BY THOMAS EVANS A distinguishing trait in the character of the primitive Friends, was the earnestness with which they enforced, both by example and precept, the indispensable obligation of a life of holiness in the fear of God. While they felt the necessity of having a sound and firm belief in all the doctrines of the Christian religion as set forth in the Holy Scriptures, they were also convinced that unless this belief was carried out in the daily walk and conversation, and accompanied by those fruits of the Spirit which are the evidences of true faith, as well as the ornament of the Christian, it would be of little avail. Recognizing in its full extent the declaration, "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God," and the test laid down by the Saviour of men, "By their fruits shall ye know them;" as well as his solemn words, "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that doth the will of my Father which is in heaven," they were concerned to warn all against the delusive notion that men might live in sin, and in the indulgence of their carnal wills and appetites, and yet be saved by a professed dependence on what the Lord Jesus Christ has graciously done in his flesh for the redemption of mankind. They were plain, practical, self-denying men and women, deeply and earnestly engaged to walk in the obedience of faith to all the requirements of the Divine law; and their minds being enlightened from on high to see the true spiritual nature and the transforming effects of the religion of the gospel, they apprehended that many of its professors were resting their hopes of salvation on a mere assent of the understanding to the truths recorded in the Holy Scriptures, and in the compliance with outward ceremonies, without bringing forth those "good works which were before ordained that we should walk in them." The inward life of righteousness in the daily fear of God, being the great object of their earnest concern and engagement, both for themselves and others, they called on their hearers to come home into their own hearts, and examine in the light which Christ gives, whether they were clean and pure, or defiled and unholy.

    Welcome to the
    Friends in Christ Web Site
Welcome! We're glad you are visiting our Web site. Here you can find information about the Friends in Christ ministry. We have a local ministry building Christian small groups and providing other Christian opportunities primarily in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC and Baltimore. We provide, and work through larger faith communities to provide, opportunities to nurture your growth in Christ through small groups which meet in different places. Each small group chooses its own format and focus. It is our hope that small groups will reflect ethnic and cultural diversity.
    Christian Worship Group
In our efforts to form an ongoing worship group that would focus on hearing Christ speak to us out of the silence, it came to seem that this could likely be sustained only within the context of a larger faith community. We have found this community in Cedar Ridge Community Church (where both Friends in Christ Co-Coordinators attend). A group using silence in worship will meet on first and third Thursdays at 7:30 PM, starting October 20, 2005, in the Barn at Cedar Ridge, 2410 Spencerville Road, Spencerville, MD. If interested in this group, let

Welcome! Who are the builders of, and worshippers at this meeting house? Are we only a sect of the past, or do we really still exist today? We, who have been called Seekers of the Truth, Quakers, and Friends, are members of the Religious Society of Friends. Yes, we are a sect, but we do not separate ourselves from the world around us. We believe that God is present in every person and that peace is preferable to war. We gather in silent communal worship to wait on the Spirit of God. Sometimes It moves us in other ways. We have no formal creed, no ritual, dogma, or liturgy. Instead, to help us follow Divine guidance we pose, both individually and corporately, searching queries; we strive to trust to love, rather than react to fear; we work towards peace because we believe it is the only way; we are led to implement our concerns for equal rights for all. Many of us have been drawn to this religion - Quakerism - because of its dual commitment to spiritual awareness and social action. These beliefs are not always easy to hold, nor to honor with action, but our search has led us to commit ourselves to them.

var site="sm1QuakerInfo" A Quaker Ministry of Prayer and Learning devoted to the School of the Spirit is dedicated to helping all who wish to be more faithful listeners and responders to the inward work of Christ. Within the Religious Society of Friends, the traditional meetings of ministers and elders were sometimes referred to as a "school of the Spirit." In gathered worship Friends learned to discern the movement of the Inward Teacher and test their discernment with one another. This practiced listening extended into every aspect of their lives. Living into this way of being is not always easy; we often resist, preferring to ignore God's promptings into an ever-deepening union. But the still, quiet voice will not be silent, and with discipline and with the support of others we can find ourselves becoming more faithful. This ministry offers two forms of program to deepen our faithfulness: the two-year program of prayer and study On Being a Spiritual Nurturer , first offered in 1990 and now with its sixth class; and the tradition of

Society of Friends (Quakers)
The official designation of an Anglo-American religious sect originally styling themselves "Children of Truth" and "Children of Light", but "in scorn by the world called Quakers". The founder of the sect, George Fox, son of a well-to-do weaver, was born at Fenny Drayton in Leicestershire, England, July, 1624. His parents, upright people and strict adherents of the established religion Church of England or of the innumerable dissenting sects which flooded the land, he was thrown back upon himself and forced to accept his own imaginings as "revelations" . "I fasted much", he tells us in his Journal, "walked abroad in solitary places many days, and often took my Bible and sat in hollow trees and lonesome places until night came on; and frequently in the night walked mournfully about by myself. For I was a man of sorrows in the first working of the Lord in me." This anguish of spirit continued, with intermissions, for some years; and it is not surprising that the lonely youth read into his Bible all his own idiosyncrasies and limitations. Founding his opinions on isolated texts, he gradually evolved a system at variance with every existing form of

Friends
A group of religious bodies, including: the Orthodox Society of Friends ; the Hicksite Society of Friends , dissenters under the leadership of Elias Hicks; the Wilburite Orthodox Conservative Friends , separatists under the leadership of John Wilbur; and the Religious Society of Friends of Philadelphia who seceded from the Wilburites. The religious movement known as the Society of Friends (Orthodox) , and commonly called Quakers , and also Children of Truth Children of Light Friends of Truth , began in England about the middle of the 17th century under the direction of George Fox. The Quakers suffered persecution in Massachusetts, Virginia, and Connecticut, but were cordially received, in Rhode Island. The first meeting-house was established, . Although the first attitude of the Friends was to treat slavery with toleration, many dissensions arose and finally in slaveholders were to be 'disowned' if they refused to manumit their slaves. They were subject to much suffering during the Revolution since they took no part in the war because of their religion. A small body of Friends actively supported the Revolution, and were disowned or seceded. They were known as the Free or Fighting Quakers , but after the war they disappeared, and the Friends loyally supported the new government. Although the doctrine of the Orthodox Friends agrees in essential points with that of the Christian Church, they differ in the manner of worship and appointment of ministers; attach great importance to the immediate personal teaching of the Holy Spirit, or Light Within, or Inner Light; have no outward ordinances, including

THE SOCIETY OF FRIENDS (QUAKERS) AND HOMOSEXUALITY
Click Here to Visit our Sponsors. Quaker congregations are almost completely autonomous. There exists no central general assembly or main authority within the Society of Friends that can make definitive statements of policy for the entire denomination. Instead, Quakers have regional "meetings" at which a group of congregations gather. Most Christians and Christian groups can be sorted into three categories: conservative, mainline and liberal. Quakers cover the full range. And this is displayed in their beliefs about homosexuality and bisexuality. The following are excerpts taken from their statements on the topic: British Quakers
In 1963, British Quakers published a book "Towards a Quaker View of Sex" . It put forth the argument that it was not the gender and sexual orientation of a person that mattered; it was the depth of feeling they have for each other. "Where there is a genuine tenderness, an openness to responsibility, and the seed of commitment, God is surely not shut out. Can we not say that God can enter any relationship in which there is a measure of selfless love?" Subsequently, the
