Menu Spirituality Foundations Modern Traditional ... Satanic Mythos Satanism Due to the many misconceptions society as a whole has against Satanists and Satanism as a whole, I feel it necessary to dispell a few myths beforehand:
  • Satanism is not about harming animals or children, ritual sacrifices of babies, etc.
  • Satanists do not believe that drug abuse is a great idea. It is actually un -Satanic to cloud the mind and impare judgement.
  • Satanism is not merely Christianity reversed. Though most denominations do not believe in all the morals Christianity holds, things are a lot more complex than that.
  • Not all denomonations worship an entity called 'Satan', or believe in a devil of any sort. There are those that do, but this is not a defining point among all Satanic denominations.
  • Satanists are generally not ignorant, moronic anarchists out to take over and/or destroy the world. Most of the Satanists I've had the pleasure of conversing with were well-spoken, well educated, polite, sane , nice and overall delightful people.
Quotes from Anton Szandor LaVey's The Satanic Bible ‘The semantic meaning of Satan is the “adversary” or “opposition” or the “accuser”. The very word “devil” comes from the Indian

Satanism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Satanism is a religious , semi-religious and/or philosophical movement whose adherents recognize Satan , either as an archetype , literal being, pre-cosmic force, or anything in between. Some Satanists celebrate aspects of human nature represented by the usually Christian or literary (Milton, Goethe) Satan archetype. Many Satanists do not worship a deity called Satan or any other deity. Unlike many religions and philosophies, Satanism generally focuses upon the spiritual advancement of the self , rather than upon submission to a deity or a set of moral codes . However, some Satanists do have moral codes, e.g., the 9 Statements or 11 Laws of the LaVeyan Satanists. Satanism is considered Left-Hand Path , one of two branches of religion which has traditionally been looked down upon by the much more prevalent Right-Hand Path . Left-Handers believe in the self and in spiritual enrichment through self-ish means, while Right-Handers believe in others and spiritual enrichment through the dissolution or utter submission of the self to or into something greater.

A. Satanic Beliefs and Criminal Behavior
Such an ethic obviously allows individuals to commit crime if they choose, but it does not prescribe crime.
Mostcrime committed in the name of Satan are acts of mad Satanists acting on theirown.
Theextent of Satanist crime is unknown, but it is neither insignificant norpervasive in society.
B. Typical Satanism-Related Crimes
Druguse and drug trafficking
Suicide(especially teenagers)
Murder(fairly rare, and essentially by loners)
C. Satanism Conspiracy Theories
SinceSatanists are individualists, the idea of a national or even global conspiracyof Satanists is inherently contradictory.
Thenumber of Satanists in America is almost certainly in the low thousands, not inthe tens of thousands or in the millions.

Where was the Satanist? - A Commentary on the Aftermath of Katrina
by Lillee Allee I was minding my own business, just enjoying the conversation in an AOL chatroom on the politics of the hurricane. All of a sudden, I got an IM from someone in the group who had recognized my screen name. This person was one of the tricky ones. He started out by asking me if I was religious. I explained that I was and that I was a reverend. He asked me the oft spoken question: "Where was God when this happened?" I was not surprised. This question has been the topic of radio talk shows and internet chatrooms since the hurricane hit. I did not know a thing about this person or their beliefs. I just took a stab at it and said: "Why do we always ask where God was in a time of trouble? You rarely hear people talking about how God was with them during the happy times or in times of personal triumph. You always hear the call for God in times of trouble. Yes, the hurricane is a natural event, so some will say that God brought it to the United States. However, the tragedy is man-made. Why? If you are a believer at all, you believe that God gave man free will. Thus, it was man's free will to build the city where it stands, below sea level. It was man's free will to build levees and to realize that they needed maintenance. It was man's free will to allocate the funds for something else rather than shoring up those levees.

Satanism Today
Overview of Satanism and Demonolatry at the end of the century
When someone today feels drawn towards Satanism, or simply wants to find out more about it, that person will not have nearly as easy time gathering information on Satanism as it appears on the first glance.
Before experienced web surfers haste to conclude that this can't be true because there are numerous Satanic sites across the web, let us stress that the above sentence says "when someone today feels drawn towards Satanism."
We are talking about persons who are new to the subject, not Satanists who chose Left Hand Path years ago and already know who is who on the Satanic Internet.
In this case, it is exactly the number of the Satanic sites that is part of the problem. Some time ago I was in #satannet chatroom (now renamed to #COScentral) when some college girl came and said that she is doing a paper on Satanism and wanted to find about it first hand.
What followed is just the picture of the general condition of information that can be found on the net.
Before you could say- "irreconcilable differences" - entire screen was covered with arguments.

