The Scandal of Scientology
(1971) balanced by glowing testimonials written by and for Scientologists. Impartial treatments by outsiders have been rare, making this slim but informative volume all the more welcome. Melton (director of the Institute for the Study of American Religion in Santa Barbara, Calif., and author of the Encyclopedia of American Religions ), begins his study with a history of Lafayette Ron Hubbard, a successful Hollywood screenwriter in the 1930s who also churned out voluminous pulp fiction under various pen names. In 1950 Hubbard published his seminal work Dianetics
Journal of Church and State
, Derek H. Davis
This short book is the first in a series of general introductions to new religions offered by the Center for Studies on New Religions. Future titles will examine Baha'i, Sokka Gakkai, Unificationism, the Family, and other religions new on the landscape.
Gordon Melton needs no introduction. He is among the foremost experts on new and nonconventional religions. Few scholars understand Scientology better than Melton, and his expertise is evident in this crisp, cogent study of one of the world's fastest growing religions.

Lisa McPherson Deaths in Scientology's Fort Harrison Hotel Flag is the abbreviation of Flag Land Base, Scientology's presence in Clearwater. The first building they bought was the 272-room Fort Harrison hotel. Lisa McPherson (36)
Room 174?
On December 5, 1995, Lisa McPherson died. Scientology had held her against her will for 17 days. During that time, she tried to leave, became violent, and refused to eat. At the time of her death, she had bruises and abrasions on her body, and she had lost over 30 pounds in just 17 days.
Heribert Pfaff (31)
Room 758
According to the records, Heribert P. died august 28, 1988, during the night from a heavy epileptic attack. He hit his head on the night table. The scientology doctor reports that he prescribed vitamins for his patient -dispite regular attacks- in stead of treating him with proper medication. Such medication was indeed not detected in his blood during the post-mortem examination.
Josephus Havenith (45)
Room 771
An autopsy report lists his death as "probable drowning" but notes that his head was not under water. He died in February 1980 at the Scientology Fort Harrison Hotel in a bathtub filled with water so hot it had burned his skin off. Unknown

By THOMAS C. TOBIN LEARWATER A new private school using educational concepts promoted by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard is scheduled to open today downtown. Clearwater Academy International, at Drew Street and Myrtle Avenue, will have an enrollment of 120 students from pre-kindergarten through the 12th grade, said executive director Pam Chipman. A new $1.5-million facility now holds the combined enrollment and resources of three smaller schools that merged last year A to Be School, Jefferson Academy and Renaissance Academy. A to Be School, the most dominant of the three, started in 1990 with 12 students in a small building on Myrtle Avenue, Chipman said. It later moved to a storefront on Cleveland Street, then to a Franklin Street building owned by the Church of Scientology 7nd finally to a small office building farther east at 814 Franklin St. In 1994, the school bought the land at Myrtle and Drew for the new school, which took about seven months to construct.

Scientology Handbook
The Scientology religion contains workable answers to the problems people face in their lives. The subject matter of Scientology is all life. It contains practical means through which predictable improvement can be obtained in any area to which it is applied. Scientology recognizes that man is not just so many vials of chemicals fortuitously combined into a remarkable stimulus-response machine. Scientology views man as a spiritual being with native capabilities which can be improved far beyond what is generally believed possible. In fact, it has been demonstrated that man deteriorates to the degree that he denies his spiritual nature and ceases to live with moral values, such as trust, honesty, integrity and other sometimes intangible characteristics. By seeing man as essentially spiritual, Scientology follows in the traditional view of man and his relationship to the universe. Scientology, however, is unique in that it contains practical means of enabling man to resolve his material concerns and so come to achieve his spiritual aspirations. In this regard Scientology is an improvement over any earlier practice in terms of what it can actually do to help man. The problems of drugs education morals relationships ... trust and others contain solutions in Scientology which do not beget further problems.

What is Scientology? What is Dianetics? L. Ron Hubbard ... Scientology: A New Slant On Life
Welcome to the Church of Scientology Los Angeles
For nearly 50 years, churches of Scientology and their members have involved themselves in actively solving the problems of society. Today, we can look back proudly at the past five decades. The Scientology religion now encompasses more than 3,200 churches, missions and groups in 154 countries, helping millions around the world. When it opened its doors on February 18, 1954, the Church of Scientology in Los Angeles began as a thinly-staffed group who, nevertheless, wanted to deliver life-changing technology to others and help him achieve the goal of a new civilization. As word about the miracle results of technology spread, and as his organizational policy was issued and implemented, the Los Angeles church grew. It moved to larger and larger facilities to accommodate its growing congregation.

"Religious Freedom and the New Millenium"
Washington DC, April 17-19, 1998 I refer to Freedom for Religions in Germany as FRG. You may notice the pun as the former acronym of the Federal Republic of Germany. FRG was formed to address the serious religious freedom abuses being suffered by minority religions at the hands of German officials. It was originally conceived by the Human Rights Department of the Church of Scientology International and has been joined by members of over 10 religious faiths, including Sikh, Hindu, Jewish, Unificationist, Protestant, and Buddhist. The purpose of FRG is to bring the attention of world institutions to the abuses of religious freedom in modern-day Germany; to give small minority religions a voice, initiate fact-finding missions, expose abuses, issue reports, seek dialogue and resolution of these abuses, and encourage various government bodies to assist in bringing resolution to these problems. One of the largest obstacles that religious freedom faces in Germany is the German government’s denial that there is any religious discrimination. This statement is from the vice-chancellor in the Foreign Ministry, Klaus Kinkle: “If the German government continues to deny this, it makes it patently impossible to handle the situation and more lives become ruined while the German government debates its own integrity. That integrity is in serious doubt to the rest of the international community. Germany is a signatory to a number of international treaties and accords, which guarantee religious freedom of belief and association to the citizens of Germany. Among these are the

Conference on
"Religious Freedom in Latin America and the New Millennium"
October 10-12, 1998, Sheraton Mofarrej Hotel, Sao Paolo, Brazil I have to tell you just a little bit about the discrimination against our church over the years. The religion of Scientology was founded by humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard in the early 1950s. We now have about eight million members around the world and churches and missions in about 100 countries. As a new religion, we have experienced a lot of abuse and discrimination over the years from those who are anti-religious and those that have originated and passed false information in an effort to suppress our religion. The discrimination has come in various forms. In the United States it has come from the government agencies that have conducted raids upon our church and spread false information. As a result, our members from foreign countries were not allowed to enter the United States during the 1970s. This was greatly relieved in 1993 when the Internal Revenue Service formally recognized our church as a religion and we became tax exempt. In England in the 1960s, all foreign Scientologists attempting to enter that country were banned. Fortunately the ban was lifted several years later. In Australia, Scientology was banned from one of the states. In 1983, the Supreme Court of Australia recognized not only the Church of Scientology , but also 500 other religions in that country.
