    Mission and Values
    AFSC Mission Statement
The American Friends Service Committee is a practical expression of the faith of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). Committed to the principles of nonviolence and justice, it seeks in its work and witness to draw on the transforming power of love, human and divine. We recognize that the leadings of the Spirit and the principles of truth found through Friends' experience and practice are not the exclusive possession of any group. Thus, the AFSC draws into its work people of many faiths and backgrounds who share the values that animate its life and who bring to it a rich variety of experiences and spiritual insights. This AFSC community works to transform conditions and relationships both in the world and in ourselves, which threaten to overwhelm what is precious in human beings. We nurture the faith that conflicts can be resolved nonviolently, that enmity can be transformed into friendship, strife into cooperation, poverty into well-being, and injustice into dignity and participation. We believe that ultimately goodness can prevail over evil, and oppression in all its many forms can give way.
    AFSC Values
We cherish the belief that there is that of God in each person, leading us to respect the worth and dignity of all. We are guided and empowered by the Spirit in following the radical thrust of the early Christian witness. From these beliefs flow the core understandings that form the spiritual framework of our organization and guide its work.

Nonconformist is the name given to Protestants who are not members of the Church of England . This included Wesleyan Methodists Primitive Methodists Quakers Baptists ... Congregationalists , and members of the Salvation Army
The different Nonconformists campaigned together against the Test and Corporation Acts that had been passed by Parliament in the 17th century. These acts excluded Nonconformists from holding civil or military office. Nonconformists were also prevented from being awarded degrees by the universities of Cambridge and Oxford.
The Tories in the House of Commons tended to be in favour of these acts and so the Nonconformists mainly supported the Liberal Party who advocated civil and religious liberty. After the Test and Corporation Acts were repealed in 1828, all the Nonconformists elected to Parliament were Liberals
The religious census of 1851 revealed that total Nonconformist attendance was very close to to that of Anglicans . In most of the chief manufacturing areas and in Wales, Nonconformists clearly outnumbered members of the

    Society of Friends (Quakers)
The official designation of an Anglo-American religious sect originally styling themselves "Children of Truth" and "Children of Light", but "in scorn by the world called Quakers". The founder of the sect, George Fox, son of a well-to-do weaver, was born at Fenny Drayton in Leicestershire, England, July, 1624. His parents, upright people and strict adherents of the established religion Church of England or of the innumerable dissenting sects which flooded the land, he was thrown back upon himself and forced to accept his own imaginings as "revelations" . "I fasted much", he tells us in his Journal, "walked abroad in solitary places many days, and often took my Bible and sat in hollow trees and lonesome places until night came on; and frequently in the night walked mournfully about by myself. For I was a man of sorrows in the first working of the Lord in me." This anguish of spirit continued, with intermissions, for some years; and it is not surprising that the lonely youth read into his Bible all his own idiosyncrasies and limitations. Founding his opinions on isolated texts, he gradually evolved a system at variance with every existing form of

    Seeking the Light Within?
Quakers have been meeting for worship in Reading, Berkshire, UK for three hundred and fifty years. Each week at 10.30 on Sunday members and visitors, children and adults, meet for silent worship at our Meeting House in the centre of Reading. Children are welcomed and separate activities for different age groups are available. If you'd like to experience Quaker worship, or think this might be the place to pursue your spiritual journey, please just come on Sunday, or if you prefer contact us
    • Quakers in Britain worship in silence, unless individuals feel led by the Spirit to minister. We have no common creed, but believe that there is that of God in everyone. We value practical action to make a better world, in areas like alternatives to violence, peace, social justice and responsible management of world resources.
