Denomination: Society of Friends (Quaker). The building: An ordinary terraced house close to the city centre and the cathedral. The house was indistinguishable from the others in the street except for the large "Society of Friends Meeting House" notice in the front garden. The neighborhood: It was raining, so the main objective was getting under cover rather than sightseeing. However, there was a nice park next to the car park and a fine view of Salisbury Cathedral as we were driving in. The cast: Being a Society of Friends service, there was no leader. What was the name of the service? Meeting for Worship. How full was the building? The meeting room (the ground floor front and back rooms in the house knocked together) had a total of 28 worshippers. This left a few seats empty, but not many. Did anyone welcome you personally? One of the Friends greeted me at the door and made sure that I knew how the service was run. In the meeting room itself, there was no talking, although there were plenty of friendly smiles. Was your pew comfortable?

The 18th century was thus the first full century of Quakerism. There are many aspects to the development of Quakerism in the 18th century, of which we will here only touch briefly on some of the more important ones, with an emphasis in developments on the American continent. Consolidation By the time of the 18th century, the initial explosion of Quakerism on the world scene had run its course. With the notable exception of Margaret Fell , most of the key figures of the first generation of Friends had died before the beginning of the 18th century. Thus, it is not surprising that there was reduced evangelical effort and increasing emphasis on preserving the testimonies and values of Quakerism. The distinguishing marks of the Christian life as understood by Friends became consolidated into a discipline enforced upon members and sometimes interpreted fairly narrowly. Most obvious to outsiders was the transformation of a concern against ostentation and vanity in dress into the adoption of a standard form of dress, almost a uniform - the "plain dress" with the use of bright colors strictly proscribed. The Quaker Meeting House at Brigflatts, which was an industrial community, is two miles south of Sedbergh . It was built in 1675, and is the oldest meeting house in the North of England.
