72: Shamanism
From New Age sweat lodges to Soviet Siberia, shamanic spirit mediums have been construed as everything from healers to magistrates to visionaries to political subversives. This course explores anthropological literature on shamanism in the United States, Russia, and South America in order to ask ourselves how we constitute and appropriate the exotic.

Welcome to EarthPath
Dedicated to those whose spirituality honors and protects our Mother Earth and all her inhabitants.
We are all part of the Whole. Removing even the smallest of us leaves a hole in the Web.
EarthPath's mission is to provide educational information to those interested in or dedicated to Earth-centered spirituality. The curriculum on this site is designed to give the student the materials needed to become knowledgeable in general Earth-centered shamanic spirituality. EarthPath is a system, not a Tradition. Rather than teaching any specific spiritual tradition, EarthPath assists the student in identifying one's personal spiritual path and encourages the student to pursue that path. Should the student become interested in being ordained into a ministerial position within the EarthPath System, completing the entire curriculum, will prepare the student for that ordination. The complete course is extensive and takes three to five years to complete, depending upon the student. Progression is always determined on an individual basis. For those students who have been studying either as a solitary or under the tutelage of another teacher or tradition, please email WindRider to work out a means of determining where EarthPath study should begin.

shaman "The tragedy of our cultural situation is that we have no shamanic tradition. Shamanism is primarily techniques, not ritual. It is a set of techniques that have been worked out over millenia that make it possible, though perhaps not for everyone, to explore these areas. People of predilection are noticed and encouraged. " "In archaic societies where shamanism is a thriving institution, the signs are fairly easy to recognize: oddness or uniqueness in an individual. Epilepsy is often a signature in preliterate societies, or survival of an unusual ordeal in an unexpected way. For instance, people who are struck by lightning and live are thought to make excellent shamans. People who nearly die of a disease and fight their way back to health after weeks and weeks in an indeterminate zone are thought to have strength and soul. Among aspiring shamans there must be some sign of inner strength or a hypersensitivity to

86. Haines Brown, Korean Shamanism
A concise historical introduction by Haines Brown.
http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/55a/092.html
Korean Shamanism
It might be argued that shamanism represents the original human religion, for archaeologists have adventurously inferred evidence of shamanism among homo sapiens. Its broad distribution over the world also suggests that in some ways shamanism is the quintessence of human religiosity. It remains important today, less often explicitly (as in Haiti) than implicitly (as in Pentecostal or Full Gospel Protestantism). A shaman - a word of Siberian origin - is a person who mediates the relation between the natural world and an animated supernatural world (spirits) for the purpose of gaining some control over or knowledge of natural events. The practice is symptomatic of circumstances in which people either had too little power to change their fate (as in early societies) or whose personal power is insufficient in a world that seems overwhelming or threatening (as under modern capitalism). To achieve a connection with a power that is supernatural, the shaman is mounted or taken over by a spirit after having liberated his or her mind from natural limitation. This liberating process is often achieved by drugs such as tobacco (once known as "sot-weed" for this reason) or soma, spinning or dancing, drumming or singing of deep tones. The word shaman is not only originally Siberian, but Northeast Asia seems to have been a major center of later diffusions of the religion into the Americas (Native American shamanism) and later throughout Eurasia (as in early Southeast Asia and Germanic Europe). Because the deepest roots of Korean civilization lay in the Altaic region of Northeast Asia, it is not surprising that shamanism had an important role in Korean culture, as it also does in the Tibetan. When a new Tungusic people called the Yamacek entered the Korean Peninsula in the beginning of the first millennium B.C., they introduced a profoundly shamanistic culture.

