Definition:
Reconstructionist Judaism is a modern Jewish movement founded by Mordecai M. Kaplan (1881-1982) in the early 20th century in an effort to further reform Judaism for the modern era, and especially for American culture. His book Judaism as a Civilization: Toward a Reconstruction of American Jewish Life sets forth his goals and ideas most clearly. Reconstructionist Judaism treats Judaism as a culture which constantly adapts in order to ensure its own survival. Such adaptation is not bad, but is instead simply a natural part of the social process. Thus, in some ways, Reconstructionist Judaism can be even more liberal than Reform Judaism - it doesn't even require members to be theists or, if they are, that they believe that God singled out the Jewish people in any fashion. In other ways, however, Reconstructionists can be more conservative because they observe more of Jewish law. Even then, though, they do not do so merely because it is traditional. In 2000, the congregation formally joined the Reconstructionist movement. Reconstructionist Judaism, the fourth branch of contemporary Judaism, defines Judaism as the evolving religious civilization of the Jewish people. Reconstructionists therefore seek to create warm and welcoming synagogue communities that are respectful of traditional Jewish practice yet open to new interpretation and creative forms of religious expression. Reconstructionism emphasizes participatory and democratic decision making around issues of communal observance and practice, and encourages individuals to find their own connection to Jewish life.

Judaism with the outer layers of dead formalism rationally removed to allow the true heart of Judaism's ethical and moral imperatives to continue to beat on into the 21st century. #2 Reconstructionism at a glance...
Reconstructionists define Judaism as more than a religion. For us it is a civilization encompassing history, literature, art and music, land and language.
Our religious tradition is the reflection of our ancestors' search for meaning, purpose and value. In our own search, we are an egalitarian, participatory and inclusive community open to varying viewpoints.

Which of today’s major branches of Judaism began earliest? Who is credited with changing the way Judaism regards miracles? When did Hasidism begin? When did polygamy end? How did Orthodoxy come to have power in Israel? The answers in this Judaism timeline may astound you.
Judaism is thousands of years old, yet its concepts and practices change in response to the needs and understandings of Jews. So, while we trace our history back, it is a history of evolution. Many of the practices, which we associate with being fundamental to Judaism, may only be a few generations old. The nature of marriage, the role of women, the role of God and the concept of miracle, the practices of Bar and Bat Mitzvah, and so on, have all gone through transformations.
The claim of any branch of Judaism to be the one original unchanged construct is not credible. The claim that Jewish descent is through the mother, for example, is belied by the Torah, in which descent is through the father. (Moses and King Solomon both married non-Jews.) Many Jews, as well as the Reform and Humanistic movements, accept that a Jew is a child of a Jewish parent, or a person who chooses to become Jewish.

Zionism As Judaism By Robert Wolfe There exist innumerable definitions of Zionism. The one I prefer is: Zionism is the national liberation movement of the Jewish people. The question I want to raise here is: what is the relationship of Zionism to Judaism? Some see Zionism as an outgrowth of Judaism, others as its antithesis. In my view, Zionism is Judaism. Judaism is of course a relatively modern concept. Traditionally there was no such thing as Judaism but only the religion of the Jews. There was no need to speak of an "Orthodox" version of this religion because there was only one version, that handed down from one generation to another by the rabbis. Only after the emergence of the "Reform" movement in the early 19th century of the Christian era did it become necessary to define what was "Orthodox" and what was not. And once people began to argue over the real nature of the religion of the Jews, Judaism was born. Today we have Orthodox Judaism, Conservative Judaism, Reform Judaism, Reconstructionist Judaism, Humanist Judaism and who knows what else. The only point on which all these versions of Judaism agree so far as I am aware is that it is a good idea to celebrate the Jewish holidays. Humanist Judaism regards the concept of God as unnecessary, while Reconstructionist Judaism treats it as a metaphor for something or other. Conservative Judaism is generally supportive of the nation of Israel, while most of the other versions tend to the critical side. Orthodox Judaism equates virtue with performance of the mitzvot, while most of the others equate it with conformity to some kind of philosophic or ethical ideal.

