Rastafari movement
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Rastafarian Haile Selassie I Rasta , or the Rastafari movement of Jah people , is a religious movement that reveres Haile Selassie I , the former emperor of Ethiopia , as King of Kings, Lord of Lords and the Lion of Judah . The name Rastafari comes from Ras Tafari , the pre-coronation name of Haile Selassie I, who Rastas of many mansions say is the earthly aspect of Jah (short for Jehova or the Rastafari name for God ) and part of the Holy Trinity . The movement emerged in Jamaica among working-class and peasant black people in the early , arising from an interpretation of Biblical prophecy , black social and political aspirations, and the teachings of their prophet, Jamaican black publicist and organiser Marcus Garvey , whose political and cultural vision helped inspire a new world view. The movement is sometimes called "Rastafarianism" ; however, this is considered improper and offensive by the Rastas themselves.

Rasta fari anism This religion traces its inception to Marcus Garvey (born in 1887), whose philosophical ideologies were the catalyst that would eventually grow into the Rastafarian movement in 1930. Rastafarianism is often associated with the black impoverished population of Jamaica. It is not just a religion to them but a way of life, a struggle for their rights and freedom. In the early 1920's, Garvey an influential black spokesman was founder of the "back-to-Africa" movement. He spoke of the redemption of the black people through a future black African king . "No race has the last word on culture and on civilization. You do not know what the black man is capable of; you do not know what he is thinking and therefore you do not know what the oppressed and suppressed Negro, by virtue of his condition and circumstance, may give to the world as a surprise."( Speech, June 6, 1928, Royal Albert Hall, London. Quoted in Adolph Edwards, Marcus Garvey Rastas believe that all people of the world are equal, bound together by one god, Jah. They also believe their ancestors offended Jah in some way, which brought them into an exile of slavery in Jamaica. To them blacks are still suppressed through poverty and illiteracy and deceived by the white man's system, which is Babylon.

About this page

Rastafarians worship Haile Selassie I, (know as Ras [Prince] Tafari) former emperor of Ethiopia, considering him to have been the Messiah and the champion of the black race. Although he has physically ''disappeared'', followers still claim to access his presence as Jah. Rastas believe that black people are the Israelites reincarnated and have been persecuted by the white race in divine punishment for their sins. They will eventually be redeemed by exodus to Africa, their true home and heaven on earth. Rastafarian lifestyle emphasises harmony with the world, and may include a vegetarian diet, growing dreadlocks, and the smoking of ganja (marijuana). Rastafarians draw on parts of the Bible as spiritual texts. Source: An A-Z of Religions in the UK , NewsUnlimited
Rastafarians acknowledge that their religion is the blending of the purest forms of both Judaism and Christianity; they also accept the Egyptian origins of both these religions. In affirming the divinity of Haile Selassie, Rastafari rejects the Babylonian hypocrisy of the modern church. The church of Rome, and even the council of Rome, are considered to be particularly Babylonian: was it not from this city that Mussolini invaded the holy land of Ethiopia in 1935? Religions always reflect the social and geographical environment out of which they emerge, and Jamaican Rastafari is no exception: for example, the use of marijuana as a sacrament and aid to meditation is logical in a country where a particularly potent strain of 'herb' grows freely.

What Is Rastafarianism? Who Was Bob Marley?

Christian Courier: Questions
Tuesday, September 14, 2004 What is the religion called Rastafarianism? How was Jamaican entertainer Bob Marley connected with this movement? A popular Bob Marley t-shirt with the Rastafarian colors. Rastafarianism is a religious movement (especially popular in Jamaica - 5% to 10% of the population) that is less than a century old. It had its beginnings in a black, political movement that started in the 1920s/30s. Like many other systems, Rastafarianism has segments within it that advocate various shades of religious ideas. But these sects have one thing in common. Each teaches doctrines that are antagonistic to the Christian system as revealed in the New Testament. Here is a brief listing of some of the false ideas associated with this religious movement.

    Rastafarianism
Rastafarianism is a 20th century phenomenom originating from the shanty towns of Kingston, Jamaica, and spreading among the African (and non-african) diaspora on the wings of the international music industry and the ganja trade routes. The Rastafarian movement began with the teachings of Marcus Garvey who founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association in the 1920's. He advocated a "back to Africa" consciousness, awakening black pride and denouncing the British colonialism that made blacks feel ashamed of their African heritage. "Look to Africa", said Marcus Garvey in in 1929 in his last address to the UNIA, in Jamaica, "where a king would be crowned, for the day of deliverance is near." When on on November 2 of the following year Ras Tafari, was crowned emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia and assumed his name meaning "the power of the Holy Trinity". it seemed like the prophecy was fulfilled. Haile Selassie claimed to be a direct descendant of King David, the 225th ruler in an unbroken line of Ethiopian Kings from King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. He took great pride in being black and wanted to regain the black heritage that was lost by loosing faith and straying from the holy ways. He was also, mind you, considered a ruthless dictator, by some of the neighbouring african countries and was opossed by the Eritreans who were fighting for their freedom. He did however allow his subjects to draw up a constitution, established a parliamentary and judicary syystem, abolished slavery, and revised the constitution. In 1974 following worsening political and economic conditions he was deposed by the unsavory Marxist military dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam, later toppled in turn in 1991

Saying the word 'Rastafarianism' will, for a lot of people, evoke the picture of a dreadlocked Jamaican, lying in a hammock smoking a carrot-sized spliff and staring with red-shot, stoned eyes out over the Caribbean sea for hours on end without so much as moving a finger. While this might be part of the Rastafarian picture, it will not be more than a very small part of it. Rastafarianism is part lifestyle and part religion, but maybe the term 'spiritual consciousness' will cover the meaning of the term Rastafarianism more than anything else. 'Back to Africa' With its roots in 1930s Jamaica as a 'back to Africa' movement, Rastfarianism has changed a lot since then. Poor Jamaicans of African origin saw the slave trade and the exportation of African slaves to the Americas as the black people's Exodus. Similar to the Exodus of the Jews in Egypt and Babylon, they wanted repatriation back to the motherland, Africa, and away from their own Babylon, the Americas. From this starting point Rastafarianism grew into what it is today, a whole encompassing lifestyle.

February 4, 2005 Jamaican reggae icon Bob Marley would have been 60 this Sunday. Legions of fans have descended on Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa for a month-long celebration marking the anniversary of the singer-poet's birth. The festivities are being held in the African country due to its association with the Rastafarian religion, which Marley followed. The celebration kicked off Tuesday with the opening of art and photo exhibitions and a symposium on African history based on themes in Marley's songs, which include such classics as "No Woman No Cry" and "I Shot the Sheriff." Organizers expect that up to 300,000 people will jam the city's Meskal square on Sunday for a gala concert to mark the music legend's birthday on February 6, 1945. Marley, who died at the age of 36 of brain cancer in 1981, is considered by many to be one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Most critics agree that no other musician has single-handedly held such sway over a music genre the way Marley did with reggae.