AFRO-CARIBBEAN SHAMANISM

Obeah, as practiced in Jamaica and the Caribbean, takes the USE OF and KNOWLEDGE OF ancient occult powers orginally handed down over the centuries by word of mouth from the remnants of a once very powerful and celebrated religious order in remote ages, now lost in the mist of time, and combines it with Shamanism - as practiced mostly by tribal people who spoke Ashanti from West Africa - Sorcery, Voudon (Voodoo), and witchcraft. It is a dying breed shrouded in secrecy known and practiced only by a select few. Even fewer ever truly enter the ranks of Obeah and able to successfully wield its will and awesome scope unscathed. An Obeahman can use ANY system and fuel it with the power of Obeah without the danger of disrespect FOR the gods, but, depending on circumstances, not necessarily without repercussions FROM the gods and the natural order of things. Obeah is potent, compelling and in the wrong hands, both deadly and dangerous. It's secret lies in its POWER . Even White Light Shields can and do weaken, collapse, or be rendered impotent, buckling under to another's stronger power when pitted against each other in tests of strength.

Comprehending Shamanism
By Dr. Thomas Pinkson and adapted here from his Nierica Site with his kind permission.
S hamanism is humanity's oldest form of relationship to Spirit. As such, it is the underpinning beneath all religion. But shamanism is not a religion. It is a complex set of practices, beliefs, values and behaviors that enable the practicioner to elicit a shift from ordinary consiousness into a trance state with a specific goal in mind, such as for healing, obtaining information, power, vision, divination, contacting the spirit of the deceased, soul retrieval or guidance for right action. Shamanic work is done with the aid of a helping ally of some sorts that the shaman has befriended. They work together as a cooperative team, with the ally being an intermediary between different levels of reality and the shaman, an engineer of altering states of consciousness. A vitally important aspect of the practice of shamanism is understanding right relationship with power, and the acts and implements of power, such as sage, ceder, feathers, the drum, ceremony, disincarnate spirits, totem animals and allies. Exploration of right relationship also intails indepth ecopsychological, attitudinal healing along with active, social justice involvement in issues effecting the rights of indigenous people in today's world. See Flowers of Wiricuta for further discussion of this vital area of concern.

shamanism
Shamanism is an ancient religion that includes belief in animism , deities, and demons. The shaman, or priest, is believed to have special powers that allow him to communicate with ancestral spirits, the gods, or their evil counterparts. Shamanism is still practiced by indigenous peoples in Siberia The term "shaman" has come to refer to any priest or priestess who uses magic to heal the sick or communicate with spirits. Shamans are thought to possess magical powers and have esoteric knowledge, especially regarding the healing powers of certain plants. Shamanic healing centers, books, and programs are common New Age developments, growing in proportion to the complexity and indifference towards individuals of the modern world. For some people, shamanism is a window to a glorious, if illusory, past, when humans lived in harmony with nature and with each other. Shamanism offers not only an alternative medicine , but an alternative reality.

Northern European Shamanism: A Preliminary Reconstruction
ici . (It's got cool pictures, too! ;) Shamanism has come to be associated almost exclusively, in American popular thinking, with the aboriginal inhabitants of the Americas. This not only inaccurately reflects the extent of shamanism's practice (it is found from Australia to the Arctic) but also, sadly, contributes to a neglect by those of European descent of the shamanic practices of their own ancestors. One cause of this neglect has been the carefully fostered image of Europe as the wellspring of Western Civilization, by which tribal origins and traditional life are often glossed over. However, I was delighted to discover, when I examined ancient sources, that I did not need to borrow from other traditions; it is clear that tribal Europe had as strong a shamanic tradition as, for example, any of the American Indian tribes. It is fitting that other people, too, of European descent examine this European Shamanic tradition; it is a rightful part of our heritage so there need be no accusations of theft or exploitation, and its images and symbols ring more truly in our collective unconscious than those of other cultures. This is a survey of a few shamanic elements that occur within Western shamanic traditions, obscured as they are by time and cultural discontinuity. I will be using material from many Northern European cultures, on the assumption that each one may have retained some element that the others have lost. The similarities between them all have convinced me that there actually was, once, a unified European system, and Hilda R. Ellis Davidson, in