Jewish Religion supporting Marriage for Gays and Lesbians When I read anything about those suggesting or demanding that they use their faith to change their sexual and romantic orientation because religion does not validate homosexuality, I always point out that, being Jewish, that is not true for me. In Michigan we are about to have a proposal voted on to ban marriage for gays. We already have DOMA which bans gay marriage and yet we are one of many states to have proposal two which would be a state constitutional ammendment. I am always amazed when people use religion against gays. Being a Jew, I know that Reform Judaism and Reconstructionist Judaism states marriage for gays and lesbians is valid. I want to post this information which comes from Michigan Jewish Community Council. What I love about Wayne Besen's position on the ex-gay movement is that using religion as a basis to "convert" from gay to straight does not apply to Jews as he writes so well about in his book, "Anything But Straight". Here is what was released to oppose any support to ban marriage for Gays and Lesbians. I think it applies to why oppose the ex-gay movement as well.

    Movements of Judaism
Level: Basic The different sects or denominations of Judaism are generally referred to as movements. The differences between Jewish movements are not nearly as great as the differences between Christian denominations. The differences between Orthodoxy and Reform Judaism are not much greater than the differences between the liberal and fundamentalist wings of the Baptist denomination of Christianity. In general, when I speak of "movements" in this site, I am referring to movements in the United States in the 20th century.
    Movements in Ancient Times
Perhaps the oldest records we have of a formal difference of opinion among Jews dates back to the time of the Maccabean revolt, which is the basis for the story of Chanukkah . At that time, the land of Israel was under the relatively benevolent control of Greece, and was deeply influenced by Greek culture. Hellenizing Jews were opposed by a religious traditionalist group known as the Chasideans (no direct relation to the modern movement known as Chasidism). As the Selucid Greeks began to oppress the Jews, war broke out and the Jewish people united in their opposition to the Greeks.

Reconstructionist Judaism (From Judaism as Civilization by Mordecai M. Kaplan, 1934) The Jew’s religion is but one element in his life that is challenged by the present environment. It is a mistake, therefore, to conceive the task of conserving Jewish life as essentially a task of saving the Jew’s religion. When a person is about to abandon a house for fear that it might fall about his ears at any moment, it is folly to try to convince him that he ought to remain in it because of the beautiful frescoes on the walls. Jewish life is becoming uninhabitable because it is in danger of collapse. The problem is how to make it habitable. To drop the metaphor and return to the more abstract method of viewing the problem of Judaism, the task now before the Jew is to save the otherness of Jewish life; the element of unlikeness will take care of itself. . . Judaism as otherness is . . .something far more comprehensive than Jewish religion. It includes that nexus of a history, literature, language, social organization, folk sanctions, standards of conduct, social and spiritual ideals, esthetic values, which is their totality forma civilization. . . Judaism is but one of a number of unique national civilizations guiding humanity toward its spiritual destiny. It has functioned as a civilization throughout its career, and it is only in that capacity that it can function in the future. . .

A comparative analysis of the different forms of American Judaism: Conservative, Orthodox, Reform, and Reconstructionist. 1,465 words ( approx. 5.9 pages ), 3 sources, MLA, Click here to show/hide Paper Summary
    Abstract
This paper examines how Judaism is the oldest monotheistic religion and a religious culture covering diverse ethnicities and all races. It looks at how, socially, Jews can be distinguished among various levels of religiosity from the Segregationists or Hassidic Jews to the Integrationist (Orthodox, Reform, Conservative) Jewish Americans. It evaluates the different ideologies of each group from a gentile point of view and looks at how each group integrate with each other.
    From the Paper:
"The Orthodox Jewish Americans, as the term implies, claim to see the ancient biblical Judaism along a straight line, without deviations to the right or to the left. Contrary to the Hassidism, they do not observe all of the "Mitzvoth" (commandments) of the Torah, nor would they want to be uniformly dressed for identification. A conservative business suit on Shabbat, with a kipah on their heads (males only), is a sufficient distinction of an Orthodox Jew from all the others. Women and men sit apart in a Orthodox synagogue. Kashruth is observed, but not always to the tiniest detail (contrary to the Hassidim). All prayers are in Hebrew, but the rabbi's sermon could be in English or in Hebrew. Most of the Orthodox Jewish people belong to the integrationist portion of the society."
