The Plymouth Brethren Movement
"I am the light of the world;
he that follows me shall not walk in darkness,
but shall have the light of life."
In recent years, several well-known Christian authors (including Tim LaHaye, Hal Lindsey, and David Wilkerson) have referred to the so-called Plymouth Brethren movement in their writings, renewing interest in this non-denominational Christian movement which originated in Ireland and England during the 1820s and 1830s. John Nelson Darby (1800-1882) later wrote, "What gave rise to the existence of so-called Plymouth Brethren is the grand truth, the great fact, of the descent of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, to form the body of Christ into one; then the coming of the Saviour as the continual expectation of the Christian".* I trust this site will be a resource and blessing for persons who love the Lord Jesus (John 14:23), call on Him out of a pure heart (2 Timothy 2:22), and hope for His coming (2 Thessalonians 2:1). Please feel free to browse . . . and to sign, view, or search our guestlog. Lord willing, I hope to continually publish more articles on this site from Showers of Blessing and other sources, so please come back and visit us again from time to time!

The Plymouth Brethren - A Brief History
by Miles J. Stanford BEGINNINGS Early in 1825 in Dublin, Ireland, Dr. Edward Cronin and Edward Wilson began meeting together each Lord's Day morning for the breaking of bread, worship, and study of the Word. Students of the Scriptures, these godly men could not feel at home nor find spiritual food and fellowship in the Anglican Church of Ireland and, since they did not believe in church membership (already being members of the Body of Christ), were not accepted in the relatively few dissenting and independent churches of the day. They felt that they were heeding the Lord's pronouncement in Matthew 18:20, "Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." They were not seeking to start a movement of any kind, they were not in competition with existing churches, nor did they attempt to influence others to do as they were doing. Nevertheless, in 1827 the little flock included H. Hutchinson, Wm. Stokes, Lord Congleton, J.G. Bellett, and J. N. Darbythe latter being an ex-lawyer, and at the time a cleric in the Irish National Church. In 1830, J. N. Darby left the Anglican priesthood and devoted himself full-time to forming and feeding similar small gatherings both in Ireland and England. These were days of unrest not only in the National churches but also throughout the various non-conformist bodies. Higher Criticism [1] was beginning to gain ground among the Anglicans, as was the Tractarian movement [2] with its trend toward Rome. At the same time the Irvingite heresy [3] with its charismatic tongues and prophesying began to surface in London.

Print this article Bookmark this article Toggle highlighting Back to the New Testament: the Plymouth Brethren The Christian movement popularly known as Plymouth Brethren had its origin in Dublin during the aftermath of the Napoleonic wars of the early nineteenth century. It sprang from two main sources. First was the growing conviction among a vigorous handful of Evangelicals that none of the established churches and un-established sects of Christendom truly represented a New Testament community. Second, there was a heightened and widespread anticipation about that Jesus Christ would soon return. Unfulfilled prophecy These Powerscourt meetings became a nursery of the nascent Brethren movement and a focus for its developing ideas. But some four years before they began, a group of Christians met to break bread together in a private room in Dublin's Sackville (now O'Connell) Street: in fact there were probably three such groups forming in the city before 1829, when all three came together at 9 Fitzwilliam Square, the house of Francis Hutchinson (1802-33), son of Sir Samuel Synge-Hutchinson, Archdeacon of Killala. Early in 1827 he confided to a friend that 'it appeared to him from Scripture, that believers, meeting together as disciples of Christ, were free to break bread together as their Lord had admonished them: and that, in so far as the practice of the apostles could be a guide, every Lord's Day should be set aside for thus remembering the Lord's death, and obeying his parting command'. This revolutionary belief, with its emphasis on apostolic practice, lay at the heart of the Brethren movement and was acted on without delay.

THE BRETHREN WRITERS HALL OF FAME
Noted Biblical writers on dispensational lines - mostly of those known to the world as "Plymouth Brethren" and some others, persuaded that the theology they use is scriptural, including God's plan for Israel, and a credible scenario for all prophecy given by Scripture - it is to be taken literally wherever this is possible.
In 1827, or thereabouts, a small group of Christians met in Dublin, then part of the UK, in an attempt to return to New Testament simplicity. They took as their guide, not the creeds and religious traditions of the denominations around them, but rather by the Bible. Led by J.N.Darby, through many growing pains and some setbacks, their spiritual example is alive and growing today. These Christians have been called by many names - Plymouth Brethren being sometimes used. But their true allegiance remains to the Lord Jesus Christ, and they seek happy fellowship with all Christian brethren who love the Lord and seek to follow His word and example. Below are some works of these brethren and others who also hold dispensational doctrine to be the only true way of interpreting Scripture.

(circa 1970) Miles J. Stanford The Little Flock Movement The late Watchman Nee was the Chinese founder and leader of the assembly-type movement named after the Brethren The Little Flock hymnalalthough it had no connection with the Plymouth Brethren movement. The stress was on localityeach group an independent unit representing the Church in its particular area. In the larger cities, each assembly was to be in a different postal zone. Believers were required to attend the gathering in their particular home area or zone, none other. Like the Brethren, a number of the assemblies would congregate centrally from time to time for a weekend teaching conference. China being largely unevangelized, Nee formulated an extensive year-long program for training believers in evangelism and soul-winning. His further emphasis was that of growth based on the identification truths. His classic, The Normal Christian Life , depicts the latter.

Version 1.9.1 This Frequently Asked Questions list (FAQ) concentrates on the so called "Open Brethren" since this is the background of the author. However, an attempt is made to explain some of the positions of "Closed and Exclusive Brethren". This FAQ should not in any way be considered to be an authoritative document representing the view of any local church or any individual (including the author). At almost every point in this FAQ, you will find Brethren churches that will disagree or differ. Variation is even greater between different countries. The author could probably best be described as from the traditional end of the open Brethren in North America. Suggestions and corrections should be emailed to: Shawn Abigail This FAQ now has an official home page!
