Theosophy or Pantheism?
Friedrich Max Müller's Gifford Lectures on Natural Religion Lourens Peter van den Bosch Introduction
The philosophy of religion as taught by Max Müller in his Gifford lectures belongs to the most neglected part of his work. This neglect shows the posthumous decline in the twentieth century, which sharply contrasts with the fame Müller received during his life. One may ask oneself whether this is deserved, because many of his ideas are still highly interesting. Nowadays he is best remembered for his scholarly edition of the Rigveda with the commentary of Sayana (1849-1874) and for his edition of the Sacred Books of the East Moreover, his contributions to the science of religion have been of such vital importance for the acknowledgement of this study as an academic discipline, that he is generally regarded as the founder of the comparative study of religion. This notwithstanding the fact that many of his ideas are outdated, amongst others, on account of their evolutionistic orientation. However, dry as dust as Müller's work on philosophy and religion may seem to the modern reader

What is pantheism?
Pantheism is the view that the natural universe is divine, the proper object of reverence; or the view that the natural universe is pervaded with divinity. Negatively, it is the idea that we do not need to look beyond the universe for the proper object of ultimate respect. Paul Harrison writes, When we say that the cosmos is divine, we mean it with just as much conviction and emotion as believers say that their god is God. But we are not making a metaphysical statement that is beyond proof or disproof. We are making an ethical statement that means no more, and no less, than this: We should relate to the universe in the same way as believers in God relate to God. That is, with humility, awe, reverence, celebration and the search for deeper understanding. ("Divine Cosmos, Sacred Earth," from Harrison's Scientific Pantheism website.) One of the chief clues to understanding modern pantheism is its consistent refusal to engage in anthropomorphism. "Anthropomorphism" here means the practice of attributing familiar human qualities to objects outside us when there is no good evidence that they have such qualities.

pantheism
Literally, 'all-godism'. The view that God and the universe are identical; or that there is no transcendent God outside the universe who created it, but the universe itself is divine. Among philosophers, Baruch de Spinoza (1632-1677) is a prominent exponent of such a view, and it appears also in Stoicism The term itself was coined in 1705 by Irish writer John Toland (1670-1722).

World view: Pantheism
Pantheism holds that God is identical with the real world. God is all and all is God. God does not trancedent reality but is immanent in reality, or rather, all reality is in God. Beyond him is only illusion or nonreality. Pantheism is the polar opposite of Deism . Where Deism stresses God's trancedence, Pantheism stresses his immanence in the world.

  • numerology : This belief is based on the truth that numbers (like words) bear powerful symbolic meanings. Numerology pushes this so far as to claim that the number itself bears the actual power of the One (or Force) that lies behind the symbol. According to numerologists, if you know how to use the numbers, you know how to control that force. Those who dabble in the Jewish Qabbalah or are immersed in the Hal Lindsay method of interpreting Revelation and Daniel are heavily influenced by numerology. So are many gambling addicts and Powerball freaks.
numinous : filled with the sense of the presence of divinity . [Lat. numen (spiritual force of a place/object/being)] In Christianity, God is everywhere, but there are certain places at certain times where the

A Critique of the Wikipedia Article on Pantheism
At the Keep It Real Forums , I was asked to explain why I (Naturyl, Aletheian Institute Founder) felt that the Wikipedia article on Pantheism is of poor quality. The explantion stems from a question by a forum user:
Quote: what are the inaccuracies? They begin in the first paragraph, second sentence:
Quote: More detailed definitions tend to emphasize the idea that natural law, existence and/or the universe (the sum total of all that is was and shall be) is personified in the theological principle of 'God.' There is a problem here. Pantheism does not "personify" anything. In fact, personification is the trademark of anthropomorphic traditions, to which pantheism stands in stark opposition. Instead of personifying and anthropomorphizing, pantheism views Universe/Nature as "fundamentally equivalent" to the "theological principle" of God. It may seem like petty semantics, but the distinction is actually quite important. If we are 'personifying' something, we are constructing a figurative or even a literal entity . However, if we avoid personification and instead state only that Nature is 'equivalent' to the 'principle' of an entity, we sidestep the trap of anthropomorphism. These wordings were carefully devised by experts on pantheism, but the editors of this article seem entirely unaware of this and proceed to run roughshod with terminology. They don't stop there, either.

But I go farther in what may be considered agreement with the school of error. I do not deny, but assert and affirm strongly, that the Lord established a church, that is, an assembly, on earth; which, in one point of view, is His body, formed by the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; and which, in another character, is the habitation of God on earth by the Spirit (not the clergy; they are in no sense the church). This 205 How far this goes in the hands of the followers of the Germans, and how it lowers redemption to what is human, may be seen in what follows: "He, taking upon Himself our nature, not simply as an individual, to stand forth as one in the teeming race of Adam . . . but, grasping the very foundation of our human existence, appropriates it to Himself as the generic force and life of our race; not a man, but the man; the second Adam, like unto the first, as the bearer of the totality of our humanity, comprehending in His Person the

The Arabic scholar Averroes gave Aristotle to western Europe in a pantheistic garb, and thus influenced medieval scientists. So Bruno constructed a personified nature, and the scientific and humanistic era began. The pantheism of Spinoza, combining as it did the religious and the scientific points of view, had a wide influence upon thought and culture. Schelling (in his Identity-philosophy) and Hegel both carried on the pantheistic tradition, which after Hegel broke up into two lines of thought, the one pantheistic the other atheistic. From the religious point of view there are two main problems. The first is to establish any real relation between the individual and God without destroying personality and with it the whole idea of human responsibility and free will: the second is to explain the infinity of God without destroying his personality. In what sense can God be outside the world (see DEIsM): in what sense in it (pantheism)? The great objection to pantheism is that, thiugh ostensibly it magnifies the Creator and gets rid of the difficult dualism of Creator and Creation, it tends practically to deny his existence in any practical intelligible sense. See, further, ThEIsM; DEISM; ATHEIsM; ABSOLUTE.
