43. PLYMOUTH BRETHREN - LoveToKnow Article On PLYMOUTH BRETHREN

PLYMOUTH BRETHREN
PLYMOUTH BRETHREN In 1838 Darby went to reside in French Switzerland, and made many disciples. Congregations were formed in Geneva, at Lausanne, where most of the Methodist and other dissenters joined the Brethren, at Vevey and elsewhere in Vaud. His opinions also found their way into France, Germany, German Switzerland, and Italy; but French Switzerland has always remained the stronghold of Plymouthism on the Continent, and for his followers there Darby wrote two of his most important tracts, Le Ministere considere dans sa nature and De la Presence et de faction du S. Esprit dans I'eglise. The revolution in the canton Vaud, brought about by Jesuit intrigue in 1845, brought persecution to the Brethren in the canton and in other parts of French Switzerland, and Darby's life was in great jeopardy. The movement has a distinct interest for students of church history: (1) as illustrating again the desire of certain Christians to pass over the garnered experience of the centuries,~and by going straight to the Bible to make a fresh start without any other authority, precedent or guidance; (2) in its development alongside the Evangelical, T~actarian and Broad Church movements of the 19th ent.rry and its affinities with them all,. A certain haphazardism that has always marked the Brethren is responsible for the present lack of qualified leaders. The early enthusiasm has waned, and no provision was made for proper theological study. AUTH0RITIE5.-Darby, Collected Works (32 vols., edited by Kelly, with supplementary volume, 1867-1883); A. Miller, The Brethren, their Rise, Progress and Testimony (1879); Rogers, Church Systems of the Nineteenth Century; Teulon, History and Doctrines of the Plymouth Brethren (1883); article John Nelson Darby, in Contemp. The GOSPEL TRUTH A SUBSTITUTE FOR HOLINESS OR ANTINOMIANISM REVIVED THE THEOLOGY OF THE SO-CALLED PLYMOUTH BRETHREN EXAMINED AND REFUTED. BY DANIEL STEELE, S.T.D. CHAPTER III THE PLYMOUTH BRETHREN John Nelson Darby 1800-1882 WHAT are the Plymouth Brethren? This is a question which many people are asking. An old lady at Hamilton camp-meeting last year, hearing the writer comment on one of their doctrines, indignantly left the audience, exclaiming, "I have heard enough of the Plymouth Brethren and Beecher, too!" She was thinking of the Plymouth Church in Brooklyn. In England the Brethren are quite numerous and influential. Some, as Tregelles, are very scholarly. Such men as Varley, Lord Radrock, Blackstone, and Muller, are either professed Brethren, or are in strong sympathy with them. They have missionaries in India whose disorganizing influence has given our Methodist missionaries some trouble, and has caused one secession, and the loss of several promising missionary stations. The Wesleyan Methodist societies in Lausanne and Vevay, in Switzerland, at one time suffered great loss through the bewilderment caused by the preaching of Mr. Darby against their doctrine of Christian perfection, and their use of the Holy Scriptures. The leaven of their doctrines has already spread widely in America, and their theological tenets are preached by leading ministers in Boston, New York, St. Louis, and other cities, while their theories of Church organization are rejected.

A conservative, fundamentalist Christian movement. The Plymouth Brethren is a widely used, but unofficial, designation for a loose grouping of churches with early nineteenth-centry roots in the British Isles. Within these churches, the common terminology is simply "Brethren" or "Christian Brethren," but they are to be distinguished from Brethren churches associated with the Pietist movement [...]. The Plymouth Brethren Movement which started in England, and the independent Brethren Assembly Movement in India are identical Reform movements. Once people in these movements identified similarity of thoughts and practices, all of them began identifying themselves as Brethren, and now they are known mostly as Plymouth Brethren, or Open Brethren The Brethren hold on to all the fundamentals of faith to which conservative Christians subscribe. What distinguishes them is a combination of Doctrines are Practices which are as follows:
Foundational Doctrines:
Sola Scriptura: Bible Alone
Sola Fide: Faith Alone
Sola Gratia: Grace Alone
Solus Christus: Christ Alone Emphasis Is Placed Upon: The Priesthood Of All Believers The Autonomy Of Local Churches The Need To Evangelize The Following Are Rejected: Hierarchical Church Government Special Priesthood Class Man-made Rituals In about 150 years of growth overseas and 100 in India, the movement has grown to become like a large tree with numerous branches. While the growth has become stunted in the Western nations, it now registers vigorous growth in Eastern nations and also in the rest of the developing world. /*********************************************** * IFRAME Scroller script- © Dynamic Drive DHTML code library (www.dynamicdrive.com) * This notice MUST stay intact for legal use * Visit Dynamic Drive at http://www.dynamicdrive.com/ for full source code ***********************************************/ //specify path to your external page: var iframesrc="ScrollNews.html" //You may change most attributes of iframe tag below, such as width and height: document.write('')

    The Plymouth Brethren
Handbook of Denominations in the United States Frank S. Mead Abingdon Press, 1995
Plymouth Brethren is a widely used, but generally unofficial, designation for a loose grouping of churches with early nineteenth-century roots in the British Isles. Within these churches, the common terminology is simply Brethren or assemblies or Brethren assemblies. The name "Plymouth" will be heard in frequently in casual conversation, but never appears in advertising, on signs, or in church bulletins. Outsiders combined the two words when the 1,000 member congregation in Plymouth, England, attracted notice with its active evangelism. In Great Britain and the Commonwealth countries, the word "Christian" has gradually replaced "Plymouth" for governmental purposes, but this change is less advanced in the U.S. The matter of names is a sensitive issue among Brethren, reflecting an historical emphasis on the unity of all believers. The movement arose in a highly sectarian age when closed Communion was practiced in most denominations. The early Brethren envisioned a basis for Christian unity - not in the ecumenical merging of denominations, but in forsaking denominational structures and names in order to meet simply as Christians, welcoming all who belong to Christ. The designation Plymouth Brethren in inconsisstent with this concept because it does not encompass all born-again Christians; the term Brethren by itself is not resented. The autonomy of the local congregation is another feature of the movement, coupled with the doctrinal understanding that a church is not a building, but the gathering of people who meet there.
