Our diverse communities emphasize acts of social justice alongside prayer and study as an essential part of their spiritual practice. Reconstructionist Judaism affirms that religion can and must be a powerful force for promoting communal discussion about ethics and values. The Torah tradition itself is a deep and wide resource for this project. Yet we know that generations of Jews have sharpened and distilled the ethical insights of Judaism as a result of the encounter with other cultures and traditions, and so it is our time. spirituality
Reconstructionists hold diverse ideas about God, but we share an emphasis on Godliness those hopes, beliefs, and values within us that impel us to work for a better world, that give us strength and solace in times of need, that challenge us to grow, and that deepen our joy in moments of celebration.
gender-neutral language
Reconstructionist prayerbooks speak of God beyond the gender concepts of male or female, and beyond the traditional metaphors of "king of the universe." God is addressed as, among other things, "the Healer," "The Teacher," "The Comforter," and "The Presence." We are engaged in the spiritual adventure of discovering the many attributes of God.

Chasidic (Hasidic) Judaism (see also Renewal A Hasid is a follower of a Jewish movement that had its origins with Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov in the Carpathian Mountains in a little town around the year 1760. It developed combining a love of Torah with joy, mysticism and outreach to the common folk.

Reconstructionism at a glance...
Reconstructionists define Judaism as more than a religion. For us it is a civilization encompassing history, literature, art and music, land and language.
Our religious tradition is the reflection of our ancestors' search for meaning, purpose and value. In our own search, we are egalitarian, participatory, and open to varying viewpoints.
Belonging to the Jewish people comes before behaving or believing through our shared past and through our communal experience of worship, study and celebration, we affirm our sense of belonging.
We are respectful of traditional Jewish practice but also open to new interpretation and forms of religious expression; tradition has "a vote but not a veto."
Our diverse views of God share an emphasis on godliness rather than on the supernatural. We value that power in the universe which infuses all of creation with a sense of transcendence and impels us to improve the world and ourselves.
We believe we are involved in the evolution of Judaism right now, and are responsible for shaping the spiritual and cultural legacy we will leave to future generations.
Perhaps you are a Reconstructionist and just don't know it.

Careful, Daniel
User comment on article: The Future of Judaism
Submitted by John W. McGinley January 25, 2005 at Your first sentence is inaccurate. "Orthodoxy" both khassidic and non-khassidic is itself a result of the Haskala, just as much as Reform Judaism, which started in Germany and transplanted itself to America, and Conservative and Reconstructionist Judaism which are American invention. "Orthodoxy" emerged in the opening decades of the ninetheenth century as a response to the Haskala in general and the emergence of Reform Judaism in particular. Jewish "Orthodoxy" is just as much of a product of the Enlightenment (and its Haskala aftermath) as is Reform Judaism. But let that rest.
The rest of your article is insightful and substantially correct. Both in the American Diaspora and in Israel the future is with some evolution of "Orthodoxy." Basically this is good. Reform Judaism is not Judasim nor is Reconstructionist Judaism Judaism. Even Conservative Judaism is ceasing to be a valid form of Judaism. The future, for sure, is with "Orthodoxy." And this is good.
The fly in the ointment, however, is the drive of "Chabad" (previously known as "Lubavitch") to gain hegemony within "Orthodoxy" in America, Israel, and all over. Their technologically clever and effective "outreach" program is becoming more and more successful. But Chabadian synthesis between Maimonides and Kabbalah is frighteningly puerile and terribly misrepresentative of both Scripture and the Talmud. If "Chabad" achieves hegemony in Judaism, then Judaisim will die out, killed off by a "Disney-World" syndrome. Yes. It IS over for Reform, Conservative, and Reconstructinist Judaism. "Orthodoxy" is now called upon to resist the seductive allure of Chabad and produce a Judaism worthy of these difficult times. JWMcG

Reconstructionist Judaism
Reconstructionist Judaism, the newest of the four major religious movements on the North American Jewish scene, defines Judaism as the evolving religious civilization of the Jewish people. In the course of its evolution, Judaism has passed through distinct stages, each reflecting the conditions under which it functioned. Judaism continues to evolve in our day, in response to the sweeping changes that have taken place in Jewish history. We seek a Judaism richly and deeply connected to the past. Yet we also seek a Judaism that reflects the understandings and satisfies the spiritual yearnings of the contemporary Jew. Each generation of Jews has the right — indeed the responsibility — to study the tradition anew and to carefully reformulate ancient beliefs and practices in the light of its own understanding of Jewish teachings and ideals. Thus, for the continued vitality of the Jewish people, we have to work toward the renewal, the reconstruction, of Judaism today.

What are people saying about Shir Hadash?
"Shir Hadash has helped me discover my own ideas about God rather than just accepting Dogma."
Building a Caring Community
Shir Hadash means a "new song" and that is truly what we have set out to be. Our Shabbat and our High Holiday services speak to our congregants in a wonderful way many individuals say they haven't experienced before. Singing, storytelling and drama are just a few of the ways used to enhance our services while embracing the richness of Jewish tradition. If you are searching for a meaningful way to enrich your life, we invite you to try Shir Hadash.
We are a growing Jewish congregation that began with just six families in the summer of 1995 . In three months, we grew to over 40 households. Now in our ninth year, we number over 190 households drawn from more than 20 different towns in the northern and northwestern suburbs of Chicago. Our growth is the result of the feeling from our members that Shir Hadash provides something that has been missing in our livesa meaningful, contemporary Judaism.
Our membership is built from people with varied backgrounds: some come from a traditional Jewish experience with knowledge of Hebrew and ritual; others are interfaith marriage partners who may be experiencing Judaism for the first time; still others are Jews who have not been involved in Jewish life for many years. Together, we have become a
