var site="sm1QuakerInfo" Bayard Rustin
Civil Rights Leader

by Buzz Haughton
Originally published February 1, 1999 at Suite101.com
Buzz Haughton is a librarian at Shields Library , University of California, Davis. He is also a member of Davis Monthly Meeting in Pacific Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). This article appeared in print in the Fall 1999 issue of Quaker Studies and in 2000 in Afro-Americans in New York Life and History . It appears here by permission of the author.] Bayard Rustin
Background on Bayard Rustin
Although Bayard Rustin was one of the most important leaders of the American civil rights movement from the advent of its modern period in the 1950s until well into the 1980s, his name was seldom mentioned; he received comparatively little press or media attention, and others' names were usually much more readily associated with the movement than his was. His was a behind-the-scenes role that, for all its importance, never garnered Rustin the public acclaim he deserved. Rustin's homosexuality and early communist affiliation probably meant that the importance of his contribution to the civil rights and peace movements would never be acknowledged. However, fairness demands that the extent of Rustin's work receive a fair public reception. Bayard Taylor Rustin was born on March 17, 1912, to Florence Rustin, one of eight children of Julia and Janifer Rustin of West Chester, Pennsylvania. Florence's child had been born out of wedlock; the father was Archie Hopkins. Julia and Janifer decided to raise young Bayard as their son, the youngest of the large Rustin family. Julia Rustin had been raised a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers), and even though she attended the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the denomination of her husband, she impressed on the children she raised certain Quaker principles: the equality of all human beings before God, the vital need for nonviolence, the importance of dealing with everyone with love and respect.

Index The Quaker Message Staff The Meeting for Worship 2005 Annual Sessions Information ... Other Quaker Yearly Meetings The Quaker Message George Fox, one of the early founders of the Society of Friends in seventeenth century England, had as a youth suffered great anguish as he sought an answer to his spiritual quest. His answer came, after much reading of the Scriptures and visits to many ministers and counselors, when he heard a voice within him which said: "There is One, even Christ Jesus, that can speak to thy condition." "And when I heard it," he later reported, "my heart did leap for joy." He had found God directly without the aid of ritual or clergy, and henceforth his distinctive message was: Christ speaks directly to each human heart who seeks Him; listen to the teacher within; He placed His light within each of us, and as we follow the way He directs we shall be led into life and Truth.

Getting There
Worship A short history of Portishead Meeting House ...
Thornbury
A peaceful 17th century, grade II listed, thatched meeting house with a separate small hall, available for hire, set in the burial ground. People who come to worship for the first time tell us how peaceful the Meeting House is. Though there are not many of us, and sadly children don't come often, we offer a warm welcome to everyone. Meeting lasts for an hour after which visitors particularly are invited to stay for refreshments. Our Hall is available on Sunday mornings for use as a children's room and prior notice of visiting children will allow us time for suitable preparation. The Hall is also used by a local playgroup in term time (mornings) and by several local groups meeting (usually fortnightly) in the evenings. Details of availability and hire charges can be obtained from John Rickard on 01275 842950. Portishead Friends outreach includes their long-standing co-operation with the other churches in the town on issues of joint concern.

The members are commonly called Quakers, originally a term of derision. Origins and Early Years Claiming that no theologically trained priest or outward rite is needed to establish communion between the soul and its God, Fox taught that everyone could receive whatever understanding and guidance in divine truth they might need from the “inward light,” or “inner light,” supplied in their own heart by the Holy Spirit. Many of his early converts were from among groups of separatists . Calling themselves Children of Light, Friends in the Truth, and Friends, they eventually agreed upon the name Religious Society of Friends. The Friends regarded the sacraments of the church as nonessential to Christian life. They refused to attend worship in the established church and to pay tithes. They also resisted the requirement to take oaths and opposed war, refusing to bear arms. Believing in the equality of all men and women, Friends would not remove their hats before their alleged superiors. Consequently, they were subject to persecution until the passage of the Toleration Act of 1689. The Friends in the United States In colonial America the Friends often met with severe condemnation and some persecution, except in Rhode Island and in Pennsylvania, where in 1682 William

What is the Quarterly Meeting ?
The Religious Society of Friends is organized into Monthly, Quarterly and Yearly Meetings. The basic unit is the Monthly Meeting, the equivalent to the local congregation in most other churches. It is customary for Friends to worship every Sunday at a designated time. It is also the practice to hold business meetings once a month. Members of a Monthly Meeting are also members of the Quarterly meeting which meets for worship and business every three months. Similarly, all members within a certain geographic region belong to a Yearly Meeting which meets for several days once a year. Bucks Quarterly Meeting is composed of 14 unprogrammed Monthly Meetings in the Bucks County area (including one New Jersey Meeting). Bucks Quarter is a member of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. var site="sm1QuakerInfo" Towards Renewal Within the Religious Society of Friends, Part 1 of 2
by Bill Samuel Reprinted with permission from Quaker Religious Thought #87 (May 1996) I appreciate the invitation from the editor to respond to Grant Thompson's paper, "A Perspective on Friends Membership" (QRT #86). I will draw upon that and other articles in the same issue in a discussion of Christian renewal within the Religious Society of Friends, with a particular focus on Christians in meetings where Friends lack a corporate commitment to Christ. The second series of choices offered by Thompson is:
    2. Ideally, the set of requirements for membership in Friends meetings (a) should , (b) should not include, as a subset, the set of requirements for membership in the Church Universal (i.e., the Body of Christ).
Thompson restricts his discussion to the first option. While I agree with Thompson that this should be the case, it is not in the Monthly Meeting (Adelphi) and Yearly Meeting (Baltimore) in which I hold my formal membership in Friends. For those of us for whom being part of the Body of Christ is central to our identity, this presents major problems.
