143. Shaman's Song
This page is in honor of the shamanic tradition which I believe underlies all human religions and belief systems, as shamanism has been practiced on every inhabited continent in the world since paleolithic times.
http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/6923/
Singing the Shaman's Song
At that moment when the shaman song emerges, when the sacred breath rises up from the depths of the heart, the center is found, and the source of all that is divine has been tapped.
from Joan Halifax, Shamanic Voices
Song can be a salve, a celebration, a lamentation, a bridge to other worlds.
From the earliest times, humans have known that song, and its accompanying poetry, could take us out of our ego selves and transport us into the hidden, magical realms where spirits dwell. Along with the drum and the rattle, the shaman's song allows us to transcend this physical world and re-member again our connection to the source, to experience again the unity of the universe. This page is in honor of the shamanic tradition which I believe underlies all human religions and belief systems, as shamanism has been practiced on every inhabited continent in the world since paleolithic times. Since antiquity, shamans have been those individuals gifted with the ability to access the hidden realities and to dialogue with spiritual representatives of the universe for the purposes of healing and divination. Shamans also believe strongly in the interconnectedness of all things; therefore, everything that existsincluding rocks, tree, animals, the elementsis alive and imbued with spirit and is capable of being communicated with; even their songs can be learned and sung. In tribal cultures, shamans are the healers, the medicine people, or simply, "those who know," those who learn from both the natural and the spiritual worlds.

Homepage of a WebRing focusing on shamanism and animal spirituality. Includes membership details and application link.
http://www.nanopardus.freeserve.co.uk/tbwwr
-Founded: 02/14/1998-
Greetings Traveler from Afar,
You have reached the official home page of The Beast Within - A Spiritual Web Ring . This web ring is dedicated to honor animal spirit guardians and shapeshifters. Our guardians have many names, such as animal familiars, spirit helpers, spirit guardians, totem animals, or power animals. The name isn't really that important. They are our protectors, guardians, teachers, mentors, and friends. They help us overcome difficult tasks in our daily lives, and help us grow spiritually. All we have to do is invite them into our lives, and ask for their help. Are you aware of your guardian? Do you believe in the possibility of shapeshifting? Are you a shapeshifter? The ability to shapeshift is innate to all of us, all we have to do is rediscover this long forgotten art of personal and global change. The only true change is a shapeshift, everything less will simply fail. Every single one of us shapeshifts in one form or another, sometimes without even realizing it. We are many, and we are all around you. :) TBWWR is dedicated to bring people from all walks of life, from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, with different philosophies, outlooks on life, and belief-systems together to share their views, dreams, experiences, poetry, art, and knowledge with one another. The Spirit World doesn't have such limits or prejudices, and why should we even be concerned about them? After all, are we not the same? Aren't we connected to each other, no matter who we are or what our appearance happens to be? Energy is everything, everything is energy. The emphasis lies within our spirtuality, with the Spirit of the animal, our Guardian and Protector, the Beast Within. The more we learn from our teachers the stronger we grow spiritually, and the happier and more fulfilled we are.

The Haida and their neighbours held in common a set of beliefs about the way the human world interacted with the natural and supernatural worlds, though the Haida also had some profound differences in outlook. The shared concepts centred around curing the sick, ensuring the supply of fish and game, and controlling or at least influencing the weather. Among the ranks of shaman were specialists whose powers were particularly effective within a selected range of tasks such as securing the outcome of major enterprises like trading expeditions or warfare. Both genders could be shaman, but more often it was men who chose the calling. Women shaman focussed more on curing illnesses and the difficulties of childbirth and, in rare cases, on power over animals and fish. Although shaman could come from any rank except slaves, they were usually members of high-ranking families, often even the brother of a chief; thus, together they combined both secular and supernatural control at the head of a lineage.

  • Meetings are now once a month, on the second Sunday. Time is extended one hour; 6 to 9 instead of 6 to 8. Participants should already have some Shamanic journeying experience
Time: 6:00 - 9:00 PM The second Sunday of every month. Please come promptly, the outside door is locked at 6:00 PM. Place: 301 South Bedford Street, at the Tai Chi Center.
Directions: S. Bedford empties into North Shore Drive, at the point where North Shore meets John Nolen Drive. North Shore turns into Regent Street when it crosses West Washington Ave. The Tai Chi Center is a large brick buiding at the corner of S. Bedford and North Shore Drive. It has a large painted sign on its side, advertising a long-departed tentmaking company. The door is always locked, but someone usually opens it about 5:45. If it's not open by then, just wait. Someone will be along. The door is locked shortly after six, so it will be difficult to get in if you arrive late. http://nas.ucdavis.edu/Forbes/shamanism.html
Native Intelligence: a column by Jack D. Forbes Native American Studies University of California, Davis This column's focus: Shamanism, New and Old At least until recently, the word "shaman" was one of those terms which would lead most indigenous people to figuratively "reach for their shields" and assume a defensive posture. "Shaman" has been pretty much of a dividing line word: those who use it are non-Native and/or anthropological, or are ignorant of Native Americans' feelings. Indigenous people refer to their own holy people and curers by other terms such as doctor, medicine person, spiritual leader, elder, herbalist or diagnostician, recognizing a wide variety of callings and skills. Of course, before "shaman" became popular in the anthropological literature, indigenous healers and religious persons were often referred to as "witch doctors," "sorcerers" or other derogatory terms, words still used reportedly in right-wing Christian missionary propaganda. But "shaman" is not an innocent term either, because it rises out of a clear misunderstanding of, and denigration of, non-European cultures.

http://www.fote.org/religion/shaman.htm
Shamanism
The word "shaman" is thought to have originated in Russia, meaning "one who affects the soul" . There are many variations of the definition of shaman depending on what source you read from. Shamanism is humanity's oldest form of relationship to Spirit. As such, it is the underpinning beneath all religion. But shamanism is not a religion. It is a complex set of practices, beliefs, values and behaviors that enable the practicioner to elicit a shift from ordinary consiousness into a trance state with a specific goal in mind, such as for healing, obtaining information, power, vision, divination, contacting the spirit of the deceased, soul retrieval or guidance for right action. Shamanic work is done with the aid of a helping ally of some sorts that the shaman has befriended. They work together as a cooperative team, with the ally being an intermediary between different levels of reality and the shaman, an engineer of altering states of consciousness. A vitally important aspect of the practice of shamanism is understanding right relationship with power, and the acts and implements of power, such as sage, ceder, feathers, the drum, ceremony, disincarnate spirits, totem animals and allies. Exploration of right relationship also intails indepth ecopsychological, attitudinal healing along with active, social justice involvement in issues effecting the rights of indigenous people in today's world.
