Introduction Today's health care professionals work hard to promote hygiene, prevent and detect disease, cure patients, and when that is impossible, reduce their suffering. Still, it is worthwhile to remember that the modern practice of medicine has not always been with us but was developed over thousands of years. We think that you might enjoy a quick summary of its development and hope that you find our short history of western medicine interesting. If after viewing this section, you'd like to find out more about the subject, look in your local library catalog under "Medicine, History." Some of the books we used to prepare this site are A History of Medicine by Lois M. Magner, The Doctor in History by Howard W. Haggard, Disease and History by Frederic F. Cartwright, The Story of Medicine by Arthur L. Murphy, and The Age of Agony by Guy Williams. There are also several excellent medical history sites on the web that we think are well worth visiting: The study of the history of medicine is a thriving academic career. Professional medical historians usually have earned doctoral degrees and serve as university faculty members, often at medical schools. If you are interested in learning more about a career in medical history, you may want to visit these websites:

Shamanism Home www.drumcircles.ca Shamanism Shamanic Healing ... Acknowledgements "I like the term shaman , which is Eastern in its origin, because it comes with the understanding that the shaman must know about both the "good" and the "bad," in order to defend himself and help others. The shaman is someone who is responsible both to his own nature and to nature in general. He (or she) is aware of life's cycles and how these changes connect inside and outside his own being. This is an awareness that the shaman can impart to those who truly wish to nourish themselves as well. Shamanism may not be a science, but it is a prescience that is empirical in nature, where the observable can be studied and worked with. If we watch carefully, we will see that the future is a direct causal progression of what we perceive each moment. We must learn to observe and read the future within the symbolic cosmology of our surroundings. If that future is good then we can embrace it if not, we can work to create another.

Faces in Shamanism of Korea
Korean Shaman Painting is a kind of religious painting which shape gods worshiped by shamans in a human figures, put in a shrine. There are many words for Korean Shaman Painting such as Hwan, sugarless painting, but as it is a realistic painting of a god, it is generally called Korean Shaman god Painting Shamanism of Korea, which has the longest history since Kochosun, accepted shaman gods and foreign religions such as confucianism, buddhism and zen. Shamanism of Korea has as various gods as ½Å°ü in shamanism. It is divided into Korean shamanism (Mu) and godual shamanism and hereditary shamanism depending on whether a shaman is possessed of a god-god or not divides. As Korean Shaman god Painting is a painting of a god's god experienced while a shaman was receiving a god's god, no Korean Shaman Painting can generally be found in hereditary shamanism.
The number of Korean Shaman Painting is in proportion to that of gods as Korean Shaman Painting has. It has god of nature, which is god of which the function is to provide natural object that can be worshiped. And it has human god that can be worshiped. Among gods of nature there are god of sky, god of earth, god of water, god of agriculture, god of fire, and god of azimuth and so on.
For example there are the god of the sun, the moon, the god of star general, the god of seven stars, the god of a mountain, and three house gods and so on. These gods of nature govern the universe. Human gods are people with worldly power such as kings, queens, generals, senior monks, high and ranking officials, legendary figures, and religious figures. Most of these human gods were made to be worshiped by the changes of the time, social circumstances, and wars. That is to say, most of them died unfortunately. Linda Thurston's Masters thesis explores entoptic imagery in Paleolithic cave art, and controversy regarding shamanism and trance states. Extensive bibliography.

Entoptic Imagery in People and Their Art
by Linda Thurston Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts to the faculty of the Gallatin Division of New York University, April 15, 1991
Introductory note to 1997 web edition:
Below is a text-only edition of my M.A. thesis which I am making accessible via the web to participate in the discussion regarding interpretation of Paleolithic cave/rock art as an expression of trance states, argued to be shamanism. References: Science News October 5, 1996 "Visions on the Rocks" by Bruce Bower, Cambridge Archaeological Journal , April 1995 article by J.D. Lewis-Williams, Current Anthropology , April 1988, "The Signs of All Times," by J.D. Lewis-Williams and T.A. Dowson. Summary: I think that the association of trance states in the interpretation of Paleolithic rock art, particularly the inclusion of elements called the "signs" in relation to more complex imagery (such as animals), is compelling. My study researched what was known about entoptic imagery (images that arise within the human optical system, rather than a reflection of the outside world) in human biology, and what was known about hallucination and trance states in cross-cultural anthropological studies. My conclusion is that this sort of imagery is indeed something that is common to humans in our biology, and in that regard our Paleolithic ancestors are us. Entoptic imagery in art, associated with trance states in their broadest interpretation including dream states, is a pan-human phenomenon.

This broad and vague usage brings with it a lot of miscommunication and confusion.
What is Shamanism?
Shamanism comes from an Evensk word from the Tungus region of Siberia. Michael Harner's translation of 'shaman' is either "one who sees in the dark" or "one who sees with eyes closed." The word 'shaman' is not gender specific. It has no linguistic connection to 'man' or 'woman' and the pluralized 'shamen' or feminist 'shawoman' and 'shamaness' are misinformed at best and political or ignorant at worst. The word shaman describes a very specific role and methodology within Siberian tribal society. The methodology includes the use of the drum beat to instigate an ecstatic altered state of consciousness that allows the shaman to send his or her soul flying into the various spirit realms. Unlike other priests or magicians, instead of calling the spirits to our world, the shaman usually goes to the spirits.

Highlights a few aspects of the Golden Dawn Enochian system, and includes an article on Enochian shamanism.

Enochian Shamanism
A couple of years ago I have begun to combine enochian magic with shamanic technics. Some results of my researches are shown on this pages. I must emphasize again that these materials are for experienced shamans. I cannot prevent would-be magicians and wannabe-shamans reading these pages. For beginners I recommend to read the articles about enochian shamanism and surf to other places, less dangerous to your health. Perhaps you can find some valuable hints for your own path. The practitioners which are urging to test these materials will recognize soon the limits of human abilities and thus progressing far on their own path of life. Always ask your (spiritual) teachers about the ways of dealing with such powers. I did. The spirits persuaded me to publish these informations on the web.
