Home Page Articles Drum Circles Workshops ... I Ching Reading Welcome. My name is Michael Drake. I am a writer, rhythmist, and ceremonial drummer of Cherokee descent. I began my journey into rhythm by studying with Mongolian shaman Jade Wah'oo Grigori . Jade's ancient knowledge of drumming and healing rhythms was most influential in putting together my first book, The Shamanic Drum: A Guide to Sacred Drumming . I had a deep respect for the powerful rhythms and drum ways of Jade's tradition, but I had to follow my own path of rhythm. Though Jade was my mentor, the drum became the guiding force in my life. It led me to explore the rhythms of many of the world's shamanic traditions. Inspired by my studies, research, and experiences, I founded Talking Drum Publications in 1991 in order to publish and disseminate information related to shamanic drumming. Estimated to be between 20,000 and 30,000 years old, shamanic drumming is a time-honored method of healing and helping others. Practiced in diverse cultures around the planet, this technique is strikingly similar the world over. Shamanic drumming uses a single, repetitive rhythm played at a tempo of some three to four beats per second. Although sounding quite simple and redundant, the unique connection between the drum and the shaman gives this drumming great power, richness, and depth. Through the many tones, pitches, and harmonics of the drum, the shaman communes with the subtle and normally unseen energies of the spirit world. By changing and listening to the frequencies and overtones of the drum, the shaman is able to send messages to

Shamanism General-Overview
Summary: This FAQ contains a general overview on shamanism. It should be read by anyone interested in understanding the what is meant by shamanism and what differentiates shamanism form other forms of ecstatic experience. Archive-name: shamanism-overview
Last-modified: 3 Nov 1995, Version: 1.7
hypertexture= deoxy.org NOTE: The following general overview of shamanism is not intended to be the last word or the definitive work on this subject. Rather it is, as its title implies, intended to provide the participant or reader with a set of guidelines that will familiarize them with the general use of the terms shamanism , shaman and shamanic in the trends, study and practice of historic, traditional and contemporary shamanic experience. The word shaman comes to English from the Tungus language via Russian. Among the Tungus of Siberia it is both a noun and a verb. While the Tungus have no word for shamanism, it has come into usage by anthropologists, historians of religion and others in contemporary society to designate the experience and the practices of the shaman. Its usage has grown to include similar experiences and practices in cultures outside of the original Siberian cultures from which the term shaman originated. Thus shamanism is not the name of a religion or group of religions. Particular attention should be paid to the use of qualifying words such a

http://www.shamanism.com/huichol.html
ABOUT US Huichol Indians The Huichol Indians are a small tribe of approximately 15,000 living in central Mexico near Ixtlan in the Sierra Madre Mountains. They are said to be the last tribe in North America to have maintained their pre-Columbian traditions. Huichol shamans and healers practice today as they have for generations. In part, their survival is due to the focus of their traditions. They have no history of war. Rather than training for war, they train their hearts to open to the healing powers of love and to the celebrations of life through the seasons. Because of this, they are famous for their strong ceremonial tradition, rich mythology and incredible visionary artwork. Primarily an agricultural people, the Huichols are dependent upon corn, planting their fields along the steep slopes of their mountain homeland. Corn is life for the Huichol Indians. The yearly cycle of preparing the fields, planting, growing, and harvesting the corn is surrounded by religious ceremony, as is all of Huichol life. Huichol life is a continuous cycle of ritual and devotional exercises designed to help them stay connected to the Ancient Ones-Tate Wari (Grandfather Fire), Takutsi Nakawey (Grandmother Growth), Kauyumari (our brother, the Deer Spirit), and Tatei Yurianaka (Mother Earth), among others. The Huichols say that during ceremony, they are inviting these spirits to come into the circle of life to be with them- to help empower them and their families, and to help the universe stay in balance.

http://www.crystalinks.com/shamanism.html
A shaman is a medicine man or woman. Shaman are spiritual beings with the ability to heal, work with energies and 'see' visions.
The essential characteristics of shaman are mastery of energy and fire as a medium of transformation. Shamanism is a range of traditional beliefs and practices that involve the ability to diagnose, cure, and sometimes cause human suffering by traversing the axis mundi and forming a special relationship with, or gaining control over, spirits. Shamans have been credited with the ability to control the weather, divination, the interpretation of dreams, astral projection, and traveling to upper and lower worlds. Shamanistic traditions have existed throughout the world since prehistoric times. Shamanism is based on the premise that the visible world is pervaded by invisible forces or spirits that affect the lives of the living. In contrast to animism and animatism, which any and usually all members of a society practice, shamanism requires specialized knowledge or abilities. Shamans are not, however, organized into full-time ritual or spiritual associations, as are priests. Etymology The word shaman originated among the Siberian Tungus (Evenks) and literally means he (or she) who knows; the belief that the word may be derived from Sanskrit is perhaps due to a confusion of the words 'shamanism' and 'shramanism', from the sanskrit shramana, Pali and Prakrit samana; but the samanas were ascetics, not shamans.

35. Aziz Shamanism Website

http://www.azizshamanism.com/
About Aziz Shamanism Peter Aziz trained in shamanism for 35 years, and then in a more recent spiritual journey he was taken into Shambhala, where he was selected for higher work; to be a direct channel for God/Goddess/all that is. Since then, his work has transcended traditional shamanic technique, replacing it with a system that is more powerful and divine. He has been featured in local newspapers for getting a crippled boy walking, and has successfully healed a number of cancers and other serious conditions. He has healed broken bones within a few hours, and already empowered his students to produce equally powerful healing. He also produces great spiritual transformation in his clients. His main guide is Kali, the destroyer of illusion to produce fast spiritual growth. One of his new spiritual gifts is the ability to materialise gifts from the spirit world. These were at first Dragon Pearls and items from the faerie realm, but this gift too has evolved, so he now materialises gifts directly from the gods, such as Crystal Yantras. He gives individual healing, and runs workshops, which are continuously evolving.

Back to main page Summary of Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy (Mircea Eliade, 1964; tr. Willard Trask)
Summary of Chapters I-II by S. Leggatt, 7.16.97 I. General Considerations. Recruiting Methods. Shamanism and Mystical Vocation. Approaches Eliade begins by defining his terms. Shaman will not be used to refer simply to any medicine man, fakir, or magician, but only to members of that subset of those more general classes which share a sufficient number of characteristics with the paradigmatic case of shamanism, the Siberian/Central Asian. Briefly, shamans of this type cure, they escort the souls of the dead, they fly, they control fire, but by far the most important, they employ techniques of ecstasy; that is to say, they leave their bodies. Each of these elements will be elaborated upon later. Eliade notes that shamanism most frequently coexists with other magico-religious belief systems, rather than assimilating or being assimilated by them. It is in part for this reason that a strict definition of shamanism is useful, in order to differentiate between groups that might otherwise mistakenly be categorized together. Interestingly, we will find that belief systems all over the world share a large number of the elements of shamanism with the paradigmatic case, despite having no geographical or cultural point of contact with Siberia or Central Asia. In fact, although "shamanism dominates the religious life of Central and North Asia, it is nevertheless not
