Roman Catholic Church, Catholicism
General Information The Roman Catholic church, the largest of the Christian churches, although present in all parts of the world, is identified as Roman because of its historical roots in Rome and because of the importance it attaches to the worldwide ministry of the bishop of Rome, the pope. Several Eastern Rite Churches , whose roots are in regional churches of the Eastern Mediterranean, are in full communion with the Roman Catholic church. In 1980 there were some 783 million Roman Catholics, approximately 18% of the world's population. The 51 million Roman Catholics in the United States (1982) constitute 22% of that country's population. These statistics are based on baptisms, usually conferred on infants, and do not necessarily imply active participation in the church's life nor full assent to its beliefs. A growing estrangement between the Catholic church in the West and the Orthodox church of the East in the first millennium led to a break between them in the 11th century, and the two regions diverged in matters of theology, liturgy, and disciplinary practices. Within Western Christianity beginning with the 16th - century Reformation, the Roman Catholic church came to be identified by its differences with the Protestant churches.

A classic instance of this confusion was evidenced by Mr. Joe Comartin, MP for Tecumseh-Windsor during the parliamentary debate on Bill C-38. He not only spoke in favour of Bill C -38's passage but also mentioned that he teaches in the marriage preparation program at his parish. By virtue of nature itself, marriage is a union of a man and a woman with an inherent capacity of bringing children into the world. Legislation which redefines marriage cannot achieve the impossible. It cannot alter the simple reality that there is a fundamental difference between a relationship that, by its nature, has the potential to create a child and a relationship, that by its nature, absolutely does not. If, however, one were refused because one excludes basic elements of the role itself, that is not in any way an injustice. A person who does not accept catholic teaching on fundamental matters is disqualified from acting on behalf of the Church in a public capacity. Marriage is a fundamental matter. Accordingly, Bishop Fabbro removed Mr. Comartin from his involvement in marriage preparation and liturgical ministries.

Bringing Christ to the World Through Catholic Homeschooling In his writings, the late, great Pope John Paul II, often referred to the school of Mary, or the school of the saints, or the school of the family from whom or where we could learn to become closer to Christ. If there is one school where I have learned and where we can learn more even now, it is the school of Pope John Paul II. It is no coincidence that God called Pope John Paul II home only after he had concluded writing about the source and summit of the Christian life — the Eucharist — in Ecclesia de Eucharistia and proclaimed October 2004 – October 2005 the Year of the Eucharist. Nothing more could have surpassed this theme. Click here to continue reading this article Sebrina Black Appeal Join us for the

Evangelium vitae
To the Bishops

Men and Women religious
lay Faithful
and all People of Good Will
on the Value and Inviolability
of Human Life
INTRODUCTION 1. The Gospel of life is at the heart of Jesus' message. Lovingly received day after day by the Church, it is to be preached with dauntless fidelity as "good news" to the people of every age and culture. At the dawn of salvation, it is the Birth of a Child which is proclaimed as joyful news: "I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord" (Lk 2:10-11). The source of this "great joy" is the Birth of the Saviour; but Christmas also reveals the full meaning of every human birth, and the joy which accompanies the Birth of the Messiah is thus seen to be the foundation and fulfilment of joy at every child born into the world (cf. Jn 16:21). When he presents the heart of his redemptive mission, Jesus says: "I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly" (Jn 10:10). In truth, he is referring to that "new" and "eternal" life which consists in communion with the Father, to which every person is freely called in the Son by the power of the Sanctifying Spirit. It is precisely in this "life" that all the aspects and stages of human life achieve their full significance. The incomparable worth of the human person
