White House backtracks on Salvation Army report
Fleischer: "I can tell you there was never a suggestion of a quid pro quo." By Kelly Wallace CNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON (CNN) The White House admitted Thursday that Karl Rove, the president's top political adviser, asked the Office of Management and Budget in May to consider a new regulation allowing faith-based charities to discriminate against gays in their hiring. White House press secretary Ari Fleischer's admission contradicted a statement he made Tuesday that no senior administration officials were involved in a request by the Salvation Army to develop a regulation protecting it and other religious charities from local and state laws forbidding discrimination against homosexuals. Fleischer said Thursday that when he spoke earlier in the week he did not know "whether or not Karl Rove specifically had any contact with the Office of Management of Budget." RESOURCES Message Board: Gay rights Democratic Congressmen Jerrold Nadler of New York and Henry Waxman of California sent Rove a letter Thursday asking him to provide more information about his contacts with the Salvation Army.

William Booth , the son of a builder, was born in Nottingham in 1829. At the age of fifteen he was converted to Christianity and became a revivalist preacher. In 1849 he moved to London where he found work in a pawnbroker's sh op at Walworth. Booth developed strong views on the role of church ministers believing they should be "loosing the chains of injustice, freeing the captive and oppressed, sharing food and home, clothing the naked, and carrying out family responsibilities."
In 1852 Booth met Catherine Mumford . Catherine shared William's commitment to social reform but disagreed with his views on women. On one occasion she objected to William describing women as the "weaker sex". William was also opposed to the idea of women preachers. When C atherine argued with William about this he added that although he would not stop Catherine from preaching he would "not like it". Despite their disagreements about the role of women in the church, the couple married on 16th June 1855, at Stockwell New Chapel.

She died in 1906.

Josephine Butler, the daughter of John Grey and Hannah Annett, was born in 1828. Grey was a wealthy landowner and the cousin of Earl Grey , the British Prime Minister who led the Whig administration between 1830 and 1834. Her father was a strong advocate of social reform and played a significant role in the campaign for the 1832 Reform Act and the repeal of the Corn Laws . Josephine grew up to share her father's religious and moral principles and his strong dislike of inequality and injustice. Josephine was an attrac tive woman and Prince Leopold claimed that she was " considered by many people to be the most beautiful woman in the world." In 1852 Josephine married George Butler , an examiner of schools in Oxford . In the first five years of marriage Josephine had four children. In 1857 the couple moved from Oxford after George Butler was appointed vice-principal of Cheltenham College . George and Josephine had similar political views and during the American Civil War they encountered a great deal of hostility in Cheltenham when they expressed their support for the anti-slavery movement.
