Background: The SDA church has always taken a special interest in health concerns: diet, smoking, alcohol consumption, etc. They are strong supporters of the principle of separation of church and state. They also promote religious liberty, and publish a periodical called Liberty The Church has about 11 million members worldwide, with a growth rate of about 7%. They have 825 thousand members and 4,348 churches in the US. They have about 52 thousand members in Canada. Theologically, they are very conservative. One main difference between the SDA church and a typical Evangelical church is that the SDA's hold religious services on the Sabbath (Saturday). Bulletin Board Minnesota Conference News Maplewood Academy Board Announces A New Principal On Thursday, June 2, 2005, the Maplewood Academy Board and the search committee met and extended an invitation to Steve Sherman to be the new Principal of the academy. After a telephone conversation with his family, Steve has accepted the offer to join our team. Steve Sherman grew up in Ohio in the home of a pastor. He graduated from Spring Valley Academy and then went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts and a Master's degree from Andrews University. For the past 16 years Steve has served at a private English school in Puerto Rico that has an enrollment of over 1500 students. Steve has served in various roles from curriculum coordinator, teacher, Dean of Students, and Principal. He also has taught classes at the university in World Religions, Ethics, and Political Philosophy. Steve enjoys public speaking, teaching Sabbath School, doing radio broadcasts, and public relations. In his free time he likes to golf and play tennis. He is married to Nadine, a native from Puerto Rico. Nadine has a Master's degree in Music from the Juliard School of Music in New York.