Deliverance from Witchcraft, Satanism and Occultism
Candace A. Caldwell
I would escape from everything by going to church with my father, but all I saw was a bunch of giggling girls, making fun of somebody's dresses. There was never a single shred of proof that God was alive. As a child, I wanted to be an evangelist...by the time I was 13, I had decided that God was a myth, and quit church. He certainly never seemed to anwser any of my prayers, so I decided that he was of no use to me at all. When I was 15, I slipped going down a flight of stairs at school, and broke two vertebrae in my back and severely herniated a disk. When I could go back to school, I was stuck in the library instead of going to PE... and there I discovered an Encyclopedia of Demonology and Witchcraft. I started learning how to cast natal horoscopes, and then went into palmistry. A strong level of psychic ability ran in my mother's family, and I soon discovered I also had the family "gift." I became associated with a couple of different witch covens, non-sectarian druidic, and I was entranced with their religon. They had such a strong comittment to the earth and nature, and didn't go around hiding the fact that they too had strongly developed psychic powers. After awhile, I got tired of them. They didn't believe in satan or demons, and never knowingly called on these powers, but I knew enough from my christian upbringing to know that they were getting power from somewhere... and it sure wasn't God. That only left the devil, whether they believed in him or not. I began to see their religion as the "cosmic gospel...." that we don't need a savior, because everything is already in us to save ourselves. I wasn't buying it anymore...I wanted something stronger.

35. Spiritual Satanism
The goal of Spiritual satanism is to apply this knowledge. Unlike most religions, Spiritual satanism encourages one to question everything.
http://www.angelfire.com/empire/serpentis666/TRADITIONAL.html
Spiritual Satanism
Spiritual Satanism, like "Traditional Satanism," differs from LaVeyan Satanism. We are aware of the existence of Satan/Lucifer as an actual being. We are not atheists! In spite of major discrepancies, the Church of Satan, founded 1966, by Anton Szandor LaVey, presently takes an atheistic stance as far as external deities are concerned, and views Satan as only an “archetype.” Many Traditional Satanists worship Satan/Lucifer. Some acknowledge him as a friend and do not worship. We respect individuality and personal choices. One's relationship with Satan/Lucifer is up to the individual, as Satanism values free thought and individuality. Satan is the bringer of knowledge. The goal of Spiritual Satanism is to apply this knowledge. Spiritual Satanists do not just talk the talk about becoming a god; we work at it every day. Satan and his Demons guide us to use abilities we never even knew we had. We accomplish this through power meditation. Unlike most religions, Spiritual Satanism encourages one to question everything. Satan is the bringer of knowledge and enlightenment. Being one's personal best and exceeding limitations are the essence of Spiritual Satanism and this begins with using one's brains to their maximum potential.
Spiritual Satanism does not in any way conflict with science. We strongly encourage and support all scientific knowledge and enquiry. We are well aware humanity is dangerously behind in scientific knowledge and understanding due to centuries of oppression by Christianity. We believe that all spiritual and paranormal phenomena can be scientifically explained in a rational manner; scientific knowledge has not yet progressed far enough to comprehend or explain much of the so-called "supernatural."

I. Definition of Satanism
Many people use the term satanism to refer to very different religions and practices. Before we can proceed with a study of satanism, it is necessary to clear up the confusion behind the definition of satanism. In a Christian-dominated America, fundamentalist Christians have been known to use the term satanism to define any practice other than Christianity. This would make 75% of the world's population satanic . A more common definition of satanism is any practice that deals with the occult, such as wicca, santeria, neopagan traditions, etc. These are not at all related and often have completely different beliefs and structures. For the purpose of this web site, I will narrow down the definition of satanism to any individual or group that worships Satan or a precursor/analogue of Satan, either in a literal or figurative form. Below is a further explanation of these divisions. Definition Atheistic/Theistic History Modern Panics ... References

Popular Culture Satanism
Introduction Church of Satan Temple of Set Popular Culture Satanism
Popular Culture Satanism:
It is a wide spread bias throughout present day society that the term Satanism should be associated with evil, destruction and unspeakable crimes. This bad reputation stems from the media publicity received from numerous groups falsely claiming to be part of a Satanic organization. These groups range from innocent dabblers looking into satanic rituals out of curiosity, to serial murderers and child molesters hoping to justify their crimes in the name of the Prince of Darkness. There have been numerous cases involving teenagers who engage in some from of Satanism. These Dabblers, usually youths interested in the black arts, play with the idea of Satanism as a form of rebellion. They blend elements from Religious Satanism, Gothic Satanism, ceremonial magick, and any other useful source of ritual that can be found. It has been estimated that this group numbers in the tens or hundreds of thousands at any one time in North America, but the group is without any type of central organization. Some crimes, such as vandalizing, graffiti and in some cases animal sacrifices, have been attributed to this group but they are virtually all instances of minor criminal activities. Serial murderers and child molesters also fall into this category of popular culture Satanism. The majority of the perpetrators of these crimes are found to possess little if any knowledge of the religion. They claim to be a part of these organizations in order to justify their activities and in many cases as a method of intimidation. Some heavy metal rock bands use satanic symbols in order to gain more popularity. These measures are solely based on an attempt to appeal to modern youth and sell more records. There is no connection with and organized religion and rock and roll bands.
