantly cling to imagined selves that we take to be permanent and real, seeking to enhance and protect ourselves by erecting barriers against all that we see as standing apart. Thus arise the feelings that poison ordinary life - desire, envy, anger, fear. Acts rooted in such anxiety and self-attachment can only lead to further pain.

11/19/2004: "Engaged Shin Buddhism"
The events of the past few weeks, the American election, the numerous and quite questionable irregularities associated with the new voting machines and the continuing conflagration in Iraq has occupied much of my time and energy. I have been busy writing articles, poetry and letters, all in an attempt to re-engage myself after a short period “away.” I have always been what is now widely called an “engaged Buddhist” and have been thinking about what is is we as Shin Buddhists can contribute to this field.
But I remain with some of my original questions about what it is we can offer and what specifically Shin Buddhists might “do” to be more “engaged” in the world (if in fact it is assessed we need to be as I assert.)
Every morning I recite the Jodo Shinshu Creed and find it a more suitable (for me) summation of Shin than the more well-known Ryôgemon. The last verse in particular stands out:
“Rejoicing in the Compassion of the Buddha, respecting and aiding one another, I shall do my best to work for the welfare of society.”

Abstract "Do you think that zazen is fundamental?"
"I'll be radical and say 'no.' . . . I have met wonderful people who don't practice zazen who I think are enlightened. . . . If you mean, like the Sixth Patriarch, that the elimination of subject-object is indispensable, I would agree. But as simply sitting, it is not essential."
(exchange between Christopher Queen and Tetsugen Glassman Rooshi in Queen 2000, 122) As the twenty-first century begins, Buddhism in the "West" (which will refer in this article particularly to Buddhism in the United States) can look back on about fifty years of striking development. The expansion since WWII has become so extensive that recently the Western Buddhist emergence per se has become an independent theme for academic research.( This investigation starts with a problem exposed by these recent inquiries into the Buddhist-Western encounter: what appears to be a discrepancy between certain alleged goals of a "democratically" reformulated "American Buddhism" that have been enunciated by a number of non-Asian (non-Japanese-ethnic(

Excerpt
As Charlie Parker devotees will attest, improvisation at its most thrilling, if not its most ingenious, is often the result of careful planning. Cannot something similar be said of interreligious dialogue? All our planning and study are best put to use when they suddenly become mere prologue to an encounter that has forced us off the well-trodden path. A dialogue meeting at Loyola Marymount University, September 9-14, 2001, began with much planning and became highly improvisational on September 11th. The roots of this conference go back to discussions between Dennis Hirota and myself in Kyoto in 1998-1999. The two of us are interested in contributing to the future development of Shin Buddhism by placing it in dialogue with Christian theology. The focus here is on Christian theology as one aspect of Christianity's response to the modern world. We are both...

The Diamond Sutra
The World's Earliest dated Printed Book. This scroll was found in 1907 by the archaeologist Sir Marc Aurel Stein in a walled-up cave at the `Caves of the Thousand Buddhas', near Dunhuang, in North-West China. It was one of a small number of printed items among many thousands of manuscripts, comprising a library which must have been sealed up in about AD 1000. Although not the earliest example of blockprinting, it is the earliest which bears an actual date. The colophon, at the inner end, reads: `Reverently [caused to be] made for universal free distribution by Wang jie on behalf of his two parents on the 13th of the 4th moon of the 9th year of Xiantong [i.e. 11th May AD 868]'.
