Click the link for more information. ). The name derives from Pentecost Pentecost [Gr.,=fiftieth], important Jewish and Christian feast. The Jewish feast of Pentecost, in Hebrew Shavuot , the Feast of Weeks, one of the three pilgrimage festivals, arose as the celebration of the closing of the spring grain harvest, which began formally in Passover 50 days prior; there are numerous references to it in the Bible. From Rabbinic times, the festival commemorates the giving of the law to Moses at Mt. Sinai. Click the link for more information.

AboutUs
Why does WPA exist? WPA exists to glorify God, to make and be Spirit-filled disciples, to encourage and equip one another and to impact our community and our world. WPA`s History Waterloo Pentecostal Assembly was established in 1960 and from then until now has been a church whose focus has been on evangelism, music and children’s ministries. Rev. John Shrier came in 1962 when there were 40 people attending. He led the church into relocating to a larger property which could support the growth he foresaw. In 1965 the congregation, now totaling 120, moved to the present location. In 1974 the present sanctuary was built to once again accommodate the rapidly growing congregation. In 1980 Rev. Samuel Buick became the Senior Pastor. In 1984, under Rev. Paul Cassidy’s leadership the church continued to grow due to his outstanding exposition of the Bible.

Rift Over Abortion in Pentecostal Church in Canada
MISSISSAUGA, Jan 17 (LSN.ca) - The Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada (PAOC) with some 1,100 churches across the country is the largest Evangelical denomination in the country. The PAOC position paper on abortion released more than 15 years ago was among the strongest pro-life statements of any Christian church. On the first page of the document entitled "The Christian Alternative to Abortion," it proclaims that the PAOC believes that "Human life begins at conception." It goes on to state "The only possible justification for the interruption of a pregnancy would be in the extremely rare situation in which an abortion is performed in order to save the life of the mother. Abortion performed for any other reason is the deliberate taking of human life and is equivalent to murder."
Over the years, however, there has been a shift, if not in beliefs surrounding abortion, definitely in emphasis - away from political action on the issue to the service-giving aspect of pro-life work. While the 1985 document encourages lobbying as well as offering help to mothers with crisis pregnancies, PAOC leaders interviewed by LifeSite all confirmed there has been a "shift in emphasis" away from political lobbying to the offering of help to mothers. Bill Griffen, director of public relations for the PAOC, told LifeSite, "We are not convinced that we can legislate morality among non-Christians."

Scheel, Iris

Pentecostal
Kenya
Iris Scheel has been a missionary in Kenya with the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada for the last 50 years. She is a leader in Christian education and curriculum development in Kenya.
Iris Marie Scheel whose nickname is "Scheeli" is a Canadian by birth whose grandparents immigrated to Canada from Germany in the 1890s. Born on May 30th, 1926, she was the eighth of eleven children born to Ernest and Martha Ullary Scheel in the town of Arnprior, western Ontario.
Her parents were godly and active in Arnprior Pentecostal church as she grew up. She was saved and spirit-filled when she was nine years old in a Sunday evening service in 1935. Iris felt called as a young child to be a missionary.
She went to Primary School and High School in Arnprior and later to a Teacher's College in Ottawa, graduating in 1948. While teaching in Toronto, she felt God's call afresh, resigned from teaching and went to a Bible College (CBC) operated by the Assemblies of God in Springfield, Missouri. During her two years there, she applied to serve in Kenya. As a result, the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada (PAOC) Missions Department in Toronto commissioned her and sent her to Kenya as a licensed Ministerial Missionary. In Kenya she learned to speak Kiswahili and Kimaragoli.
In 1954 Iris opened the Goibei Girls High School in Kenya and in 1958 she started the first Youth Camp of All Kenya Churches. In 1960 Scheel handed over the leadership of the Goibei Girls High School but continued working as Christian Education (CED) Director training leaders in Childrens' Ministries in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania from 1960 to 1978. In the 1970s she started Christian Ambasadors In Mission (CAIM) Outreaches, an outreach organization for young people in East Africa.
