Saint Monica
St. Monica, Middleton, Nova Scotia The first Mass, of which we have record, celebrated in Middleton, was in 1919, in the old Theatre, by Father James McKinnon. From 1909 to 1926, the services of the church were held in the home of A.A. Forrestall, even one funeral being there. Later, the congregation's growth requiring larger accommodations, services were held in such places as the Armoury , The Community Hall and The Rink. In 1952, the present church was erected, and, though the interior was unfinished and the people sat on piles of materials, nail kegs or whatever else would serve, it was put to immediate use. In July, 1959 the Parish was established by the late Bishop Lemenager, with Rev. L.J. Theriault the first Parish Priest, since which time it has steadily progressed from strength to greater strength. St. Brigid, at East Dalhousie, is presently a Mission of St. Monica's, Middleton. Mass Hours:

  • History and present : as was the case with Dushanbe, the German community was the reason of the creation of the parish in Kurgan Tube. The priests which worked in Dushanbe, after Sunday celebrations in the capital went to Kurgan for Mass and confessions (see historical pictures). But the German community in this town also left the country after the Soviet Union disappeared: some went to Germany, some to Russia. At present time the Catholic community is formed by mixed Russians, Tajik, Uzbek. There are some 70 Catholics in town. Fr. Marcelo Brandan is in charge of the pastoral care of Kurgan Tube, where he lives and works three days of the week. Address : ulitsa Pravda 20, Kurgan Tube.

Sts. Rufina
The present Roman Martyrology records saints of this name on the following days: (2) On 19 July, Justa and Rufina, martyrs at Seville (Hispalis) in Spain. Only St. Justa is mentioned in the "Martyrologium Hieronymianum" (93), but in the historical martyrologies (Quentin, "Les martyrologes historiques", 176-77) Justina is also mentioned, following the legendary Acts. There is no doubt that both are historical martyrs of the Spanish Church. (4) On 24 of 25 August, the feast of two martyrs, Rufina and Eutyche, at Cupua in Campania is recorded in the "Martyrologium Hieronymianum" (110). Nothing further is known of either of these saints. 168. CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Sts. Hippolytus
Several mentions of a saint or saints named Hippolytus occur in the roman Martyrology. Some must be identified with Hippolytus of Rome, but at least one (a Greek martyr ) cannot possibly be the same person as the roman presbyter.
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/07362a.htm
Home Encyclopedia Summa Fathers ... H > Sts. Hippolytus A B C D ... Z
Sts. Hippolytus
Besides the presbyter, St. Hippolytus of Rome , others of the name are mentioned in the old martyrologies and legends of martyrs as having shed their blood for the Faith. Some of these, however, are to be identified with him. In the Acts of St. Laurence we find an officer Hippolytus who, with his nurse Concordia and nineteen others of his household, was put to death for the Faith. The same statement also appears in the Roman Martyrology under the date of 13 August. But this Hippolytus is without doubt identical with the presbyter and martyr who has been connected by legend with St. Laurence, whose grave is situated near the cemetery of Hippolytus. Hippolytus was also commemorated at a later date in common with St. Cassian, with whom he had no connection whatsoever. According to the hymn of Prudentius on Cassian (Peristephanon, hymn IX), the latter was a teacher at Imola (Forum Cornelii) and was surrendered to the fury of his pupils, who tortured him to death with their iron styles. He is without doubt an historical martyr, who probably suffered in the persecution of Diocletian Another Hippolytus is likewise found among a group of martyrs described as "Greek martyrs" (martyres groeci), whose burial place was venerated in the catacomb of Callistus. This Hippolytus is certainly distinct from the Roman presbyter (De Rossi, "Roma sotterranea", III, 201-208). The feast of these saints is celebrated on 2 December.

Sts. Rufus
The present Roman Martyrology records ten saints of this name. Historical mention is made of the following: (1) On 19 April, a group of martyrs in Melitene in Armenia, one of whom bears the name of Rufus. These martyrs are mentioned already in the "Martyrologium Hieronymianum" (ed. De Rossi-Duchesne, 46). (2) On 1 August, Rufus, with several companions who, according to the most reliable manuscripts of the "Martyrol. Hieronym." died at Tomi, the place being afterwards by mistake changed to Philadelphia (cf. Quentin, "Les martyrologes historiques", 337). (3) On 27 August, two martyrs named Rufus at Capua one, whose name also appears as Rufinus in the "Martyrol. Hieronym." (ed. cit., 111). The other is said to have suffered with a companion, Carponius, in the Diocletian persecution (cf. "Bibliotheca hagiographica latina", II, 1070; Acta SS., VI August, 18-19). (4) On 25 September, several martyrs at Damascus, among them one named Rufus. (5) On 7 November, a St. Rufus, who is said to have been Bishop of Metz; his history, however, is legendary. His name was inserted at a later date in an old manuscript of the "Martyrol. Hieronym." (ed. cit., 140). In the ninth century his

Contents: Augustinianism Before Jansenius Seventeenth Century Jansenism Eighteenth Century Jansenism Jansenism in Holland and Italy ... Eschatological Universalism Jansenism was a doctrine within Catholicism that emphasised human depravity, gratuitous predestination through efficacious grace and the necessity of love of God. It was based primarily on readings of St. Augustine’s works in which concupiscence – understood as a love of the world – cannot be overcome unless God inspires a love of Himself and of creatures in reference to Him as one’s motive. Its adherents sought to replicate the sacramental discipline of the patristic Church. Absolution was considered to be valid only if repentance was motivated by the love of God. Sacramental penance had to be undertaken after confession had been made but before absolution could be received. Frequent communion was reserved for those with a pure love of God and detachment from the world. The Jansenists and the Jesuits fought intensely over eschatological, sacramental and pastoral concerns for a century and a half. Both tendencies eventually transformed Catholicism. One might say that we now have a late Jansenist approach to the liturgy and to the laity reading the Bible and a Jesuitical approach to eschatology, the sacraments and pastoral compromise with the world and its errors (ecumenism, inter-faith, etc.) The role of the Jesuits in preparing and spearheading the Vatican II Reformation is widely recognised and progressives liken modern reactionary Traditionalists to Jansenists.
