Old Roman Catholics
I. Group Profile
  • Name: Old Catholics/ Old Roman Catholics
  • Founder: Cornelius Jansen
  • Date of Birth/Death:
  • Year Founded: Established in 1871 with the Declaration of Catholic Congress at Munich.
  • History The Old Catholics arrival is fairly recent in theUnited States when compared to their involvement in Europe; many first generation Old Catholics in America are still active in their congregations, while the history of the Old Catholics begins in Europe a few centuries ago. Some argue the basic beliefs and motivations of Old Catholicism began in the sixteenth century with Cornelius Jansen and the incidents at Port Royal. Cornelius Jansen (1585-1638) believed that after the time of St. Augustine, the Catholic Church began to decline in practice and beliefs. Abbe de St. Cyran (1581-1641) also agreed with Jansen and claimed only the Port Royal Community in France with their extremely conservative lifestyle were the true devotees of Catholicism. In turn, the community lost the support of friends and Pope Clement XI. On September 8, 1713 the Pope issueda bill called "Unigentius" which contained the misconduct of Jansen's teachings and punishments for following these teachings. Many fled to Protestant Holland where they were received although the Protestants had more serious issues and concerns of their own and they did not fully agree with the credence of Jansen. The common thread they shared that bonded them was their antipathy for the Jesuits.

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle... Seattle Catholic is not affiliated with the Archdiocese of Seattle
A Journal of Catholic News and Views 31 Aug 2001 The Wisdom of Bishop Cawcutt Dissident and homosexual activist continues unpunished Bishop Reginald Cawcutt of South Africa made statements directly opposed to the Church's teaching on contraception, fornication and homosexuality when he gave his recommendations to the people of Africa: "Ideally the only way of stopping Aids is through stopping sex. There is, however, a big difference between the ideal and the reality. ... Abstain until you're in a stable relationship, preferably marriage, whether it be gay or straight, or whatever. And then be faithful to your partner. ... If you are promiscuous you could get Aids, so you should learn to use condoms correctly." (emphasis mine here and throughout) The bishop also voiced support for condoms and remarked that the Catholic Church's opposition to the use of contraception was "based on theological, rather than Biblical reasoning." Aside from being morally bankrupt, his advice also suffers from the practical problem that the effectiveness of condoms in preventing STDs is, at best, questionable. In a recently released statement, several groups representing over 10,000 doctors have accused the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) of covering up their own government's research that shows condoms do not protect individuals from most sexually transmitted diseases.

Why " Roman Catholic " instead of " Catholic "?
We use the phrase " Roman Catholic " in place of " Catholic " to avoid confusion. Most Christian faith groups acknowledge the Nicene Creed and thus regard themselves as "Catholic," at least as far as being part of the " catholic and apostolic church ." Within any one given faith group, the meaning of the term " Catholic " is relatively clear. But our site deals with all Christian denominations and all other religions. To assure clarity and to avoid ambiguity, we use the term " Roman Catholic " when referring to the church headed by the pope in Rome. We use similar terms (e.g. Evangelical Catholic, Anglo-Catholic) when referring to some other faith groups. We often use the abbreviation RCC to refer to the Roman Catholic Church. This saves wear and tear on your eyeballs and on our fingers.

    Overview:
The current views of the Roman Catholic Church (RCC) concerning other Christian denominations and other religions are explained in a Vatican declaration Dominus Iesus. According to the Times News Service, the statement implies that " Churches such as the Church of England, where the apostolic succession of bishops from the time of St. Peter is disputed by Rome, and churches without bishops, are not considered 'proper' churches. " They suffer from " defects ." This statement includes all denominations of Christianity with the exception of the RCC itself, and the Eastern Orthodox Churches. Religions other than Christianity are considered to be " gravely deficient. " Their rituals can constitute " an obstacle to salvation " for their followers. Labor Day 2005
Labor Day marks an end and a beginning. It represents the real end of summer and the beginning of a new year of school and work. Let us recall the constant plea of Pope John Paul II to live in “solidarity” and his consistent defense of the right to decent work, fair wages, and full worker participation in economic life. Let us thank God for our many blessings and ask His help in living out “the Gospel of work” and making His “kingdom come, on earth as it is in heaven.” This is the legacy of Pope John Paul II and our task this Labor Day.

Cathars and Catharism in the Languedoc
The Cathars were a religious group who appeared in Europe in the eleventh century, their origins something of a mystery. Records from the Roman Church mention them under various names and in various places, occasionaly throwing light on basic beliefs . The Roman Church debated with itself whether they were Christian heretics or whether they were not Christians at all. In the Languedoc, famous at the time for its high culture, tolerance and liberalism, Catharism took root and gained more and more adherents during the twelfth century. By the early thirteenth century it was probably the majority religion in the area, supported by the nobility as well as the common people. This was too much for the Roman Church, some of whose own priests had become Cathars. Worst of all, Cathars of the Languedoc refused to pay their tithes. The Pope
