About Shamanism
The Irish Centre for Shamanic Studies was set up by Martin Duffy to promote and research traditional and contemporary Shamanism Shamanism is an ancient spiritual system dating back over 50,000 years. This tradition forms the roots of all healing and spiritual models. We can all trace our shamanic ancestry back through time, whether it be through Celtic, European, American or Aboriginal origins. A Shaman is an individual who can through various techniques such as drumming, dancing and dreaming to change their sate of consciousness and journey outside time, or ordinary reality, to the non ordinary realms of magic and mystery. The Shaman travels beyond the "matrix" of ordinary reality to contact the spirit world to seek healing, knowledge and power to help the individual and the community. The Shaman uses ecstatic techniques to enter the shamanic state of consciousness (SSC) travel out of the body, make contact with spirit guides and power animals and therefore effect changes in ordinary reality. Working closely with nature and the elemental forces is also a very important aspect of the Shaman's role.

Oh how the days and months fly! Mid-March already, can you believe it? I know it's been a LONG time since my last post, I just haven't felt inclined to write anything, but was suddeny kicked back into action. The newest post is a little blurb on my view of the world and it's belief structure, it's a little philosophical so you'll have to pardon me for being a little intense. Anyway, there should be another post soon, I'm working on writing up meditation techniques. But for now, this'll havta do ;-) Jan 5, 2001 Welcome to the new year and the new millenium! The turning of this past calender is a reminder to us all that we control our future, that no matter what the past has held, we lead ouselves into the new millenium with hope and promise. In this light, I wish to present to you a tale sent to me by one of our clan sisters. It is, of course, with the other links at the bottom of the page, and if I may say so, a definite must read!!!! However, it is not enough to merely recognize the places and beings of supernatural world. To gain full control over the vision, it must be described in words - to sing or retell it. For singing or retelling one's experiences means giving a more traditional form to an individual experience. Individuals who are acquainted since early childhood with shamanic tradition have naturally more necessary knowledge for expressing in words their visions than other people. It is during the initiation period that the devotee acquires most of his songs - descriptions of helping spirits and journeys. A son often applies the melodies of his father's or grandfather's shaman songs.
An active traditionary control over shaman visions continues after the initiation period is over. In case of an experienced shaman, this is expressed by guessing or so-called 'quest for the right path' taking place during rituals. With the help of such guessing untypical or inappropriate elements are eliminated from the shaman actions. Advice sought by the shamans from people who have a good knowledge of the tradition in a difficult situation is also a part of the traditionary control. Often, an experienced shaman has to continue recognizing and naming objects and beings of the supernatural world during the rites. For example, Tubyaku Kosterkin, a Nganasan shaman, had three helping spirits called

He taught Igor, but he was too young. Now I can only perform some father's songs I still remember." Photo (61K) by T. Ojamaa 1990.

Shamanism in Korea
by Lee Chang Sun
Korea, like other Asian people, maintain ancient traditions such as KUT, exorcising ceremonies, which resemble those of the Nothern American medicine man or African witch doctor. These practices have not been fully institutionalized into a religion in the way Shintoism has been in Japen. However, shamanism has been kept very alive in Korea.
TWO KINDS OF SHAMAN
Korean shamans can be roughly divided into two types: possessed, or charismatic shamans and hereditary shamans. The former, called NAERIM MUDANG, are typically found in the northern half of the Korean peninsula. After suffering from SINBYONG, an illness which is generally interpreted as a sign of a shamistic calling, a potential NAERIM MUDANG apprentices herself to an established shaman from she acquires the knowledge and skills appropriate to her new occupation. The two Woman establish a 'spirit mother'-'spirit daughter' relationship, the spirit mother later conducting the initiation rite which transforms her apprentice into a full-fledged shaman. In the course of their rites, these shamans not only become possessed and experience ecstatic trance states themselves but may also induce their clients to do the same. The hereditary shamans, called TANGOL MUDANG, are found in the southern half of the Korean peninsula. They are recruited not through possession sickness but simply by being born into a shaman's family. Though this type of shaman does not undergo trance possessed and herself, she may cause of a rite.

75. O.A.K.: HOW THE BRAIN ‘CREATES’ GOD
Broadranging overview by Iona Miller, touching on archetypes, NDEs, drugs, trances, TMS, and shamanism.

The Emerging Science of Neurotheology Iona Miller , Asklepia Foundation, 2003 Albert Einstein
The Great Unknown Imagine one of our ancient ancestors, suddenly stricken by illness or a near-fatal accident. Hovering near the brink of death, an ordinary person suddenly finds him or herself locked in an immersive visionary experience of shadowy figures, muted voices and blinding luminescence. The brain is hard-wired for mystical experiences to modify the threat of our hostile existential reality (Alper). Metaphysical explanations developed for the essentially unknowable, for sudden and irresistible seizures of ecstasy. Some of these accounts were more sophisticated than others depending on their cultural background, but all shared a common core by defining the mystery of the relationship between mankind and the Unknown. It might be called a peak experience, spirit possession, epiphany, religious rapture, nirvana, satori, shaktiput, clear light, or illumination. The difference is only one of degrees of absorption, of fulfillment. The god-experience is a process, a subjective perception, rather than an objectively provable reality. Distractions cease, replaced by the direct impact of oceanic expansion, sudden insight, childlike wonder, ecstatic exaltation above bodily and personal existence, dissolution in a timeless moment, fusion, gnosis.

Shamanism Among the Peoples of Western and Eastern Siberia
Karina Solovyova Russian Museum of Ethnography Koryak group with a drum, 1915. S hamans played an important role in the lives of their tribal members and were protectors and intermediaries between humans and spirits. The training and development of future shamans required several years. As soon as the clan acknowledged a candidate for shaman and the candidate's right to be a shaman, the ritual of consecration occurred. Ritual actions were also obligatory when the shaman received each special object. The baton was one of the major shamanic ritual artifacts for the Evenks, Sel'kups, Nenets, and Kets, and it had many symbolic functions. It was used as a striking instrument, and it also represented a special spirit helper of the shaman for the Evenks and Kets. It was also pogonyalka ghis , literally means "talking" or the "object for telling the future," and this emphasized another function. The Evenks used the baton to forecast the future regarding the offspring of the reindeer herd or the loss and the fate of people. The shaman threw the baton towards the interested person, and the future was determined by how it would fall. Some batons of Sel'kup shamans had a cavity with stones inside and were used as rattles instead of as drumsticks. The Sel'kups also used the baton to cure the sick. By touching the place of pain with the baton, the shaman extracted the cause of the disease (the evil spirit), or he or she placed the sought-after soul of the sick person on the end of the handle and then back into the person.

Life consulting is a mentoring program for adults that can assist with personal growth and spiritual well being. I am honored to walk with you for a time. I encourage you to step stronger on your path and look deeper into self as you continue on the road of enlightenment. A spiritual mentor is an ordinary person willing to enter a guiding relationship with another individual with the purpose of exploring the inner self and living a more spirituality enhanced life. The mentor's main focus is on ways to support the individual experiences of the client. Mentors can offer expanded awareness through study and techniques such as journal keeping, meditation, shamanic journey, dream interpretation, and personal growth courses and individual teachings. Perhaps you have awakened to new things in life and are more aware of the sacred around you. This can create a thirst to understand the spiritual nature of the experiences you are having. It also can bring about a need for deeper communication between yourself and Spirit/God. Whether you are new to the path or an experienced traveler, spiritual mentoring can help you find the focus you need to walk in balance. Spirit And Sky
