The Organization of Scientology
The Structure of the Church
What is now the Church of Scientology began as small groups of people gathered to do Dianetics counseling. To this day, the growing edge of Scientology is still found in small Dianetic counseling groups and missions where field auditors introduce people to Scientology and offer basic counseling. Missions, more formally organized than the counseling groups, assist people who are ready to start up the bridge and encourage them to continue their efforts at the nearest local Church of Scientology. Where no groups or missions are readily available, individual field auditors may operate alone. The church supports its field auditors directly through the International Hubbard Ecclesiastical League of Pastors (IHELP), and the missions through Scientology Missions International Local churches are prepared to assist members with both the counseling ( auditing ) and class work that will allow them to reach the state of Clear . They are also the major focus of the church's interaction with the community as they motivate members to become involved in the church's

Ron Hubbard , and participating in Scientology spiritual counseling . Scientology services increase spiritual awareness, personal freedom and ability, and help the individual overcome unwanted conditions in life. In training, as in counseling, the individual progresses at his or her own rate of speed; you may enroll on a course at any time. Mr. Hubbard even researched and discovered why some people have difficulty learning, so there are no barriers to your progress. Scientology is the result of more than half a century of research into the human spirit, the mind and life. It is the synthesis of 50,000 years of thinking men combined with new methods of application. Scientologists come from all parts of the world, all walks of life , and have tremendously varied interests and professions. But they share certain things in common. Scientologists are 100% drug-free . They are each seeking to improve conditions in their lives. They work to increase their spiritual awareness and ability and to help their friends, families and communities. Helping others is one of the most

    SCIENTOLOGY v. the INTERNET
By Jim Lippard and Jeff Jacobsen
The power to control the dissemination of information is the power to influence the beliefs and actions of human beings. Nothing has transformed civilization in such dramatic and unforeseen ways as the development of information technology which affects that power. The printing press, the telegraph, the telephone, radio, and television have altered societies by increasing the speed of communication, the quantity of information that can be communicated, and the potential number of recipients of any message. As each new technology becomes cheaper to use, the ability of individuals to create and spread their own messages is enhanced, and control over the flow of knowledge becomes decentralized. Institutions and individuals that require the ability to control information to retain power have found themselves ousted as technologies have undermined that ability. Falling into the last category is the Church of Scientology (COS), which has seen texts of secret Scientology teachings, affidavits and declarations from court cases, and even entire books by Scientology critics, made publicly (and anonymously) available on both the Internet and the Usenet, a collection of thousands of public discussion forums known as newsgroups. Rather than answering the criticism, Scientologists have responded in their standard manner-by attacking their critics with confrontation and litigation. This article is a summary of recent events in what began as the battle between Scientology and its critics and, because of these tactics, is now the battle between Scientology and the Internet.

    IS SCIENTOLOGY A RELIGION?

Introduction You can find many critics views of the Scientology religion on the
Internet if you search the word Scientology Church of Scientology or
Scientologists. Some show opposing views, some show opinions, some are
positive and some are negative. This is a short one I found while doing
research for my religious studies class that is simple and interesting
from a man who has lived all over the world. Dr. Gary D. Bouma wrote this in October 1979 when he was faculty
at the Department of Anthropology and Sociology, Monash University
Clayton, Victoria, Australia. He has attended the following universities: B.A. Calvin College
(Greek and Philosophy) B.D. Princeton Theological Seminary (Church and

By Saurabh Bhattacharya Starting with Dianetics in the 1950s, science fiction author and philosopher L. Ron Hubbard developed Scientology , which claims to make enlightenment scientifically achievable Could there be a science of enlightenment? Centuries of philosophies spiritual teachers , dogmas and religions later, the only thing that we humans seem to have realized is that enlightenment, or complete freedom if you will, is too much of a personal experience to be achieved systematically by all. Bottomline: you either get enlightened or you don't. Not so, claims Scientology, a unique 'applied religious philosophy' that has been making waves in the USA and Europe for decades with dedicated followers like Hollywood stars Tom Cruise and John Travolta, and is now gradually introducing its doctrines on Indian shores. The underlying principle of Scientology is that man is essentially a spiritual being, with more to him than flesh and blood.

    SCIENTOLOGY (1/4)
The Founder of the Church of Scientology, Lafayette Ronald Hubbard, was born in Tilden, Nebraska, in 1911. He became a famous author known mostly for his pulp science fiction stories, and published over 200 works over the course of his life. In 1938, he deduced the common denominator of existence to be "survive" and outlined his theory that "life is composed of two things: the material universe and an X-factor... that can evidently organize and mobilize the material universe." This fundamental concept formed the basis of both of his philosophies: Dianetics and Scientology. In 1951, Hubbard formed Scientology, which is based on his theory that humans are spiritual beings, as well as his "X-factor." The first Church of Scientology was formed in Los Angeles in 1954 by persons other than Hubbard, and the Founding Church of Scientology was founded in Washington, DC in 1955.

That public interest in Scientology is mounting rapidly is undeniable. This volume was first compiled in 1992 to fill the demand for a concise reference on Scientology. In the seven years since then, the explosive growth of Scientology churches, missions and groups around the world has necessitated the publication of this updated and expanded edition.
While continued expansion will inevitably change the numbers once again, much will remain constant, including, of course, the technology of Scientology and its effect upon all it touches. To provide an understanding of this phenomenon, contained herein is a complete description of Scientology: its religious philosophy, its practices, its organization, its activities and its growing influence on society.
